As a resident of Hutt City I'd like to thank the ratepayers of Wellington for funding this infrastructure for the Phoenix :)
Turf looks superb. Don't think renovations on building finished yet . There is some kind of extension being added. Maybe a deck.

I suspect that the real reason that WelNix stopped pushing for a boutique stadium was nothing to do with NIMBYs, but was because they needed a 20 year licence to make it commercially viable and the FFA wouldn't give them one, but they didn't want to jeopardize those negotiations so instead didn't bother pushing their case for the stadium or engaging with the misinformed angry mob.

I think so too, they put it out there and just let it fizzle out with no real interaction with the community. They handled the whole situation appallingly, can't blame the NIMBYs this time.
A more cynical person might think that they never actually intended to build a stadium, that they commisioned some pretty pictures and strung along the council and fans just so they had an extra bargaining chip to show how serious they were to the FFA.

Interestingly one of the things the Phoenix touted re the Petone Stadium was open access to training fields (not fenced off) but that is not what has happened at MLP (which now looks like the exercise yard at Rimutaka Prison).

Wellington has a large CBD for a city of 200k, because it really is a CBD for the 500k residents in the region (who are highly service orientated as there is very little manufacturing), there is no doubt that the commercial rates are subsidising the residential rates to a much larger extent than anywhere else in the country. On the other hand, the Wellington rate payers also pay for a lot of the services and events that people from the commuting cities enjoy. It's the second biggest CBD in the country, and gets the most foot traffic so you'd expect commercial rates would be second to Auckland.
If we did join as one city I wonder if rates will go up in Wellington but fall in some of the other cities in the region.

Other than reducing the number of elected officials I don't really see the upside of a super-city. And at a regional level elected officials are relatively inexpensive.
