Brisbane were very good.

I could have done what Elliott did - sit deeper than than any Brisbane players and then pass the ball square or backwards whenever he got it. Why did we need to kick someone else out of the team for that? With Elliott, Brown and Lia in midfield, the ball went square or backwards 98% of the time. God that was a dull midfield for a home game were we are expected to win.

Daniel and Ward at least try to get the ball forward and deliver it. Daniels passing created several good chances, and he worked hard, won several headers and was even clearing from the last line of defence at one time.

I tried to analyze a little what Brisbane were doing. They played a damn good game of football to say the least. But the two main attributes they seem to have are pace and work rate .They were able to have 6 men in or by the box defending for them and then in an instance have the same amount of players in the attacking midfield zone. They could effectively outnumber us in any area of the pitch they wanted. Kosta and Reinaldo would drop back into midfield to add numbers in an attack but be able to burst forward and cover the striking positions just as effectively, which of course is where the pace and work rate came in handy. All I could think is how the hell do they keep this up over 90 minutes?  WillyB2010-11-03 22:56:34

Pavlovic being dropped out of the entire squad is proof of Ricki's complete ineptitude IMO. Did quite well against top of the league Adelaide the other week, and got dropped.

Barbarouses showed tonight what Ricki's eye for a player is really like...

No point ranting on about wholesale sacking of players....we have a good solid squad. We do have some good players. At the start of the season most commentators said we had one of the strongest squads in the comp.

So whats gone wrong?

Has the whole World Cup thing made Rickie lose his focus? because to me this team is directionless....they have no pattern to their play. The passing and player movement looks laboured. We really struggled at times to pass the ball out of our own half. Many of the players look to have lost their confidence. The teamwork is lacking....players try to take the opposition on by themselves. Brisbane showed beautifully how to play with crisp passing and good movement but Man for man their players are no better than ours.

I'm afraid the buck stops with the gaffer.....you can sling some mud at the players but in reality the Nix look like a team that is rudderless. They need someone to get inside there head and get them playing a style of play that they all understand and all work together. The only person who can do this is Rickie

That performance was a crowd killer - it is the second game in a row our team has been booed by our own supporters and the first time I have ever seen a mass exodus before full time.

Actually it's been so long since we lost at home (which was to Queensland roar I think - I remember saying to Jnr Jnr that this is what it feels like to support a Wgtn team), it's not as bad as i was thinking it would be.

Strangely the noise made after the exodus was much more spirited - maybe we should ask people to do that at half time?

Great post Whitby 100%

I'm not convinced Ward is ideal, but I agreed you have to play him rather than both Brown and Lia in front of Elliott.  I struggle to agree with those bagging Elliott.  I thought he was very good with completed passes, very good at moving into space to take a pass and very composed on the ball.  It seemed to me, as others have said, he made Brown and Lia really look ordinary.  But cracker goal from Brown.

Pretty dissapointing to see Mac come on for two reasons.  1.  It wasn't Pav and 2. from the bench we did have it should have been Ward for Lia. I don't get it Ricki

Ragged defense, and a team that clearly has lost belief.  We used to lift intensity big time when we went behind at home.  But a bit hard to do that four times I suppose.

Whoever said man for man we had as good a squad as Brisbane;  I wondered, maybe, excepting Brown and Lia, plus about 10% down on pace accross the park.  But heck, we should have been at least competitive.  I thought for the first half we were, a bit unlucky to go to the break down a goal.

Settle the formation and playing line up and recover some mojo.  Ricki; Pav>> Mac, and pick any two out of Lia and Brown and Elliott, and Eliott > both the other two.  IMHO

Fingers crossed the team and staff get together, work hard, learn from it and start getting some of that mojo back.

I'm so disappointed. We've NEVER lost to the Brisbane Roar at the Cake Tin before  .

Brisbane has ripped just about every defence to bits so far this season. Difference is that usually Reinaldo and others miss 6-7 clear cut chances whereas tonight they only missed 2 or 3. They are simply a very, very good team. This loss bore absolutely no resemblence to some of the horror shows of a few seasons back. Despite some admittedly average play from us I didn't notice anyone not trying.

Of course I'm not happy but we lost to a much better team. In a sense it's a good thing in the long run for us and the A League. The standard of play has leapt forward this year and we will need to quickly grab onto the coat tails of these teams and learn from them if we want to be a force in the future.

Hard to say if he's even 'played' at all. I know he's been on the pitch a few times, but 'played' is stretching it a bit...

we are gone. sorry to say it but if we cant WIN at home we don't stand a chance. our record has ended (was always going to sometime) but we haven't won for over a month, last win was over NQF on the 24th September, since then we played badly, and would say we were shaky there even, we were lucky not to lose to heart i'd say.... and atm i cant see a win coming from anywhere. i mean can anyone see us beating Perth next week??? no matter hwo bad they playing... its away... then CCM at home... if we continue to play like this we will struggle and are a contender for wooden spoon...

we need changes NOW
NORTH = g2g hasn't played a single minute of good football since he got here.doesn't want to be here, just everything else fell through, wish we didnt sell Mckain... our defence was soo good last year.

our midfield??? do we have one? we might as put on a bunch of pre schoolers, they would probably be more effective....

Ifill - is he going to stop eating and turn up for a game? put n lots of weight and has barely played all season, he has goals, not that he deserves them on how he played....

and i bet alot of people are wishing lochy could come back....   we need him. people complained about him, but look at how we are missing him....

there is 3 players i think deserve to be getting their pay checks atm; greenacre (playing great) muscat, durante (these 2 don't need explanations)

I think Ifill has been rubbish all season, and I'm amazed at how much I wish we had one or both of Jeremy Brockie or Kosta Barbaroseus to call on. Brown has to be dropped, his goal though will keep him in there.
Just to mix things up a bit.

Greanacre have  a rest You have to be kidding He is playing much better tan Ilfil who I think should be resting. Greenacre runs his socks off which I can say tries a lot better than some players that just give up after the ball comes  a few meters from them
As for Simon Elliot to quick to put him.Should have had him on the bench
Not to take the plane to Perth
Ilfil North and Brown

Tonight was just typical NZ football, Rickis NZ tactics just arent any good anymore. Every NZ kid who plays football in NZ is told and encouraged to just pass the ball, and that footballs a passing game and if you can pass the ball you will be a good player.NZ has zero players with flair, and zero coaches who encourage flair. As much of a team sport football is, its always players with individual brilliance who thrive. NZ has none, the AWs have none, the Phoenix have none.We need players who can just run full steam ahead and take players on and beat them, or someone who can back them selves to hit a ball from wherever and gain decent contact and direction 9 times out of 10. Nobody can do this. Until we start producing Cahill type players we're f**ked and footballs going nowhere over here.

Rubbish. Brisbane beat us by passing and moving x infinity. They didn't dribble around us, they passed around us. You don't beat sides by having 6 'flair' players on the park. (Admittedly having a couple does help).

So goodbye my love, I know it's over between us.
You came into my life at a time when I needed you most.  You gave me a sense of pride, belief and passion.  I think of all those great moments we had together - a Smeltz goal here, an Ifill feint there, Dadi's overhead.  All treasured moments.  I think of those balmy, some say barmy, moments at the end of last season when the love and passion between us was there for the whole world to see.
But now you're gone.  I always felt it would end this way.  Someone better would come along and take you away.  I know Tim tried to stop you going and, just for a moment, I thought you might stay for a while longer.  But I know you have to move on now.
No regrets eh?  We've shared something special that others will never have.  Just one thing I ask of you my love - please don't go to Manchester.

Well, that's the monkey off our backs.  Now we can lose at home regularly just like everyone else does!

I would have to say full credit to the Roar last night.  Passing, movement, pace.  They attacked down both flanks, knocked it around, took people on all over the park.  I would say that's as good a performance as we've seen at the RoF from a visiting team in four years.  Maybe Melbourne a couple of years back in the rain were as good?  They wanted it way more, full of confidence, great team spirit etc.

We've got a lot to do to make the play offs this time.

For the first time since we've been going to the home games , ( every one since the Phoenix started) , my little boy wanted to go home early.Cried all the way home. Not so much the loss ( although he HATES  losing) BUT THE WAY THEY FELL APART IN THE SECOND HALF."Dad , they're not even trying".I had to agree with him ( mostly). SOme of them in the second half couldn't be bother getting their tripes out , no ticker. It's OK to be done by a better te
am , but to roll over so meekly..We got ripped apart by a very good Brisbane side who did everything with pace and accuracy. I really like the way they played ; shame it was against us.
I haven't seen it mentioned ( or have missed it) but Durante isn't the player he was last year.Either he's out of form ort McKain made him look like a better player.I'm a Dura fan but he need to sharpen up.Some passion and on  field leadership wouldn't go amiss. The other problems have been well stated by others.

* Ricki to attend tactical school
* Stay with a workable system of play
* Pre season tranfer market needs to be better used(less cast offs and panic signing)
* Time to say goodbye to some of the players

jeebs we were poor.

very very very slow.  eliott needs to play further up the park in a-league and this doesn't necessarily mean that he shouldn't be playing holding midfield - the defence needs to play higher to compress the space.

sigmund was amazingly ponderous, static in his play from the back.

greenacre runs hard, but doesn't hold the ball up, create or finish well.  this is harsh because the service is poor and the next 2 are so far away from him.

brown and the rest of the midfielders bring nothing to the game.  last year's tactic was to hoof it forward and let brown pick up the scraps.  didn't like this tactic but at least it was a tactic.

bertos and ifill are being asked to start too deep, so their runs are ineffective and no linking is possible.

rant not over yet

i wish si elliott would whip his passes a bit more.  he's good an awesome range on him, but he tonks it way up high.  eventually when it does arrive the long pass has lost 50% of it's effectiveness.

not much evidence of a decent technique from the locals either - only durante, north, elliott and ifil seem to have one.  the rest look like they're struggling to play the game, let alone play it well.

some of the lads need to lay off the ritalin too - looked like they'd rather be asleep

I was a bit surprised Ricki chose a 4-3-3 formation against possibly the best side in the league atm and with it being Simon's first game. We got killed in the midfield with the Roars slick passing, a diamond formation would have provided a bit more cover I think. North needs to be the other CB and given some time to form the old partnership with Dura.
