The A-League is here! The Phoenix kick off their Wollongong season against Sydney FC, will a relatively inexperienced defensive line turn out to be the weak link in the side? The Men's ISPS Handa Premiership is on a Christmas hiatus.

The Phoenix go down fighting against Sydney FC, featuring a goal that the world had to wait 20 minutes to see. They stay in NSW to take on Macarthur and their tinny cowbells. The ISPS Handa Prem gets underway again post-Christmas, with TeeDubs in Hamilton and the Weenix at home

A red card overshadows the Phoenix's draw with Macarthur, do we think the process to appeal it was fair? The Nix have a couple of weeks off now, so we look to the Men's Handy Prem to get our football fix until then, where ACFC has just overtaken the TeeDubs in top spot.

Thanks for the discussion on he red card guys, you covered the bases well. I must admit that when I saw it first time, it looked like Rufer was pretty annoyed with that tackle and might have lifted his leg to impede the tackler as he tried to run off with the ball. I would guess that was unsporting conduct and I imagine that was what the ref had thought when he gave the yellow. However, that didn't make it violent conduct, so I (like 99.9 % of everyone else) was shocked when it turned into a red.

The pod team need to use the patreon money to get a MySky box so at least one can go back and look at incidents such as the Rufer send off.

In the incident, the ref went to blow his whistle but then waved play on as Macarthur broke away with the ball and the ref came back when play stopped to award the yellow.  So initially the initial foul was by Rufer, not against Rufer.  What was not clear was if either card was for Rufers foot coming down on the Bulls player foot in the act of the tackle or the more innocuous eyes closed contact in the afters.  Are referee reports available online?  There were two potentially cardable offences in there and it was interesting that the ref waved off the initial yellow before awarding the red, ie he was only awarding a card against one offence not two.  As we saw with Brandon Wilson with his two yellows=red card for the Weenix last year, it is possible to get two yellows in the same passage of play.

What the team also didn't notice was that Hemed was off the field for a number of minutes in the first half with his cut.  When he returned in the second half he had a different shirt, #42, which raises the question who are number 24-41?

I love how low Dave sets the bar for the ref -

Dave thinks the ref gave a yellow for an attempted lash out by Rufer, and the VAR advised him that there was contact.

Ref - (sees Genreau on the deck, and allows medical treatment) "hmm, I'll check the TV for contact."

You guys missed the best bit of the game - the audio of the Nix physio bollocking the ref for Rufer's red, while doing little about Ridenton being kicked in the face.

Wellington Phoenix GM David Dome joins the pod this week to chat about setting up a new base in Woolongong and the difficulties in doing so, the red card appeals process and the A-League season so far. Elsewhere, Auckland City jump over TeeDubs into top spot in the Men's ISPS Handa Prem.

I mean possibly, but also its possible that being a bit closer to the club and players Pat knows some stuff the rest of us don't.

The Phoenix put in a lacklustre performance against Sydney FC, although the Mexican faithful got what they were after. Will it be déjà vu against CCM and a second win of the season? Auckland City pretty much lock in top spot in the Premiership with a win over Team Wellington.

And Muratovic's one - although if it wasn't shown by Fox, does it really count?

I enjoyed the pod.  I do think the guys have analysed our problems the wrong way round.

It's the defence that's causing us the issues - we're conceding while in dominant positions.  Yes, we've missed chances, but us conceding  means we can't create pressure, have to get desperate in attack, lose shape etc etc.

Payne/De Vere/Laws/McGarry is such a step down from Payne/De Vere/Taylor/Cacace it's not really surprising (and Marinovic looks to be a bit out of form).  But while we keep conceding soft goals our attack will be under pressure.  A single goal isn't enough for us to win games - we need to be scoring 2 or 3 given the rate we are conceding.

Absolutely this. Sort out the back first. We're not going to suddenly start scoring a barrel load of goals, the team doesn't have it in them. But we need a solid defence as a platform. Marinovic looks nowhere near as confident as last season and being abroad aside, I'd say a lack of confidence in the defence will be a huge part of it.

yeah, sort the defense out first, then we stop losing games.

the goals will come, we are creating plenty of chances. Have to stop conceding on the counter. The fact we have conceded a number of goals on the counter tells me we are committing too many of the defensive players to the attack, for mine the likes of De Vere and Laws need to stay further back, along with either Rufer or Devlin.

Also the midfield screen is missing Steinman, with the depth of him, Rufer and Devlin competing for two spots.

I was always surprised at how many fans appeared unmoved by him leaving. He was huge in that team. Guess it was clear he was an unsung hero.

People realised there would be a budget cut and inevitable cut to the squad, out of all the foreigners he was in a position where there was enough debt and quality to compensate for his loss. It was much more pressing to keep Davilla and Taylor. Wish we kept him though, great quality, great age, and great passion for the team and city.

The Phoenix notch up a fifth point for the season against the Wanderers, will the replacement players keep their positions for the midweek Victory game? Team Wellington all but confirm second place on the table, and can Waitakere keep Eastern Suburbs out of the semifinals?

think Louis was better than Paine on the right. I don't think Lewis can go out wide again. We need wide pace. And he looked much better playing centrally and deep. I think he has to compete with Rufer and Devlin to start in the centre.

Paine on the right was a good combo with Hooper, but doesn't suit our current game IMO.

Lewis/Paine and Ball wide is just too many slow players.

The amount that defense might have played together with the weeNix too I think is a factor. And possibly Waine/Sail kick offs too. Friends play better on a team.

Be interesting to see how we line up today!

Interesting to see the opinion on Talay's future after the last two games, squad changes, and new signing announcements.  The options on the new patreon pod are probably out of date already.
