A mention today for the Phoenix in the UK Guardian newspaper's football email, The Fiver:

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has voiced its concern at the Premier League's plans to stage games overseas. "The bottom line is, [the] FFA rejects the notion of another country playing a round of their domestic competition in Australia," flamin' galah'ed chairman Frank Lowy, oblivious to Wellington Phoenix's involvement in the A-League.

yeah I agree, why on earth would he not want a higher level of football being played there? It can only be a good promotion for the A-League.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Exactly - Phoenix are part of the A-League comp - not part of a NZ comp playing games in Oz

Anyway - what about Swansea and Cardiff playing in the English Leagues, and Berwick playing in the Scottish leagues.

Typical Guardian - left wing clueless nancy boys.

(Thats me a leftie as well!)

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Because it would give people a benchmark for the product they watch week in week out.

The Fiver also called the Phoenix a glamour club when the game against the Galaxy was announced. It's pretty tounge-in-cheek, so not to be taken too seriously. Usually they refer to the FFA as the Flamin' Football Association.

You can subscribe to the Fiver here:

I think the FFA are stupid not to want to get 1 of the games played in Oz or even HERE!! think about it more people turning up for the one-off game like beckham mania all over again!

I dont like they way the FFA are dismissing our NZ team, lets make em remember new zealand when we get to the play offs next season!!

And then people realise how useless the A-League is compared to the EPL and the casual fans decide not to show up. Great way to commit financial suicide.

I think they are right in being sceptical. Think of what happened post Beckham game here with Nix crowd size. All the fringe footy supporters had got their dose of footy and spent thier annual footy budget. I think it will deplete crowds at A-League games if anything. Great teams coming in the off-season are one thing - but the market getting flooded during the season is another (note that we dont know how many games we are talking about here)

there's a bit of chatter about this in the EPL Away away games topic in the English football thread

I can't for the life of me see how the whole concept could work.

An additional single match for each team, but what happens if Arsenal draw Everton and United draw Derby ?  Completely different propositions and not a level playing field.

The only resolution is to move a regular season match, but what club will forego the home crowd $$ and upset the home fans by shipping a game away.

Seems one of the more foolish proposals to me.

As Tigers says, talk about it in English Football.  The Fiver mention is relevant here, what I posted isn't.

It would be ok if it was a League Cup game or something but a regular season game is ridiculous and will never be fair. I reckon they should just come for pre season games etc - why isn't that enough?

Or Leichtenstein teams playing in the Swiss leagues as I found out today.

Cant say I am a fan of the 39th game from an EPL team's point of view, but for the Australia's of this world surely this is a good marketing ploy for the game in that country. Football hasnt exactly got it all their own way over there, with league, Aussie Rules and rugby, surely a game of this nature would have the same good effect as the Galaxy game did here.
Remember back to when you started to support an EPL team. (Im excluding those who had links to a team before arriving in NZ, or whose parents did). You were influenced by what you saw or read. If the floating sports fan doesnt have an interest in EPL then a game like this would encourage them. What rub off for Aussie, you say? Well if you cant get EPL in Aussie week in week out, what is next best.    A-LEAGUE. SEASON TICKET. FOOTBALL NUTTER BORN. END OF STORY!!

Two letters in the fiver in response today. If we keep this up we'll have our own nickname soon:

"Right, Fiver. You don't make much sense when discussing Frank Lowy's comments (yesterday's news in brief). Wellington playing in A-League is no different from Cardiff City playing in the English football league. There is no connection to the EPL Global Jamboree, as suggested by you" - Allan Mulle.

"I almost fell off my chair to see the Wellington Phoenix mentioned in the Fiver - not bad for a club less than a year old. As a Spurs fan you have no idea how glad I am to now have a team in my own time-zone that provides my fix of false promise, heartache, pain and disappointment at a reasonable time of day" - Stephen Moore.
