Smith first touch is AWFUL - the ball ended up about 20 metres away from him!  He is SHITE.

Any chance the can get close enough to Sydney quickly and bombard the stadium to cause the game to be abandoned?

Is it time to watch the final of Fringe? It can't be any more bizarre than this.

That is so frustrating at any level. You get the ball back then punt it upfield making the chance of retention about 50/50...  ??????
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Not just Smith though at times it looks like our guys have no idea at all about passing or receiving the football.People can bang on all they want about Herbert but when a group of players show what appears at times a complete lack of how to receive and pass the football even the best coach in the world wouldnt get anything out of them.

5-0 down and no subs a half time to me says a lot about the mentality of our coaching staff.

They don't look motivated at all though - that is Ricki's job.  Has he lost the dressing room?

Again there at the corner, Brockie just stood and watched as his marker attacked the ball and headed it away.  Absolutely no effort to go for it.  Shocking and shameful lack of effort at this level.

Perhaps Ballane, some players are so used to being picked every game that they may have become complacant? Ricki's loyalty to some knows no bounds.

I like the guy and I like most of the players, but some really do need to hold their hand up and take ownership of a crap performance. EVERYONE plays / played crap from time to time. But this season it has been too often. Our first game of the season was brilliant. Why can't we have more like that?

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

+1
i think the league has got better by a good chunk this year and our journeymen no longer cut it
good news is we can get rid of Smith, Lochy, Totori, Downey, Lia and see what we can get to replace them, plus Sig to the bench
bad news is the replacements need to be Culina level and one or two better than that

This is Ricki's biggest failing though in my opinion. Have any of the guys he's had for multiple seasons shown any signs of improvement in their passing, movement, positional awareness etc? No. Vince Lia is at the same level as he was 5 years ago. Same with Lochhead, Sigmund, Bertos etc... it's not acceptable. These guys are just coasting and Ricki seems to be letting them.

Our midfield may as well not exist for all the lot of good it does.  Can't slow down counter on defence, can't screen, can't move to receive the ball from the back, can't pass...

Sydney just have so much time in the middle of the park it is ridiculous.

We are in transition though and not likely to spend any money on those players we need.Isnt it all about developing talent so dont expect anything to happen in a hurry. Then just as that talent starts to show its ready to reward us they will be off to play in better leagues leaving us back at where we are today.Just went and had a leak as its about as close as im liable to ever get to the toilet seat.

2] It finally shows that some players do indeed need to be replaced. Loyalty is one thing but when they are not performing Ricki, you have to make the hard decisions.

3] The total football thing is great if you have players capable but the Phoenix don't!

4] Whats up with Stein? 3 goals in 3 games then nothing.

5] God has slipped down the order to St Peter.

6] here is an open letter I tried to send to Gareth via that site he uses, just waiting for my login password......

Gareth,

Ricki once said that we would never play the long ball game which to my mind was very encouraging. However, in fact, I have witnessed the long ball game more often than not. I believe the Phoenix have become too predictable.

Run down the wings to the corners and cross the ball to 5'8" strikers so that the 6'4" defender can continually clear the crosses. Perhaps a short passing game and playing it along the ground may make a difference, A kind of "Plan B". Even playing along the ground and up the middle on occasion.

I have always felt Durante is under used in that area. I've seen him a few times break from the back and go straight up the middle with the opposition baffled as to what to do. It's looked good and I'd like to encourage him to try it more often.

Another thing is our goalkeepers continually rely on the big punt up field to the 6'4" opposition defenders to take off our 5'8" strikers. We do this almost every time. Last Friday night I watched two goalkeepers whom continually rolled the ball out or passed it, to their defenders. Surprisingly, the teams kept possession and used it for good attacks. When will our goalkeepers learn??

This all being said, Ricki is the coach and has more qualifications than I. All I would him to do is address my concerns mentioned above and have a "Plan B". In his defence, "Attractive" football in those blustery conditions was always a risk, as the the hoof ball. Still chins up and best of luck to everyone at the Phoenix, We shall rise yet again!.................

I wrote that up two days ago. I may be out of line but then I hope I may offer an alternative opinion without getting slammed too much.

Disgraceful.

Any other team who got hammered like this by their closest rival at the bottom of the league would not have a manager the next day.
