This is not being attempted. It is simply to do with stadium availability!

so you mean that because of the unavailability of the stadium they are looking to play elsewhere?...so does that mean that the prices wont go up this season?   have heard nothing positive coming from the phoenix up to yet for the coming season

It doesn't make sense to me for us to take all our pre-season out of Wellington. Surely at least one game needs to be played here to build up interest in the coming season, let the fans see new players etc but instead we are taking our game to CHCH who will only have one regular season game. Last year our success in the Pre-Season Cup helped push crowds up and build interest but this year we will have none of that in our home town.

We want the Phoenix to have the largest possible crowds during the regular season- 11 of which are in Welly so why we don't have at least one pre-season match here doesn't seem like smart business to me.

If there are pre-season games they will have to be organised by the club, but surely they can put something together. Also, if anything, I think season passes will/should be reduced on last year, given recession etc etc, but holders will hopefully be given entry to the outside home games as well, given the cost of travel for the road-trippers
You know we belong together...

I hope they are against teams like Newcastle or CCM, if these are games v Fury, GCU or Melbourne I will be gutted

Yellow Fever on tour, if the games are on a Saturday it would be great.  Certainly interested in how the club is going to package this up. They will surely have to look after the season ticket holders?

Have to be honest, I'm a tad dissapointed a couple of games are going to be taken away from Wellington - and I'm from Christchurch. One of the things I love about travelling north to Phoenix games is the atmosphere at the games - its unlike anything else you can find in NZ and tbh I can't see it being replicated in Christchurch or anywhere else outside of Wellington for that matter...

If the ROF is unavalible than I think Napier or Palmerston North are the best options. More fever would be able to attend matches there.

Its a great idea to take those games elsewhere, especially as the Ring is unavailable.....

I don't really care where they are, but ChurChur deserves one and I'm going to both wherever they may be....

Fookin' Roadtrip......bring it!!!

I'm with you Coxey.

Taken positively, we can make it a huge event and spread the word.

Something akin to a missionary position, I guess.

I know, I know, its serious!

Just take them where the crowds will be biggest. Increase our revenue and extend our fan base. There's not much difference between Napier or Chch/Akld for us Wellieites. We have hardout supporters in Akld/Chch already - and the Wellie crew can all get a tour sorted.

Not so easy for families tho', not just the cost but the kids have weekend sports commitments too. I appreciate its only twice during the season but a lot will depend on when/where the games are going to be before I can  look at whether it will work for us.

This was in the Manawatu Standard 2 weeks ago... How come we haven't heard boo from the club about it? I would be keen for a game in Palmy.. yeah bring it on. Much closer than Auckland. And as they mention, they did support our bid in the first place.

Where ever the 2 games are played I hope they're played on a Saturday and in a stadium where we are closer to the action than at home.

Yeah would make logical sense to play the games on a Saturday. Definitely would entice more Yellowfever members to go. Recon that Christchurch is a given. But i like the idea of Palmy.

Bigger concern is the lack of a pre season game in the capital. To me that seems rediculus. To have your home ground of the season not seeing a game off football until opening round. Especially coming off the succes of last year. there was so much hype around the phoenix because of the pre season cup. Admitaly they didn't start very strongly but wasn't the crowd to the pre season final like 10,000 or somthig.

There was huge debate on this issue before the start of last season, with vast opposition to the idea of the WELLINGTON Phoenix playing A-League home games outside Wellington.

I was opposed to this idea then and I still am.  Just as the A-League has expanded with the expectation and excitment of having more live games to watch, the Wellington fans, who have been loyal to the Phoenix from the start, will be deprived of a longer home season, with two  games set to be played outside the capital.

The Phoenix are a Wellington-domiciled football club, not a travelling circus!  If this is the way that those running the club want to increase a loyal membership base, perhaps they need to think again.  When professional football was on the brink of death in NZ, it was Terry S who came to the rescue, with the strong backing of the Wellington public, a backing that was never, ever forthcoming in Auckland, the previous license holder and our biggest city by a long shot.

I truly suspect that this has little to do with building the profile of football around the country, which is what the sales pitch will probably be, and more to do with trying to attract and benefit financially from  one-off bumper crowds in a couple of locations outside Wellington.  I bet if the club new that Wellington was going to attract, say, 10,000 to 15,000 at every home game in Wellington, there would be no talk about moving the games away from Wellington.  Instead of trying to benefit from one-off bumper crowds here and there, and pissing off loyal Wellington supporters in the process, the club will benefit more in the longer term from implementing strategies to grow a loyal club membership and following in the capital.

Fully agree.

Unless I am mistaken this team is WELLINGTON Phoenix, not New Zealand Phoenix! Taking thes games elsewhere is pointless - it's not as if fans in Auckland and Christchurch are going to realise what they've been missing and add to the numbers in Wellington every other week.

If all games are in Wellington I will get a season ticket, if they are not, I will seriously consider not getting one, it's that simple.

Alienating the already dwindling crowd here in Wellington is NOT a good strategy IMO.

I also agree that at least one pre season games needs to be arranged for Wellington, or this will just be another slap in the face to those who have followed the Phoenix for the past 2 years.

Don't know anything about S14 really, but don't the Hurricanes take games away from wgtn (ie New Plymouth recently?), seemingly without ill effect?

Central Pulse also do this, mind you they've never won a game so I doubt anyone would be too upset :P

the hurricanes are not wellington nor are the pulse "there central north island" hence they take the games away to provinces in the region.

Yip the canes went to New Plymouth this season and two years ago went to Palmy. I went to the Palmy game and it was totally awesome to be in a different venue.
I think its a great thing that they are travelling and I would love to go up with the boys for a mini road trip.

I agree with caseym above, hopefully the games taken away from Wgtn will be teams that we only play away once so that the central fans will get a look at all the teams. Esp if it was GCU or Fury

Its only pre-season. I say go play the games else where. They don't need to be in Wellington.

Even if it is the WELLINGTON Phoenix. We've got fans from around the country.

A trip to palmy would be really good.  Imagine a fleet of wellingtons yellow busses heading up state highway one. it would be a great event.

Palmy would be cool, lots of buses heading to FMG Stadium I guess.

having a regular season game outside of wellington would suck! pre-season matches are alright to gather support from other districts in newzealand and give other people a chance to see what watching the phoenix is like. but taking a regular season match away from the season pass holders and long time wellington fans sucksserepisos4nix2009-04-18 20:29:57

I have to say, I love to hear everyone's view on the matter..but from what I gather it's pointless to complain about the games being taken out of Wgtn, because the whole thing is done out of necessity.
I would be mildly pissed if they had chosen to do so, but since they are forced to, there's no point in complaining guys.

Do you think when the calendar for the season will be unveiled on monday, will it already show where and when the games will be played?

I would like to see the 2 home games, away from Wellington, in ChCh and Palmerston Nth. ChCh have been good supporters of the Nix when they have trained and played down there and I'm sure the Nix would draw a very good crowd for a League game.

Palmerston because there are plenty of potential travelling fans (to games at the RoF) in New Plymouth, Palmy and the Hawkes Bay -  you could also add a decent number of Wellington Nix supporters driving up to Palmy. The Highlanders S14 game in Palmy drew a very good crowd so, financially, I think it would also be a good option.

I really don't want to see a game in Auckland - it is just plain wrong for the Wellington Nix to play in Auckland.

I kind of like the idea of Hamilton. Excellent stadium close to town, an events management organisation that (unlike Auckland) knows what they're doing, decent population in both the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions to draw from, rail links from Wellington, and close enough for any Auckland fans to come down (I'd bet the only Aucklanders who'd make an effort to see a Nix game at North Harbour are the same Aucklanders who'd make an effort to see a game at Waikato Stadium).

That being said, I do agree with Whitby boy on all counts. To me it's a toss-up between those three with Christchurch being a given. I'd personally say have pre-season in Palmy instead, regular season at Christchurch and Hamilton, hesitantingly though as it is less in the interest of Wellington by removing a closer 12th game.

Palmy for the 2nd. Far more chance of converts going to Wellington home games.

In which case, it is also just plain wrong for the Wellington Phoenix to play in Christchurch, or Hamilton or Palmerston North

The Nix have plenty of fans in Auckland, there's me, my friend, his son.....

Auckland + football = kiss of death.

I personally don't want the Nix anywhere near Auckland but do sympathise for Auckland based Nix fans.

Auckland would be best from my perspective. Christchurch second, Palmy third. Nowhere else thanks as I doubt I'd go.

Please not Hamilton . I went to a Kingz game there and the and the Security guys are the worst. Add to that the fact we got locked in the staduim after the post game function and I had to help an elderly lady in a skirt climb over the fence to get out I'd rather not go back there.

Id prefer to go to Auckland than Christchurch.

Yes but generally how it works is if you support a team in another town, YOU go there, you don't expect the team to come to your town!
