Dear Tony,

Please please please do something about this important issue.

There is an old sixties ska song called Phoenix City by the Skatalites that should be played at home games. Since the very inception of the Phoenix and Yellow Fever there has been a hardcore group of loyal fans who have felt this song is the perfect theme tune for the 'Nix. This movement of like-minded fans has been slowly building ever since, as the poll elsewhere in this thread proves.

Despite continued and increasingly desperate pleas, however, it seems our voices cannot be heard! So many things about the Phoenix are going so well and yet something is missing. Phoenix City would be the icing on the cake and prove once and for all that the club is really listening to the fans. A cake with no icing is still a cake but it is just not as delicious as it could be. This is your chance to make the Phoenix even more delicious than it already is.

It doesn't even have to be the run-on song - just play it before, during or after games. I assure you that people will go nuts. If you are impressed by the displays of Yellow Fever in the stands so far then after a few plays of Phoenix City you will be wetting yourself. You will have also captured the hearts and minds of your hardcore fanbase forever.

Please help us, Obi-Tony Kenobi, you are our only hope.

Love and respect,
Terminator X

Never heard of this song can anyone upload a link to it (youtube etc).  Was it being sung on Sunday?  Chances are pretty high it would be better than Johnny Cash!

There are some versions of it on YouTube - just search "Phoenix City".

Great post Terminator x......I'm all for adding Phoenix City as the icing.....

Please listen Tony P, this will just raise the roof (even higher)......

Strictly speaking is it a "song"?  It's an instrumental isn't it?  Okay I suppose....but surely we can do better than both Johnny Cash and this thing?

Dont know if anyone else saw 'World of Football' last night but Dennis Katsanos did an interview with composer John Psathas, he's a local who did the music for the 2004 Olympic Games.

He's also a big Phoenix fan by the sounds of things.

Dennis made the excellent suggestion that John should compose a song for the Phoenix.

Any thoughts ??

Yeah saw that - and thought it was a great idea.....until we hear the finished piece I guess.....

Why compose something when we have Phoenix City crying out to be played and chanted.....look how well the Dario (da da, da da dah, da da dah...PHOENIX) latino number goes when we're all chanting that one.....

Great that John is a Phoenix fan - he can spread the word on a global scale....

lol that would be wicked, i've studied John in music, he makes some seriously cool stuff, sometimes extremely difficult and a bit quirky, but great music

I was just in at Phoenix Towers.  I could have dropped one off.

I'd go with version 4 off that list of yours Quackie.

That mix is also released as Rockers Express as well as Judge Dread.

Alright!, some traction on this issue at last. And I got upgraded from the Chants thread! Thanks Tony P and Hard News for giving this issue the visibility it deserves.

Tony, versions 1 or 4 off Dr Quacks list are the best but I'm sure Hard News will sort you out with a copy anyway (get on it HN, let's strike while the iron's hot!).

Here's my definitive list of Phoenix City links from my previous post in the Chants thread:

"As per my other post - that clip is actually a pretty ropey version. I prefer this one by Japanese band the Ska Flames because the vocalist is dropping in "Phoenix City!" in all the right places:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctgmpi5CmmE

You can also listen to (or buy) the original Skatalites version from the excellent Soul Jazz records site (it's on the Studio One Rockers album):

http://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/releases/?id=176

Or you can buy a couple of different versions on iTunes (search on "Phoenix City"). I recommend either the 8 minute live freak out version by The (current) Skatalites, the version by Symarip or the version by Judge Dread."

Let's make it happen people!

Terminator,
I have done the same as, see below.

Tony P

I write with what I and many fellow Wellington Phoenix supporters/season ticket holders, regard as a very emotive point, our clubs identity and perception.

There has been a long running thread on the Yellow Fever site, regarding a Run On Song for the team and the overwhelming opinion has been in favor of the record PHOENIX CITY, performed by The Skatelites with versions by Prince Buster, Symarip, Judge Dread and also Roland Alphonso & The Soul Brothers.

Wellington Phoenix are a fledgling club who arrived at the magnificent Westpac Trust Stadium like cuckoos back in August, I feel we all have a mission and that is to mould an identity in the Australasian public mind and  having a recognised signature tune goes a long way to achieving this.

The record does not have to only be played when the team runs out, there are many other times during the game, when we score for an example, when irrelevant annoying records are spewed out over the PA, lets use these times to market our club, via TV & Radio.

Other great internationally recognised football clubs have achieved this branding and use it to the advantage :-

Liverpool with You Will Never Walk Alone Gerry & The Pacemakers

Southampton with when The Saints Go Marching Home - Traditional

Millwall with Let Em Come Max Bygraves

England with Its Coming Home The Lightning Seeds

west ham Pretty Bubbles

Chelsea The Liquidator Harry J Allstars

So why cant we ?

It's a great song to run out to etc, but please lets not have records played when we score, or any other time during play. the fans are well capable of creating the atmosphere.

Agree great song to be used before the game but please not during the game.Things are going along nicely at present and the last thing we need is the chanting to be blasted out by  the  PA system

I've got a Didgeridoo and would be glad to fly up to each home game (provided someone else pays ) to play it, mind you I'm awful on it.

I think we can start a yellowfever band, Feverish on the Triangle, Loyalgunner on the Didgeridoo, and anybody who is equally as gifted as us on the kazoo.

I have a mate who's come along to a couple of games already and he plays a mean trombone in a local band called the Aviators....

He'd pick this up and be able to play it for YF real quick......and he could play from up the back so the brass reverberated out across the ground.....with us in full voice!!!

Really all we need is the bit in this clip.  Not the whole song!
But once we get it going (will take a while) man what a party

Good to see everybody jumping on board but I'd steer clear of the above clip - it's a dodgy version if you ask me. I much prefer this one by Japanese band the Ska Flames which is s better representation of the song (it's the "Phoenix City!" bit you really want to get the crowd into):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctgmpi5CmmE

Feverish, Hard News - perhaps we should also cut some copies for the Backbencher and Fever Lounge to play. Let's turn this into an all out war of attrition with Phoenix City blasting out of every Phoenix venue in the city.

If someone PMs me an address to send them to I am happy to cut a couple of disks with the 5 different versions I own (Skatalites original version and live version, Judge Dread, Symarip and a great version by a yank band called Les Miserables).

I do agree Levaggi, but the club already play "irrelevant annoying records" to drown out YF's choir , which seems to be the norm at Australasian matches, whether they be Rugby, League, Rules or A League - so if they are going to play anything, it might as well be a record we can all relate to!!!

Do you have a recorded version? What release is it on? Or are you suggesting Tony P has The Offbeats permanently stationed in the stands? (not a bad idea!).

Anyway, let's just get a decent version out in circulation and educate the masses...
