Phoenix City - Farewell

Interesting comment from Andy that he felt that because Italiano didn't get a yellow card on the penalty, that he felt the referee was unsure whether it was or was not a foul.

I've not seen clear enough footage to determine if it was or was not a correct decision but having watched it a week ago, I think the penalty alone is sufficient punishment and no card is warranted. It wasn't a threatening position down on the goal line and was not of any force/propensity to injure the Melbourne player. I would ask why a yellow card would be given and what for?

Assuming it's a correct decision, then I think he has pretty much got it right with penalty no card.

Fair comment Chris - now stop it, there's no room in the forums for common-sense.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the tackle & application of the rules - it wasn't a goal-scoring opportunity or reckless so should be a foul with no card (if indeed it was a foul).

I guess my comment was more aimed at the propensity of refs in general to deem any foul by a keeper as a professional foul (as they're the last line) therefore getting a yellow, or a red if denying a goal-scoring opportunity. This ref didn't so I - rightly or wrongly - interpreted that as hesitance in not ruling the same way as other refs would.

Personally I don't agree with ruling that way - I think keepers should get the same leeway as outfield players in the tackle (I also think they shouldn't get the extra protection they seem to get when going for the ball too, but that's another story), however that seems not to be the norm.

I hope that answers your question.

That makes perfect sense and I will freely admit that I have to think sometimes on penalty decisions whether there should be a card following or if the penalty is sufficient enough.

Just claim all the mistakes were on purpose to give the masses something to talk about in the off season. "Works" for the tee shirts.

I think the speed is fine. Its just hard to hear when the host talks over everyone and you hear 2 voices.

The latest episode of #PhoenixCity is out now at http://yellowfever.co.nz/podcasts and on iTunes! The pod members are grumpy about the All Whites. But there's more than just the failure to win against Myanmar to talk about, with the Nix back in preseason action this weekend, as well as the NZ PFA getting one up on their Aussie counterparts and signing a new deal with NZF.

Was that actually not intentional?

It sounded like you were talking on the pod, and it was one of the funniest sections of the pod.

Another good pod chaps.

Question about women footballers in regards to mat leave. Surely it wouldn't work,  I mean if your striker wound up pregnant then before birth they would have to stop playing (as surely it's not legal to force them to play), and then they have to keep that job open for 12 months and  the mother is allowed the job back. Who would feasibly be not match fit, would they have to keep employing them?  What if their contract ends half way through mat leave? Would it be illegal to not renew?

It really seems like mat\pat leave just wouldn't work for pro athletes in a contract.

But I could be wrong.
