The independent Match Review Panel (MRP) - consisting of Barry Such (Chair), Simon Micallef and Robert Wheatley - convened to consider the following incidents from Week 8:

The incident involving Ufuk Talay (North Queensland Fury) in or around the 13th minute of North Queenslands match against Wellington Phoenix Friday night. As the incident escaped the attention of referee, the MRP has the authority to consider the incident. The MRP found that Ufuk Talay had committed an offence, namely "Assault on a Player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball)" against Chris Greenacre and proposed a sanction of two (2) matches. This is the minimum sanction for such an offence. The player has until 12:00 noon (AEST) tomorrow to accept the proposed sanction or refer the matter to a hearing by the FFA Disciplinary Committee on the question of the length of sanction imposed.

justice for Ufuk....

A lot more confidence in the MRP right now.

he got what he deserves. I'm pretty sure that in Europe you'd get more weeks for an assault on a player. Not complaining with a 2 match ban though.

Not sure if you saw it on tv but Greenie looked well out of it while getting treatment.

To be fair, Greenie often looks well out of it.

because I am a slacker (at work) I went online and got a sample of punishments inflicted  for similar offences. they're all in Italian but I provide a summary.

1) Marco Motta (Udinese) elbowing another Santiago Solari: 3 matches (http://www.repubblica.it/2007/03/sezioni/sport/calcio/motta-prova-tv/motta-prova-tv/motta-prova-tv.html)
2) Mauro Tassotti (Italy) elbowing Luis Enrique (World Cup): 8 matches.

4) Cristian Ronaldo elbowing and breaking Mtiliga's nose (Malaga): 2 matches. (http://www.sportlive.it/calcio/video-espulsione-cristiano-ronaldo-gomitata-a-difensore-malaga.html)

hmm I could. I just did a quiz night as a work fundraiser and apparently all the questions were ..."challenging to say the least", so expect some questions at some point in the future.

My point was that it seems to vary a lot, depending on judiciary, competition, player, team etc...

Unrelated but slightly related. A question from last night's pub quiz asked which country was the first to make seatbelts compulsary in 1970. The first thing that came into my mind was that god-awful Victory strip from a couple of weeks back. My team were surprised by how I came to the answer, which was of course Australia. So there you go people, football expands your general knowledge and pub quiz winning abilities. Another win for the team, another $60 beer tab. True story.

Arsenal player Paul Davis in 1988

The incident, which had not been seen by either the referee or his assistants, was the first to result in a player being disciplined through the use of television evidence; Davis was banned for nine matches, at the time the longest ban ever handed down for an on-field incident, and fined a then of record 3,000.

He did break Southamptons Glen Cockerill's jaw though!!
