Hmm....Greenie in for Brockie would have been interesting for sure...there was no one playing back to goal at any point.

So much disagreement with this. Greenacre led the league in offsides last year and I do not miss that aspect of our front line. Last night we got 2 in total I think. Had he been playing in place of Stein, he would have been flagged for offside for the goal. That reason alone is why he is not missed. Every offside is a chance wasted.

I don't think it should have happened!

I think more could have been expected from Brockie- he was very good combining with huysegems almost setting up Totori- no panic shooting, making space for a good shot- reminded me of the famous goal by Brazil at the world cup- some time in the 70s or something? When Pele was in the team anyway...

He also seemed good when he went out wide, but then he faded.

I was just wondering what it would have been like having Greenie control and protect the ball and bring all these players into the game.

Not advocating for it- I'm all aboard the new Nixotronic pace, passing and shooting machine!!

Very happy with the game, great to see a new(for us) style of play. The new players were impressive, but totori needs a few games to get rid of the headless chook approach he has.

We could have routed them by four or five, but two nil is still great.

Shame the weather crapped out, I'm sure that lost us 2,000 to 3,000 walk ups, as well as losing some ticket holders who stayed at home by the fire....

I think we should do ok next week with the second team, and looking forward to the next home game on a nice sunny afternoon..

Nice comments from ADP tonight, "they play good every ball, they have ideas ... congratulations to the Phoenix. We see next game" We will indeed, COYN!

I feel almost sorry for him in a funny kind of way. A few times during this game i saw him just throw his arms and drop his head at cheap turn overs his side were giving away, and when he conceded a foul and ended up laughing at Peter Greens decision. Makes me think hes expecting a lot more than his team will ever be able to provide.

But then i think about how much money hes earning... ha

Nice game summary in the Sydney Morning Herald.. completely fails to mention the home team except for describing Wellington as being the place of the death of the beautiful game.. we must have played a really ugly game last night.. I must have been at the wrong stadium!

I'm a bit scared to come on here for fear of reading criticism of Del Piero, but here's my blog post with photos of last night's game, well Del Piero mainly, http://in-the-back-of-the.net/2012/10/07/the-del-piero-show/  WHAT A LEGEND! :-p

What criticism? Where?
I see that Kiwi Hatter didn't get his kit off at 80 mins - still on your real-ephedrine then?

Correct on that J82, I take my recovery & recuperation very seriously, so exposing my copious acres of flesh to the 7 degree evening, was considered imprudent.

p.s Although it was probably also imprudent to go to The Pub at 2.00pm.

Big ups!

Was it really 7 degrees?  It certainly was feckin cold before the start and the kids needed an injection of pie and chips in the first half.

It didn't feel so bad in the second half (having thermals, eyechart t, stripey and scarf also helped).  That said I'd never be game to expose bits of me at 80 mins (tonight I told the kids they could start calling me Daddy Five-bellies).

We need to do better and tonight Wellington played a very good match.

I need to do better, I need to improve physically. All of Wellington played a very good match. They are strong and they play good, heavy balls, they have good ideas. Congratulations to you Phoenix and we see you next game.

So there you have it. Alessandro Del Piero says all of Wellington has heavy balls.

Yes we do.

thanks because we haven't wanked over ADP like the rest of Aussie has,

Other random thoughts...

I loved it when Fenton went running to the Fever after his goal and tried to do the leap-into-the-fans-arms thing only to discover that the wall is a bit high for that.

Denied!

That was his family he was 'jumping' into.

It appears they did have aussie commentators after all, Dewhurst and De Jong only commentated for the NZ audience.

The Fox Sports commentators were very complementary by the way, they thought Totori was good, enthusiasm for Huysegems was tempered with the comment that he should have put one away earlier, Ifill coming on lifted the team, Alex Smith very solid, they agreed Manny Muscat was MoM and could not stop stating that Fenton is a star in the making. Unfortunately it wasn't Robbie Slater so didn't get to hear him eat humble pie.

So I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but it was Terry Antonis who got stretchered off near the end of game and apparently he is still in hospital here with a concussion.

Hopefully a few of the Phoenix boys have been in to see him, drop off a few grapes and a copy of the Woman's Weekly etc.

Lets not forget that Durante scored a goal as well !!!

I havent seen much discussion of this.

Had a good view at the game and saw nothing wrong.

On the TV replay, whether Sigmund touched the keeper at all is unclear. Looked a total goalie balls up to me

Got to a lecture today a little late. Lecturer, up on stage,  stopped and shouts down to me 'I was just talking about you",  Then he asked me to tell the students what happened at the weekend. Captive audience! Cue..  "two nil to the Phoenix, two nil to the Phoenix.."

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I hate swans.  Aggressive f*ckers.  Tried to intimidate my lad when he was about 4 at the Hokowhitu Lagoon.  I was ready to boot it in the head or the nuts.  No bread for that prick - the mallards and sparrows got it instead.

Sydney AFLFC's older nickname, from when they were South Melbourne, is the Bloodstained Angels.

That headline caused mirth  in our house. K supports the Swans,  She thinks this headline is FANTASTIC. Me bemused.

Hilarious as that google translate is, there's actually an english version of the Gazzetta article.

Compared to the translation, the article in English is sadly lacking in calcium.

Wellington v Sydney
With all the attention on Alessandro Del Piero, Phoenix stuck to their system and their guns to get a deserved win over a slightly confused looking Sydney FC.

Shots on goal: Phoenix 10 / Sydney 1
Effective tackles: Phoenix 70% / Sydney 89%
Passes complete: Phoenix 202 / Sydney 393; accuracy: Phoenix 75% / Sydney 83%
Crosses: Phoenix 20 / Sydney 7; corners: Phoenix 8 / Sydney 2

The numbers suggest that Sydney were competitive, making plenty of effective tackles and passes, but just not attacking enough – but that’s pretty obvious to anyone who watched the game. This suggests that the foundations of a system are there but the outcome isn’t.

Phoenix dominated the corners and crosses, as expected, but it would be interesting to get more detail to compare the two teams’ movement in the final third.

Ian Crook said his side need more time to gel but the difference between shots on goals alone says that Sydney weren’t a threat in this game. Can they turn that around against the Jets in week 2?

seriously, sydney completed more passes than us and had more tackles?

FYI, this weeks analysis of A-League action on (Australian TV) SBS's "The World Game" (Craig Foster, Les Murray & David Zdrilla) contained no mention of Louis Fenton. There was, however, a 10-minute interview with ADP and much talk about how disappointing Sydney were... followed by a belated acknowledgment that the Phoenix had actually played quite well.
