Hope it is a good game... just don't hurt our little master  McGlinchy...  how you guys drew your last two games concerns me .. like the luck must turn and I hope not against us ,... the NEWBLING would be better...

Looking forward to a great game with the right result ... of course a Mighty Mariners win..

Our little master McGlinchy actually.  You're just paying to borrow him.

We'll look after him.

Team for the game -

                      Paston
Manny            Sig        Dura          Locky

Leo                  Brown   Caceres             Daniel

                     Ifill     Greenacre

Hopefully Caceres can provide us with the spark we need through the middle. We tend to be quite predictable with most our attacks coming through the wing.

Yes Please.  Otherwise Ifill into Daniels slot and Chen up front with Greeny.

Costa, who has done well on the odd occasion we've seen him, ahead of Chen, who if any good we would have seen by now.

Okay, but when McGlinchey is wandering around midfield along with Nicky Travis I want NO whining from anyone about how Brown isn't doing his job of stopping two men...  Also, when we create less chances because we aren't winning the ball in the middle and we have less men running at them I want no whining...

Caceras isn't in the same realm as a direct swap for Lia against a side with MUCH more midfield creativity than the Fury.

I could imagine Chen, Diego, and Lia on the bench with that formation, sounds like a good combination.

Or Ricki might shock us all, put Ifill out wide, start Chen, and have Daniel on the bench :P

I thought Ifill was out as well - I know his hamstring injury was described as minor but any sort of hammy twinge is at least a couple of weeks.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I think they said two weeks best case, more likely four didn't they ?

Ergh, yeah thats right. Thats a bummer. Will be good to have him back sooner rather than later. He was solid against Melb.
I guess Lia and Brown might retain their place in the mid field.

There has been no comment I have seen about the injuries to Ifill, Muscat or Brown.

I think it'd be Caceres we'd be grumbling about defensively, not Brown.  And I guess the point is we also loose Ifill grunting back to win the ball and bring forward.

How many sides in this league play a bonafide two strikers and how do they get on in midfield?

What's the story with the Ifill injury?

Came off early and spotted on sideline with his leg iced-up so something happened.

I think the point is that Caceres would not be back helping Brown stop the Mariners midfield in the same capacity as Lia so Brown would effectively be marking two men. Same applies winning the ball and getting forward.

Oddly enough, given the typical aussie bookies and the results from last weekend, the Phoenix are favourites to win the match:

Wellington $2.45
Draw $3.30
Mariners $2.70

Maybe we are due for a big one...

Understood, but we are really talking about Brown playing deeper in Lia's DM with Caceres more forward.  So it's Caceres you are looking to work back from CAM to help Brown.  Hence it'll be Caceres we might get pissed with for leaving Brown exposed.  But I am acknowledging your and News' point.  As I was saying, Brown and Lia are given a heap of help from Ifill as well.  Hence my query about any teams in A League playing two bonafide strikers?

Is Caceres known for not winning much ball back? from the look of him he's quite a stocky guy I thought he'd be quite a force in the cente? creative attacking and defensive? or is that just me?

would like to see chen get a go but i guess you cant just give players a go. Yea i do think daniel just needs a break to get match fit and like the idea of caceras starting even though lia is playing well but he does put in some silly challenges. Hopefully 2 - 1 Phoenix.

doesn't being 'match fit' include actually playing games week in and week out?

Waiting for news on the injuries, but for a start perhaps Caceres for Daniel? Caceres looked good and I want to see Daniel hungry again.

You've got a point there - as he got close in his runs down the left towards the YF yesterday he seemed to be very solidly built, the sort of guy who could muscle the ball off opposing midfielders quite easily. But then again I've never seen him play before yesterday and he didn't have that much of a chance to show what he's got. Reports from earlier teams he's played for suggests a little bit of laziness though.

From memory Melbourne used to - Allsop and Thompson (that's probably all?). They didn't suffer from a lack of creativity or solid defending from the midfield when this partnership was working well...

Ricki needs to instill in him that if he doesn't  pull his weight he's cut.

that needs to be the way for the whole team really.

gotta be ruthless sometimes to get the results you want.

I'm sure if anyone has a bad game and get's cut, they'd soon learn to put 110% into it each week.

It's because they play very narrow, don't pose the sort of threat we do down the flanks.

I think we have looked at our best with Lia & Brown playing in the centre of midfield so I don't really see the point in changing that (especially with the problems we've had there in the past. In fact I'd be happy to go with the same lineup as last week (assuming everyone but McKain is fit) but make sure that Caceres gets plenty of minutes in the second half.

Big fortnight for the Phoenix....we play CCM who are 3rd on the table and GC top. So we will find out if we are contenders or pretenders(sorry been watching Rocky3...shiite movie)

CCM defense has been like a rock all season, only conceded 4 goals. Sure hope Ifill is OK coz we need his creativity. They will be tough to break down. They play a very patterned compressed game. Could be another lowscoring draw....

Gold Coast away....eek! would be happy with a draw. Mind you their defense is a bit shaky. They have conceded 8. If we keep it tight at the back then a good result is possible. There stadium is not intimidating....from what Iv,e heard the crowd is dull.

Rumour is Daniel became a dad the night before the Fury match and he was here. Could explain his miss in front of goal, though he hit the target 9 months earlier.

Can someone confirm? Also, that may place him in doubt if confirmed as the other part of the rumour stated that his partner is in Brazil for the birth.

Not gospel, but.....

Caceres is allergic to tackling and tracking back - definately still need to have Brown (who has been playing well going forward) and Lia in the middle.

Caceres looked lively, and wouldn't mind seeing him start instead of Daniel, who looked pretty lethargic in the last game. Technically sharp and looked lively.

Apart from that, start the same side as last week.

On a side note, can someone tell me what party boy troy actually does on a football pitch? I must be missing something

I have developed a soft spot for Our Troy.

He has moved in my estimation up from "talented waste of space" to "is energetic and whips in a great cross on a good day".  For the exact reverse see Mulligan, David.

Hearfield is powerful and quick, has a cannon of a right foot, and can be very dangerous (and not just for bartenders).  It would also seem Ricki has an eye for him as right back cover too, and the fact that he has given that a shot suggests a shift in attitude or, quite possibly, that we've misjudged him.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Can someone please tell me what the Mariners intend to wear for the game?

Surely they can't wear the home strip (Navy & Yellow stripes), nor their alternative shirt (Plain yellow).

So what will they wear? Will they create a third kit? Play in skins?

Anyone know or considered this?

I've considered it and come to the conclusion that both teams will probably be wearing their clash strips.
