vukovic maybe banned 4 life

Central Coast goalkeeper Danny Vukovic could face a ban of between one year and life after striking the referee in the A-League grand final.

The Olyroos shot-stopper was sent off for violent conduct in the dying seconds of the Mariners 1-0 loss to bitter rivals Newcastle Jets at the Sydney Football Stadium after lashing out at referee Mark Shield for not awarding a late penalty.

The incident is set to come under review by Football Federation Australia's match review committee on Monday, with Vukovic certain to face a disciplinary hearing this week in what will be a dramatic aftermath to a controversial clash.

He faces a lengthy ban - and could yet be rubbed out for all of next season.

Under the FFA's national disciplinary regulations, such a charge of violent conduct, striking an official, carries a recommended sanction of a one-year ban to life suspension.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna admitted emotion got the better of his 22-year-old 'keeper.

"I think it's just passion and hunger and when you see something and it doesn't get dealt with, I think its just that," said McKinna.

"We want passionate players and hungry players and it's just disappointing. Sometimes emotions get the better of you and tonight it did with Danny."

Let's be honest, unless the ref had both eye balls pulled out, he had to have seen the blatant hand ball that led to these stupid events happening. I thought the ref & linesmen were plainly at fault for creating this situation.

However, striking an official no matter how piss-poor he/she is (In this case very piss-poor) is a no no in anyone's books.

To me a year long ban towards the player  (I didn't see him strike the referee) should also be matched by a year long ban towards the referee and the lines men. Thereby what ever punishment the FFA dish out to the player should be matched by the officials whom IMHO were "generous" towards the jets shall we say.

I saw the handball but I don't think anyone actually saw Vukovic clobber the ref, even watching intently to see whether the blatant penalty would be given there didn't seem to be any footage of the keeper hitting the ref.

Not to say it didn't happen, still it seems kind of a double-standard after the 'previous incident' of official bashing earlier this year which resulted in a yellow card and that was it.

didn't see the final heard about Vukovich though - striking a ref - even if he did have a shocker - must be banned for a long time.

Exactly. The FFA have set a precedent with the Joel Griffiths case beforehand. It is not acceptable in any situation in a football match to strike a match official but Vukovic will not get punished heavily.

Thing is. If the FFA let this one slide too then it sets a real ugly precedent about the league. I mean it's like saying, 'Come to the A-League where you can punch an official and call him a f**king cheat and get away with it'.

It may be double standards but they need to stop this leniency now.

Three for me, and two for them.

Sadly, although it shouldn't be, from the FFA's point of view it's two completely different situations. The difference this time is that Vukovic was sent off for violent conduct. When Griffiths did his thing, he was booked for dissent so, as far as FFA rules were concerned, the matter had been dealt with by the referee on the park when it happened, so there wasn't anything else they could do about it even if they'd wanted to . I'd expect Vukovic to have the book thrown at him for this one, especially after the Griffiths fiasco, as there's nothing stopping them making an example of the player this time.

Agree with that the unfortunate thing is it came about because of yet another crap ruling by the match officials. The FFA needs to put some work into some of theses guys as there have been sone real shockers this season.

He should be punished hard for that.

Stamp out this sort of sh*t and the league will have more credibility.

Wasn't it the nut puncher who also handled the ball??

Yes, FFA should stamp this out quickly but also stamp out biased and incompetant referees and linesmen/women which we have all seen in too many games this season.

Hang on, that'd leave Miss Hoe to do every game in the A League.......

Then again, I could be wrong but I've heard of refs dishing out cards in the dressing room after a game.

Two things that concern me here:

Petrovski appears to push Referee Mark Shields hand away about a second before Danny Vucovic gets shown a red for doing something similar. If Vucovic misses the Olympics for that I will be furious!!! I think Mark Shields has overreacted after he saw Danny innocently running back to his goal in disgust.

Also, the 4th Official yesterday was Matthew Breeze, the same referee who only gave Griffiths a Yellow earlier in the season for his Nut-Cracker!

At least we can say one thing about the A-League referees....they are consistent!!!

Do you honestly think the ref was biased?  The fact of the matter is (and it doesn't make it right) the standard of reffing mirrors the standard of football.  Both crap.  We're quick to jump to the defense of the standard of play in the league because it's so young and we're sure it will improve, same for the refs, how much experience do they have of taking charge of such an important game.

So he missed a blatant penalty, that's sport, it happens.  Substitute the Phoenix for Newcastle in this story and see how you feel about it.

One thing football (world wide) can learn from rugby is player respect for the officials.  What's seen at the top level is being replicated on Sunday league pitches around the world resulting in refs (normally volunteers) be abused verbally and physically.

I say ban him for a long time.

Yes I do, not because of that one decision but because of several throughout the game. I appreciate it may have been a differcult game because of the two sides involved but consistency would have helped. everyone's favourite striker did enough to earn two yellows and then for him to be the ball handler just makes it worse.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sick of players gobbing off at referees and perhaps a few red cards might curb that. Mind you if that happened Aloisi would only get as far as the pre-match warm up EVERY game.

Not so much a cheat because he made mistakes for both sides. However the hand ball was so obvious a blind man could have seen it. I stand corrected was it the nut cracker who handled? I may have that wrong.

Did anyone notice on the youtube clip that he wasn't the only player to strike that same hand that was held up by the referee? It was first high fived by another player, did noone notice? They are both therefore "strikes" which is a pretty dramatic term to categorically describe any contact. He tapped it and ran away like a little child.

I think this and the Griffiths incident are 2 different situations.

Griffiths hit on the linesman was deserving of a higher punishment, but because it was dealt with by the ref on the field by giving a yellow, that's that. Can't be dealt with further, get over it.

This was against the referee, a deliberate assault, he deserves to get canned, no matter how hard he hit the ref. I hope those dealing with it make it a decent punishment to teach him and all players in the league that it isnt on to attack the officials
