Huge leap from what he says and a sure step to getting it wrong.A good enough kiwi player makes it on his own accord, gift them places via quota and all you do is weaken the squad and ensure the players don';t have to strive to make the level.

That's B.S. Quotas work out well if they're handled right. Time and persistance. Nuturing and development are key words here.

Time, a sh*t load of money and persistence may help you (ignoring the fact that half the youngsters in this country will still go to college or try Europe) develop players but they should still have to be good enough to play in the competition not just getting a job because they are New Zealanders.

We'Ve had this debate before and I've pointed out that no one wins from a Phoenix that isn't competitive and that point stands. I want a side with a dozen kiwis in it but only if they are good enough to be.Hard News2011-09-24 20:33:55

Terry today was saying the club was ready to sign 3 players this week. Wonder how much truth there is in that statement.

This.

The more kiwis the better, but if there is an aussie who can do the same role but better, then its silly not to sign them.

It would be nice to have our youth spots as kiwis- well atleast 2 out of three

Article in the paper saying that 3 offers are on the table.

Yeah the interview today on radio he said they had three lined up to sign this week, so I understood that as 3 different players rather than the 3 potential strikers?

Am I the only one who hates when Ricki does this? He's done it many times in the past where he's said that "we have offers on the table" and nothing comes from it.

Think it is 3 different strikers.

Remember it looks like Griffith will get signed.  And Chettleburg is still around.  along with a striker, i'd imagine that is the 3.

I think Cory needs to be signed, as he has worked hard, and wouldnt need time to gel into the side. Also looks capable of stepping into A-League footy when needed. Plus hes a kiwi chap

I find it odd that Griffiths is seen as nearly signed when Ricki has not seen much of him. I would have gone with Bran, but RH must not like what he sees with Bran?

Susak could be an option, but we would still need another youth option on top of him

re griffith, I'd say it is previous a-league experience.

Re susak - Apparently his contract is up soon.

Yeah I think Ricki likes to take guys with A-League experience - like Tsatalios. Griff hasnt had a stunning record in the league, and from what I've seen, Bran looked pretty decent and able to play at this level, plus would have a few more years inside the youth category I think- more potential.

In saying that, I have seen limited footy from both of them.

Morrison said he would like to see more Kiwi players but he would be guided on that by Herbert. One of his priorities would be to work with New Zealand Football on a feeder team for the Phoenix, to provide a "broader base" of local talent
With a bit of luck we could have some more Kiwi input to the team via a reserve/youth team again and a Kiwi quota of players for the first team, if the above quote transpires.

Have a quota is BS. its a sure way to end like the knights.

And if they leave it at signing just 3 more and have only 20 in the squad we could be in trouble. We could need 22 or 23 to be properly competitive.

Another crap performance, 2-0 loss to the Mariners. We really need to sign some decent players or its going to be a long season.

hope we get some clues soon.

As someone said, wouldnt it be great if we get an announcement that Tony Warner will be GK coach, we bring in an U21 kiwi/aussie kid, then sign up a striker and another import.

My biggest concern now tbh in actually our defense, as Ricki seems settled with it, yet they are constantly under performing by all accounts. Griffiths wont help, but neither would Bran really, unless given a real shot.

but we cant afford to use our import spot on a CB when we need it on a striker, and im not sure where we will find any kiwi or Aussie CBs better than siggy or Dura?

My other concern is Ricki's lack of desire to start our new signings. In my opinion the pre-season games should be when these guys get the most chance to prove themselves, rather than 20/15 /10 min cameos off the bench

My biggest concern is the midfield. Siggy and Dura are a proven combination, we do need reliable cover for CB, but I don't think it should be an import spot. Someone like Fitzgerald or Boxhall would be ideal, I rate both of them and believe they would be realistically obtained.

I'm open to the concept of starting Sanchez for Lia and having Brown plug the gap between him and Muscat. I looked at Griffiths yesterday and he is faster, taller, and better on the ball but with limited chance to show, I am not sure he is an upgrade over Sigmund.

I would have liked to have seen NTG start for Lochhead just to see how he looks in the top squad.

I think we should be chasing a spine right down the middle - an out and out box to box midfielder (and it shows how good Ross Aloisi was for us), a striker and a centre back

The Fitzgerald that played for the All Whites? That was rubbish in his last performance (at LB no less)?

You're talking about Mexico? That wasn't his last game, Brockie played left back against Australia. He did lose his footing a lot, as did a lot of other players, but his distribution was good, much better than most of the rest of the team. It wasn't rubbish. He is normally a center back as well. Against China he played very well.

Yeah im not sure about our midfield. Ideally we could drop both Brown and Lia and put in Sanchez and another creative midfielder in there as well. But I doubt it. Lia has been good. Brown has been okay, and Ricki wont drop them. Our whole side is worrying, but that is more to Ricki preferring these old guards, when he should be starting Sanchez, and if sanchez isnt good enough, then he shouldnt have been signed- if we needed to sign a midfielder as backup, thats where Chettleburgh could have fit

Whilst I would love to see Tommy Smith in a Nix shirt, why would he want to leave Ipswich? Not going to happen. Susak sounds like a good option.
