And if we have 5 visa spots, what other positions due you look to use them (apart from one already used for CB)?

Couple of midfielders, and a centre forward. If it turns out we have 5 to play with, maybe look at another wide attacking player. Not convinced that Burns is the player he was 3-4 years ago.

I think people were overly critical of Burns last season. The service he got was shocking and regularly you could see him getting frustrated with the lack of movement/support from the team. Personally I still think he was our most threatening player, we were just poorly set up and our link up play was shambles.

Gabriel Agbonlahor - Like Ross McCormack, limited game time at Aston Villa but has proven in the past that he can score goals and if he came to Wellington and did anything similar to what Ross did for Melbourne City in his short time, then I feel we would make top 4 this year.

Sulley Muntari - Currently at Deportivo in the La Liga, Sulley has also struggled with game time after leaving AC Milan in 2015. Sulley is a physical presence in the midfield with the ability to physically battle with the opposition and pass the ball is something the Phoenix lacked, even with Paracki. If Sulley were to come to the A-League he would no doubt make a significant impact and give the phoenix defense a well needed boost.

Two off contract players:

Mitchell Austin - Having been ruled out last season with an ACL injury and being released by Melbourne Victory, Mitch is not one of the first names on anyone's minds when it comes to selecting a winger matchday squad. But he has something that defenders struggle with late on into games. Pace. I can see Mitch coming to Wellington and coming off the bench late on in games and with his pace, the Phoenix would be able to use his pure speed to help change the course of late games and is something they have lacked since Kwabena Appiah left the club in 2016

Daniel Adlung - Also filling a current import slot, Adlung had a solid first season in the A-League with Adelaide in a campaign that saw him bag 5 goals and 3 assists. Despite their inability to finish chances, Adelaide's midfield was the best part of their season with Adlung and Isaias helping a youthful team finish 5th in the regular season and runners up in the FFA Cup to Sydney FC. No doubt if Adlung came to Wellington, he would help bolster what is now depleted midfield with the depatures of Ridenton, Ljujic and Paracki.

So let me know who you guys think would suit Wellington and why and feel free to crap all over my suggestions :)

Gabby's - villa through and through. I wouldn't see him ever leaving.

Muntari - Don't know enough about him

Austin - players are never the same when they come back from an ACL injury and the worst part about it is once you've done it, there's a much higher possibility of doing it again/doing the other. A good shout, I just wouldn't be so confident after an ACL injury.

Adlung - Excellent player, but he has already said he's going back to Germany.

Star player for one of the biggest clubs in Egypt, sadly won't happen

We could use a couple of players in defence. LB, RB have always been hard to nail down, and we have struggled with depth (will become worse with Dura getting older)

De Jong started for Hakoah yesterday, so pretty safe to assume he won't be at Nix training on Monday.

That's a shame, he deserved a trial.

Hard to trial a player when he's contracted to another club

Doesn't mean he won't come later to trial.

Happens quite a lot, esp when there's a jump in playing standard

There will be a few Aussie lads splitting time between A-League clubs and their club teams right now and we'll probably see a few over here at some point

Not sure i agree with the writers assessment of Doyle being a quality left back

Doyle is certainly A League level.. but I'd probably pick Carcace ahead of him based on last year.

Sure, but you're relying on the lower level club to agree to it so I don't think it reasonable to assume de Jong would just turn up on Monday because we're the Phoenix.

Agree with the article that there are some positive vibes around - it would be good to get a couple of signings announced (although maybe worl cup will dominate for the next while)

So whose at the training - who is trialling?

Good question. I'd be well impressed if someone was to make their way down to training today to spy.

I'd be even more impressed if they turned up in full kit pretending they were one of the new trialists.

I thought Doyle's best performances came at centre back rather than left back. With Durante aging potentially he could move inside Cacace and play alongside Fox with Galloway at right back.

Doyle's touch and general play have improved over the last two years IMO. He's happy to overlap and cross.

Cacace makes dangerous attacking runs but can be beaten on the outside for pace.

I'd have Doyle at LB (wing back) and Cacace as a left winger, Leopold formation, i.e looking to move infield and link with the striker (TBA) and #10 (Singh).

Is Doyle faster than Carcace?

Permalink Permalink

I doubt it but Doyle doesn't seem to get beaten on the outside like Cacace does. Cacace looks quite fast on attack though. Maybe he's slow to turn, dunno.

I can't believe I am yet to hear a single name of any of the trialists there today... : (

Doyle defends the far post from early crosses and counter attacks down the opposite flank really well. Sigmund also did this really well when he played right back. Both often win/won the ball in the air despite the fact that they have/had to back pedal to do so.

He has lapses, but these would be reduced if he was restricted in what passes he was allowed to make. Some players don't do so well if given the freedom to choose what thy do with the ball.

I don't think he's a player we need to worry about at A-league level. Probably lacks a yard of pace for international football, which could maybe compel him to play as a CD where his control and distribution are excellent

Doyles distribution is far from excellent - like most of our backs this is a real weakness. Can't hit anything longer than 15 with any real accuracy.

IMO his brain farts and a lot of what he does wrong is due to decision making and misreading situations, which is a big part of distribution of course. But seriously, this guy can hit a frikkin good ball

Marcin Budzinski has mutually terminated his contract with Melbourne City. Not sure if he's heading back to Europe but potentially someone Rudan and co should be keeping an eye on maybe?

Already re-signed for his old club Cracovia in Poland.

Gulley, Payne, Howieson and De Jong are currently trialing, sad there is no THW.
