We seriously need to get our license renewed.  I think it's worth taking a punt on a marquee player.

Would take Morientes anyday.

Fixed.
Its a potential market. Potential as apposed to actual.
What is the market saturation? Nothing near 4 million.
Potential has to be reached. 5k a game and sfa media coverage and you might as well have a franchise in Darwin.
There is a good chance Tassie, Canberra, West Sydney, another Melbourne side or even the Sunshine Coast or the Gong could do better.
I have enough money to sponsor the Nix, but why would I?
I don't think the Nix help themselves.
The web site has upcoming events as: 1 June, new memberships on sale  and 16 August, first home game. Thats exciting!. Pretty much tells me the Nix have nothing 'going on'.
Last four stories in 'Latest news' : 23rd June, Queenstown pre-game. 1st July, Rojas. 3rd July, Siggy on pre-game  in Chch. 7 July, New Kit. Still advertising Queentown,
Pre-season latest news: 6th June 2008, Victory claim Pre season Cup.
Nothing to really get someone involved, nothing to really want you to re-visit the site , nothing to hook new fish.

Lots of good stuff in there, auskiwi. The lack of current information on the Nix official site, and general lack of any 'hooks' to get people involved with the club is... 'appalling' comes to mind.

You mention sponsorship. Seriously, what's happening currently to make a potential sponsor get excited about the Nix this season? In this tough environment, where's the promise that any  sponsor will get 'bangs for their bucks'.

As for some good old-fashioned pre-season excitement, well... some clubs are generating it big time playing opposition like Fulham and Celtic (to very big crowds).

Meanwhile, the Nix are playing... diddly-squat? (And he's not worth signing.)

Yes, and I also worry about the license. I agree that a lot of other potential Aussie clubs might start to look good to A-League management if we don't make a serious impact. And soon. Like not only make the playoffs, but seriously challenge for the title.

I think, with all the odds against us (locatiion, non-Aussie based, all away games a plane ride away, etc), we need to be try harder. Win bigger. Stand out!

The A-League won't be keen to drop a winner. Anything less... (???)

I don't really think there is a great need to throw money around to try and fix all the problems we supposedly have (low attendences, no flair, etc).

If we signed Fowler on massive money it would generate a couple of weeks worth of interest and hype.  The first few games would get bigger crowds and everyone would be happy.  A month into the season, when he still hasn't scored and we are sitting in mid table, we would quickly become the laughing stock - TV1 would take the piss,  Paul Henry would take the piss, all the rugby heads would take the piss, and then all the undecideds would follow suit.  Same crowd size but with more people laughing at us and Terry massively out of pocket.

Also, what is more likely to get our license renewed - finishing mid table but with sound finances, or finishing upper-mid table but living hand-to-mouth?

Bottom line - Fowler will be a flop, and many players of his ilk will be as well.  This makes signing a player like him on massive money a waste of time.  If we are going to sign players on massive coin, at least carry on down the Fred path - players in the peak, not players like Fowler who peaked about 10 years ago.

The club needs sensible progress - season 1 finish last, season 2 not finish last, season 3 push for play-offs, season 4 play-offs, season 5 semis, season 6 win it.  Lets not go - season 1 finish last, season 2 not finish last, season 3 spunk all our money on has-beens in an attempt to win it and end up going out of business.

Sorry Frankie, but that's bollocks. You're not here and don't know the situation.

We have to make a statement to demonstrate we're bringing value to the league - otherwise our time may be up, and there won't be seasons 4/5/6 to execute your master plan. Bringing someone like Morientes (or with that kind of pedigree) would bring MAJOR interest from the fans and the media, and not just here, but in Australia and maybe Asia as well. It would be a positive step in marketing both the club and the league as well. Whether he would work out for us and bang in a sh*tload of goals? Who the f**k knows? Will Greenacre work out? Will Rojas? No-one knows, but the important thing to show is ambition to get better and go places, to help the league with its image and marketing.

The financial side of things is of course important, but there a few clubs right now in the sh*ts, and getting assistance from the FFA - they can help us, and will, if they percieve we bring value to the league and are worth keeping. Because if we're not creating any buzz on and off the field, if our crowds continue to dwindle and we fail to bring a big enough market for the league, they will get rid of us, especially considering there's a sh*tload of cities in Australia wanting in on A-league action, and considering that the FFA knows that they could get an extra CL spot from 2011 if we're not in the league, they may not have too many qualms about it.

This is the last year of our licence, and we have to make a statement. If we limp into the season and have an average time of it on and off the park (crowds, marketing, etc), it's gonna be a tough sell to get the licence extended. A very tough sell.

The fact of the matter is that the team management has failed in recruiting a team and getting it ready for the start of the season. Whether it is herbert not being able to handle the two jobs or something else, i don't know. But saying that we simply can't secure players is not good enough. If the management aren't capable of getting together a team when every other team in the league has (some assembled entire teams), then the management of the Phoenix should be sacked, because this really is a shambles.

The Central Coast currently have less players than us.

Newcastle's captain has run off to China to trial.

I guess it comes down to whether you rather we had signed 20 players, or waited until we can sign 20 players who are up to the required level.

Correct - by the time we kick off we will have had over 6 months since the last game!!

Personally I don't think Herbert should have the All Whites job and the Phoenix job - it's been a busy time for the All Whites recently and I think the lack of transfer activity shows Herbert's involvement is detrimental to the Phoenix. IMHO of course.

I'm sorry, but that is a garbage post.

Who is this Phoenix Management team that should be sacked?  Ricki?  Tony?  Terry?

How have they failed to recruit a team?  Did you expect them to sign 11 new players?  Have they not added to a solid squad with players who are potentially better (Deigo vs Christie, Greenacre vs Smeltz, new keeper vs Moss)?

Why is saying that we cannot recruit players not good enough?  Wellington is not an attractive proposition to footballers as a place to live.  We cannot offer the money that other clubs in the A League (and especially) in other leagues can offer.  The club have targeted players who are affordable and improve the team, and by and large been successful in recruiting them.  We still have spaces in our squad and in our salary cap and we are continuing to look for the right players to join us.  Sound f**king management, if you ask me.

I have mentioned this before, but so many people on here are supporters of the big 4 in england, and it affects the way they think a football club should be run.  There is an expectation that if a player we have is not good quite good enough, we can go out and buy the best player in the league in that position, or someone of an equivilant level.  Life isn't like that.  We have had our fingers burnt in the past with big money signings (Elrich) so we are now taking a more considered approach for the good of the team and the long-term future of the club.

I will say it again - sound f**king management if you ask me.

One of the reasons people are so nervous about the squad is because most of us haven't seen them this year.  The pre-season has been a PR disaster for the club and I hope lessons have been learnt.  You generate interest in your team by playing in front of your regular supporters and make the product interesting and inexpensive enough for casuals to be persuaded to come.

Historically most European clubs play their preseason away so that they can gel without the media/fans etc picking them over, which is what the boys are doing right now.

From the distance of London I'm starting to get the impression that Wellington based fans are as fickle as fans from AKL, BOP and Waikato.

I have a feeling that the bubble has burst crowd wise, like it did for the Kingz in season 3 and that crowds for the Phoenix will be along those lines unless the club has one hell of a season.

Problem is the angst never stops...

Ever since that thread where people were calling for Rickis head after 5 matches into V4.

And this season. If its not our lack of signings - even though we have signed 3 solid players and have had numerous here on trial - its that we aren't scoring goals in pre season friendlies which no one cares about.

And if its not that its that the club isn't publisicing enough and if its not that its people again already calling for Ricki's head in either the nix or the All Whites.

I mean FFS people... what good would sacking the all white manager do 4 months out from our biggest matches in 27 years?

And what good is sacking the nix manager - who as Frankie rightly points out is actually doing a sound intellegent job with the resources we have - 5 weeks out from the start of the season going to do?

Fair call there, Gangsta.

Its not surprising all this angst though...we're all stir-crazy waiting for the season to start  and  we've all got different ways and thoughts of venting frustration and expressing anxiety...for the most part, healthy differences of opinion. We will seldom all agree!

What the majority of us do have in common on these threads is
we share a strong interest in seeing Wellington Phoenix succeed, especially this season.

We know this season is crunch time.
What happens this season is largely in the hands of the players and management ...  they will either get it right..and probably be praised by us..or get it wrong...and definitely get criticism from every angle from us. We have to trust that they have it all sorted.

This thread's title is TIME FOR ACTION!
Most calls for action have been for the Nix to sort it out.
Its also time for us Yellow Fever supporters to take action.
What's in our hands and where We can make a difference is..
buy a season ticket and/or  Nix merchandise  or get to every game we possibly can,
take as many people as we can with us,
be vocal and loud   in our encouragement of the Nix and discouragement of the opposition.

The last half of last season showed that it probably is. IMO all NZ sports fans are fickle - people even bag the All Blacks when they lose one game out of 10 and say they wont watch them anymore etc.

Great points, well made.  I make these postings because I give a sh*t, not because I'm fickle or full of angst.  2 season tickets bought and doing as much as possible to spread the word.  Just frustrated that there is nothing for me to bring people to pre-season to give them a taste of the Phoenix.

There is no point in rining up and just going 'how about them Phoenix' you sound like an ill-informed numpty.  Have a point, and maike sure you can back it up.

Even if you are expressing angst about the lack of strikers at least it's talking Phoenix.

I wouldn't ring them about the lack of a keyring with your season ticket though.

OK I must admit that I am pleased with the signing of Paul Ifill today but I can't help but feel that we still lack that one killer signing that covers all the bases I mentioned in my first post of this thread.

With the new signing we have a well balanced squad. Time to add the final piece of the puzzle...

Other than wearing the colours, getting frustrated with SKY and ticketek, I'm wondering what else we as supporters can do to help raise awareness.
