Anyone else think Terry's speech on Sunday was a farewell one? "Thanks to all the fans over the last two years" ellandback2009-01-21 10:33:07

why would Terry be going anywhere, i reckon it was more of a thanks for the support thus far. Possibly more to do with Coveny leaving than him.

He doesn't get to speak to us all that often and was just showing his genuine appreciation to all the fans.....and made special mention of the Fever Zone...

He's going nowhere.....trust me!

Financially the FFA should benefit a  little next season when Austalia qualify for South Africa 2010. This will have a minor, but welcomed flow on effect to the clubs! Its not all doom and gloom

Global recession taking its toll?

Wasn't 10,000 crowd a break-even figure for us? Hopefully there are less Sunday afternoon games and perhaps a touch better weather. More games in 09/10 too

The day didn't make a difference.
If crowds are down + more games = bigger loss

More expenses aswell and if we continue to fail to reach 10K the bigger our loss. However in saying that there is a longer time to sell merchandice etc.

Style of football too? Hehe
Maybe the business cycle is kinda like that?

Anyway, I think too much is being read into TS's speech. It happens every year - thanking the fans - which is what makes the club tick. I think back to the Kingz days where Wynton Rufer starts the "stand up if you like the Kingz" chants.

Yeah I thought it was a bit ominous, but then when he started talking it was ok. It's still a learning curve for everyone I feel on and off the pitch. I expect attendance to increase as the Phoenix and Fever get more ingrained into the public psyche, providing they still manage to get results and attract well known or talented players.

I'd still like to see more brand advertising, and as I've said before get a few articles in Women's weekly that sort of thing.

phoenix need to start becoming ass accessable to the media as the warriors. Every week Nathan Fien is on RS, maybe we should have Dura or one of the senior guys on every week witha comment or two etc, that should raise the awreness and profile a bit.

Noocastle has similar population. They won the league last season. Their crowds at the start of this season were 10,000+, now they are 6,000
answer - win the league!

......and don't finish last

It's a great theory... but it needs to be done with the right personality. And with all due respect to Dura and Leo, it's fair to say their enthusiasm for the club, and the game, doesn't quite come across the airwaves lol.

They need someone with an upbeat and positive personality - who can take the piss a bit as well, who can naturally convey that in their voice - thats why it works so well with Fien... If we've got the right player it would work wonders...

Leo was on every Friday morning I think....and was good to listen to as an insight into the squad without being a natural speaker and he never gave too much away......

Yeah, he was on every Friday... and I agree it was a good insight for those of us that follow the sport and/or the club. To those that don't do either I doubt it will have been particularly appealing or attractive...  Don't get me wrong, I'm not bagging Leo (or Dura) at all, he's a footballer, not a media presenter... just making the point that it's a medium that can work bluddy well (as we've seen) if you have the right personalities involved - and likewise, if not, then the value is questionable.

Maybe Terry/Tony need to get the boys some media training which many other sports do...

Yeah I agree Surge......like when I was on the Phoenix Hour and was standing nude in my hotel room on a stag do in Auckland about to jump in the shower when they rang. I told the studio producer this as I was trying to say I didn't really have time to chat and he said we'll be quick and we won't tell McHardy that info......then McHardys intro was "and we have Coxey standing in his hotel room in the nude at 2pm on a Saturday arvo.....or something close to that...."

I'm sure thats more riveting radio than Dura and Leo and much more attractive to the neutrals......

Is that the kind of thing you had in mind......?

The players are easily accessible at practices - especially before they start. Cant say that about other sports, but our guys are quite friendly and approachable.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

That's good and all, but in terms of marketing the Phoenix to the general public its not enough.  Its great for us hardcore types, but the general public read newspapers and magazines and watch TV to find out about sports they don't normally watch.

The FFA get the gate revenue for the finals, the clubs get the home gates during the season. This years average was the lowest out of the 8 teams. Hopefully we can get some better times next year ie: more Friday night games which will get the crowd up to 10 - 12k

if we have to have some sunday games maybe the ffa could look at making them 3pm kickoffs  giving aussie tv a (slightly late) lunchtime kickoff ?
but the less sunday games the better imo

It will be good to see the Phoenix back to 10-12k like in the first season Tony P, and moving the games (or at least a majority of them) away from Sundays should help.  I doubt it's the principal reason for the big drop in attendances, but I'm convinced the Phoenix as an organisation has what it takes to lift us to the status of the number one professional sports club in Wellington, and even in the country.  The first season proved that it is possible and that Wellington will support a good product.

We seem to be a bit obsessed with having fewer Sunday games as the solution to the attendance problem. Surely building the membership base is the priority. Season tickets sales is money in the bank at the start of the season - "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". If we can get the membership numbers up to 5 or 6k then you're only chasing another 4 - 5k ticket sales per game to break even, and it doesn't even matter if all your members don't turn up - they've already paid.

The club should be promoting the hell out of membership and trying to think of new ways to give members value for money. An early-bird purchase deal would be a good start.

I've often wondered about the exposure we get on Radio Sport, the Breakers have the hour with Matt Gunn on Wednesdays I think it is with Kirk Penney and Tony Ronaldson in the Studio and the Warriors have always had the hour with Steve Price one afternoon a week on the radio as well as Fieny in the mornings. These guys are all good personallities and are a laugh to listen to, take talkback aswell.
I wonder if the clubs pay for this? Would be good to have the Nix do something similar on the national station that is Radio Sport rather than the hour on ZB on a Saturday which is a good show though.
Who in our squad would make the best to have on a show like that? Im thinking Browny, maybe Plodder. Leo was alright on a Friday morning but it was all a bit dry.

I think the membership this season is about 3,500.  That means we're getting around 3,000 or just under non-members on average attending home games.  The interesting thing is last season we only had about 2,000 members and over 9,000 non-members turning up.

I agree with you that the club's objective needs to be to grow the the number of members - to build a hard core, solid fan base that would guarantee the club gate revenue at teh start of the season.  However, to build the fan base significantly will require the club (1) putting out a regularly entertaining and exciting product through "star" players with whom Wellingtonians can associate with and will want to see week in and week out, and (2) doing some serious marketing and branding.  In my opinion the market is there.  This was proven in the first season.

It would be interesting to hear from Tony P the club's perspective on the reasons why attendances have declined from the first season by such a huge margin.  Like you I don't think the explanation is substantially due to most of the home games being played on a Sunday (around half the home games last season were also on a Sunday).
