I'm interested to see what people think of old Cov's.
Personally last year i thought he was terrific and used his experience well.
Yes he only scored once but he really did hold his own i think and would love to see him get some game time this year, especially with a quick striker to complement his tactical nous.

I think he'll do well off the bench and as injury cover for Smeltz/Porter(hopefully).

I hope we don't have to use him this season. I felt he was a stopgap measure at best and is well past his prime now. Having said that, if we lose a forward to injury/suspension it's good to know there is someone with his experience to throw into the fray, but I can't see him making a big impact.

What is a Tactical Noun ?
Sorry...

The following are all tactical nouns:

Platoon, Squad, Section, Company, Flight, Squadron.

Anything greater would probably be considered a strategic noun.

seing his fitness level towards the end of last season, I reckon he's got one really good one left in him. He's a supplier rather than a scorer now. Yet he certainly can score for sure!

He won a couple of penalties with his runs. There was one game where he was abolutely immense and was running like he was 25 - can't remember what game though. Just remember thinking "this guy can't be 35/36". I don't think he will be used much at all this season, however.

yeh not getting to watch full matches apart from the Beckham galaxy...he looked sharp with some pace up front...and his goal was an amazing piece of agility...

looked great in the highlights...not sure how he played overall, but would love to see more of him...certainly think he has got more to show the nz football faithful...

Maybe he can be the Phoenix version of Dennis Bergkamp.

Gotta keep the old heads around - the more experience you can have running on from the bench the better. Think about the youth in the team - they need someone to learn from and Cov's would be the perfect man to teach the young kids the ropes.

I think he did alright last season and I think he's got one more good season in him, probably coming off the bench a lot.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

He's an exellent worker even at his age, and continually won balls when he played last season, setting up many opportunities for others.

Even if he is a bit past it now, which I don't think he is, he can still make a huge impact for the nix off the field with his experience and knowledge.

90 minutes for Vaughn is a big ask, but coming on with 15-20 minutes to go is where he can make an impact for the team.

Covs, will probably benefit from a fitness programme that incoprporates what was learnt last season when the club seemd to push pre-season training fairly hard (possibly due to tight timeframes).

From memory, Covs benefitted later in the season from a reduced training load, this season that knowledge can be factored into the planning.

I don't really see a 35/36 year old Vaughn Coveny as an impact player, though :/

One more season, maybe two, and then I'd like to see him follow Ole Gunnar Solskaer's (i don't know how on earth to spell it) path. After finally getting a carreer-stopping injury he insantly became Man U's striker coach. With Cov's experience, he could do the same.

he seems to have some fuel left in the tank though with rising fuel costs he not be able to refill and get a full season

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I hear hes excellent at oranges and would be great at the training ground passing on some experience to Costa, who should be on the bench ( if we get another striker).
For Gods sake give the young blood a go. He will be a

Covs still has a bit to offer at the A-league level, but I can't see him in a significant on-field role for the Nix in the coming season.

im going to have to stick with covs, although i would rather see costa get more game time over him this season, he still is a great player and did very well last year. this man can score no matter what age he is, its natural to him.

and inside word from the camp is that he still is one of the quickest guys in the team if not the quickest haha no lies.

I think people just stereotype him because of his age. Thats why people say he's slow, when he is one of the fastest in the team and that's the same reason people cant think he's an impact player, he still has much to offer

We don't exactly have a very pacey team apart from Costa, though. :P Prob the slowest in the league. Dunno about Gao/Hearfield/Durante/McKain though.

Gao has a lot of pace. Also does Hearfield. Bertos is no slouch either so our team will be much quicker than next year

lol we definately don't have the slowest team in the league anymore.

Bertos has got some serious pace, and has burned off a few in the league, gao hsowed his pace at the knights.

If Porter signs he has got genuine pace as well.

I was thinking more Teddy Sheringham.

Older than Covs (Teddy was born Aprill 1996 and at 42 is still turning out for Colchester, but retiring at the end of this season).

I suspect Covs still has enough gas in the tank to be useful this year coming off the bench.

Gao, Hearfield and Durante are certainly no sloths.

Apologies. I "mis-keyed". (Which is similar to a Clinton "mis-speak", but performed at a keyboard while wearing a little blue dress.)

Good to see someone actually reads this stuff. Even the p*ss-takers.
For the record, Teddy was born in 1966.  Duh!

I'd love to see Covs play again. Different side when he and Smeltx played together. I thought his experience counts for heaps and I'd rather he share the game with the likes of Costa (assuming no Porter at this stage). As for pace, anyone who thinks Covs is slow wasn't watching, he still has pace

Covs still has plenty to offer - 20 minutes off the bench and experience to pass on to the younger members of the squad. I would however prefer to see more of Costa this year than Covs. Absolutely no disrespect to Covs but Costa is the future of the Nix.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Covs is no slow poke either, even at 36.

I agree with Whitby, we should be bringing Costa off the bench to add life to the team

I'd love to see what sort of effect a Coveny/Barbarouses duo would have, with that mix of experience and young blood we could have a great partnership. Of course we'd probably have to have smeltz as a third striker aswell as neither of them have his current ability which is requirerd to keep the goals flowing
