I'm with this all the way

To all the people worrying about playing music during the game - don't! It will never happen - never has and never will - WE make the atmosphere.

This is a pre-game track we can make our own - and it serves as a grunty chant when we feel like belting it out!

Nah, I just rely on my Public Enemy royalties.

I've got no problem with the few surviving members of The Skatalites getting a few extra bucks out of this though (if they ever see it. They probably sold the rights back in the 60's for a pittance to some crooked JA record producer).

Tony P

I write with what I and many fellow Wellington Phoenix supporters/season ticket holders, regard as a very emotive point, our clubs identity and perception.

There has been a long running thread on the Yellow Fever site, regarding a Run On Song for the team and the overwhelming opinion has been in favor of the record PHOENIX CITY, performed by The Skatelites with versions by Prince Buster, Symarip, Judge Dread and also Roland Alphonso & The Soul Brothers.

Wellington Phoenix are a fledgling club who arrived at the magnificent Westpac Trust Stadium like cuckoos back in August, I feel we all have a mission and that is to mould an identity in the Australasian public mind and  having a recognised signature tune goes a long way to achieving this.

The record does not have to only be played when the team runs out, there are many other times during the game, when we score for an example, when irrelevant annoying records are spewed out over the PA, lets use these times to market our club, via TV & Radio.

Other great internationally recognised football clubs have achieved this branding and use it to the advantage :-

Liverpool with You Will Never Walk Alone Gerry & The Pacemakers

Southampton with when The Saints Go Marching Home - Traditional

Millwall with Let Em Come Max Bygraves

England with Its Coming Home The Lightning Seeds

west ham Pretty Bubbles

Chelsea The Liquidator Harry J Allstars

So why cant we ?

Max Bygraves?????????????????????????????????? ooo R ya?   ooo R ya?

The Phoenix Foundation would be great to have doing a song at a ground.

I reckon we should all wear our Phoenix gear to the next Phoenix Foundation show.

PF don't normally do terrace chants, but this song, from their new album due out next week could go rather well:

Very 80s video, and there's a huge chorus!

Would love to have everyone singing along ...

I sense a battle of the (phoenix) bands brewing here...

was chatting to a guy today who plays in an Irish band that are on almost every week in town and he is well into the Phoenix and is considering penning a tune.

We could have a "song shoot out" with proceeds going to YF if there are enough takers.

sounds a plan - I'd definitely nominate local band 'The Stomps', song - One More Night, which fits well with a few word changes (and allows for the Brazilian band to drum away in the background) ....

Very nice.

That's the Judge Dread version for those who don't know.

Great idea to encourage local bands to add this to their repertoire.

But let's not lose our focus here. The most important thing is to get Phoenix City played in the stadium, preferably as the run-on song. Even better, the Phoenix adopt Phoenix City as the official tune for all Phoenix related activities!

Spot on Norman,  once the club recognise, that the paying support want a song "Phoenix City" to use as our signature, then we can start commissoning a local band to do a special version - preferable with the crowd doing backing vocals.

By the way i think I've got most versions in my vinyl Ska collection.

Hey Skaman, this is a bit of a tangent but...

Have you got a 7" vinyl version of Phoenix City then? (The Skatalites, not any other version)

I have been thinking for a while that the ultimate Phoenix supporter's t-shirt would be the label from the vinyl version of Phoenix City scanned and then printed onto a yellow or black t-shirt.

I have been looking for an image on the internet but no luck. Plenty of similar ones:

but no Phoenix City yet.

Sorry Bro, where I used to run a sound system in London, all my labels were mullered to stop others importing the same sounds, back in the day.

But I will have a look around.

Great idea for using the Skatalites 'Phoenix City' 7" label. Would be very classy indeed. Hope something turns up.

Great to hear Phoenix City getting a good nudge in the latest podcast. The graphic looks great on the home page also (that graphic would make a great t-shirt by the way).

And don't worry about Sydney - they will be too shame-faced to ever sing it again once we have rightfully claimed it as ours.

Keep up the good work people... the job ain't done yet!

I'm all for it being played to announce our theme song on the A-League......if thats what we as the fans would like played then I'm sure it can't be that difficult for someone inside the club to arrange.

Tony, this is a very well supported request we've love for you to follow through and make happen for us, as a show of loyalty, thanks and recognition of the passionate and fervent support we have given in the short but fantastic life and journey of the MIGHTY Phoenix thus far.

The Australian fans admire, enjoy, compliment and envy our passion and energy and for us to have our own tune - so fitting it is as well - will take our commitment and support to the next level.

Play it for us please.......and we will make it our own.........

We live in "PHOENIX CITY".....and I am most definitely "PHOENIX TIL I DIE!!!!!"

Are you.........

If you're wanting money to do the talking then Serepisos and the team's sponsors will get heard before any one of us! :-)
