No. It didn't fall by the wayside, we scrapped it because it was incredibly time-consuming to create.

Flying Kiwis, Niche Cache is a superb weekly wrap of Kiwi footballers (male & female) overseas.

Must take many dedicated hours to put it together each week.

Once we worked out that this isn't really an unpopular opinion, it was pretty easy to drop it.

Loved the irony of Patrick turning the air blue before and while moaning about wasting his holiday in Milan listening to the previous pod and editing it for bad language.

Then totally not bothering to edit the language on this pod.

Masterful.

The season, and the Mark Rudan era at the Wellington Phoenix, is over. The pod react to Phoenix going down 3-1 to the Victory in the elimination final, and the announcement of Ufuk Talay as the new head coach.

I reckon you have 5 things to cover

Western United and the player poaching process

What recompense the Phoenix have around this (because we know it’s Rudan)

Tony Pignata: good or crook?

Is Muscat toast?

What local players should realistically be signed for next year

It's grand final week, the pod review two very different semifinals and look ahead to the grand final. Meanwhile, has Mark Rudan been tapping up Nix players to join him at Western United, and where does that leave the Phoenix as preparations for 2019/20 get underway.

It's been announced by the club.  If they manage to also sign Nathan Burns we'll know it is not Mark Rudan.

In what way?

I'll take a stab

Saying he's in it for the long term - wanting a 'project' and the Phoenix gig seemed to have given him the platform he wanted, then realising that Sydney and the family is not exactly next door and that there is in fact a fair bit of distance between them.

Once that was figured out that then became the angle of attack towards an exit as well as having a bit of a swipe at the clubs ambition in the process, presumably this was about the time when the 8 week notice clause in the contract was being pored over by those close to him - lawyers/family/advisors etc, all this despite him being given a chance to cut his teeth at A-League level and in the process increasing his profile several times over. Continuing in the meantime to play the family card, despite him knowing deep down that there was little to no chance of his family relocating to Wellington in the first place.

And then we have Burgess, Kurto, and who knows who else, but possibly a few more Phoenix players who will line up in Bitumen colours for next season under the tutelage of (well, it sounds increasingly likely) Rudan once more - The man who had been in ear of these players all season long.

I think that about covers it. I will take this back if Rudan does not take up the post at Bitumen United, but if he does, then I suspect (and I don't like to say this, but...) a cherrypicking rat who's been after a bigger slice of cheese.

Fwiw, I don't care about the family stuff. I think it's fair that he underestimated how being away from family would feel and I have no problem with that.

Muddling his reasoning between family and the Phoenix having no ambition, while also stealing players and planning the Western United squad is what I have an issue with. You can't say he acted in the best interest of the Phoenix when performances tanked and players got stolen as soon as he signed a contract with Western United despite being contracted as Phoenix head coach at the time.

There is a difference between travelling with young kids and pre schoolers, and pulling teenagers out of their environment and changing countries.  People do it, not denying that, but there is a huge difference.

Okay, i'll be a descenting voice here.

On Rudan the Mega-Judas...

1. Poaching: it is quite possible that none of this is poaching. Players that are coming out of contract are free to be directly approached with less than 6 months remaining on their contract (i.e. they don't have to tell Phoenix)

2. Managers do not have any of these restrictions imposed by football's governing bodies, something I know irritates clubs around the world and may perpetuate more of the manager merry-go-round you see.

3. It seems both Rudan and Phoenix had an 8 week notice period clause which they could action. While we may loath Tony Rallis, his job is to represent his clients. If he knew that Rudan may not be able to stick it out long term due to family, club support and personal issues, it seems sensible to make enquiries on his behalf.

4. Rudan claims not to have signed anything with another club (okay, i'll take him at his word). Under the employment contract agreements I have signed, you must not directly or indirectly conduct activities that may reasonably be considered to affect the employer or the ability of the employee to do their job. It is still quite possible that Rudan hasn't been doing this and it has been just been Rallis working with WU. WU have a director of football. If this operates like other DOF roles, the head coach would actually have only a modest involvement in recruitment. Still, if Phoenix want to take things further this might be an avenue but it seems like we have bigger fish to fry with the license.

5. Maybe there is an 'understanding' and maybe there were conversations on whether Rudan would possibly be interested in 'if the role was offered' but I would not have thought the Phoenix could restrict these enquiries. It would seem reasonable for the Biutmens to ask 'what style might you play' and 'what players that are free for us to approach would you consider being suitable for this style'. There would be ways to do it at arms length and above board. And if nothing has been signed (like a pre-employment MOU) then the Bitumens are taking a hell of a risk it all blowing up.

6. Perhaps the Phoenix needed to have (or didn't have) a 'restraint of trade' type clause in the employment contract that prohibited Rudan from working for another A-League club if the 8 week clause was enacted by Rudan (i.e. still leaving overseas, national team and NPL level jobs open to Rudan). Whether this employment agreement would have held up in Australia would be interesting to know.

My own personal thoughts are that the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle of Rudan being "the biggest two face the league has ever seen, playing us for fools" and "a Messiah who misses his family and only wants to cuddle his kids at night".
In the past, the Nix have also demonstrated that they can operate within a moral grey area - remember WeeMac after CCM folded?
I just don't think it's worth getting all foamed up at the mouth about.

On Bitumens getting the extra cap, I thought this was due to established clubs being able to access items outside the cap such as "loyalty" payments outside the salary cap (I think the limit was $200K) and salary cap banking from previous seasons, which obviously the Bitumens cannot do.

On returning Aussies...
Ursan Gulum was also playing VPL this year and looked a liability for Adelaide when he last played A-League. As mentioned by Feverish, only really looks like Scott McDonald.

And agree with Mike above on Rudan/Japan.

Plenty of people send there teenagers off to boarding school. Its not unusual and some people would say its character building. With all Rudan's BS about people and comfort zones, but doesn't apply to his kids.

And those parents show tell their spoiled teenagers to harden up. Because you are about to enter a life when change happens. You make new friends, you make new boyfriends and girlfriends at that age. Especially when you are moving from a similar culture to another

And taking a Young kid to Japan verses a teenager to nz is no comparison, I know which would be easier
