I hope they didn't do what the Auckland lot did and asked a marketing company.... what would be a good name for our football team? The NZ Knights. OK then cool, I'll pay you your fee.

FC Wellington the favourite
FRED WOODCOCK - The Dominion Post | Monday, 26 March 2007

It appears fans have had enough of "gimmicky" franchise names and prefer a more traditional approach to naming Wellington's A-League football team.

On Saturday, The Dominion Post published the top six choices of owner Terry Serepisos and asked for feedback. More than 50 per cent of responses plumped for "FC Wellington".

The other five names put forward from a selection of more than 250 were Wellington Phoenix, Wellington Wasps, Wellington Centurions, Wellington Thunder and Wellington Crew.

The underlying feeling was that "corny" names such as the Kingz and Knights should be dropped from an official club name, which still left room to develop a nickname, such as Phoenix or Wasps.

"I think FC Wellington would work with the nickname Hornets, like Watford are Watford FC but still have the logo Hornets," wrote Daniel McDonough.

"In addition, you could develop a nickname i.e. Arsenal (the Gunners), Liverpool (the Reds), FC Wellington (the Crazy Gang?)," added Gary Hewson.

Of the other five names, Wellington Phoenix was edging out Wellington Wasps and Wellington Centurions, while Thunder and Crew were proving least popular.

Wasps is a rugby team; Centurion is a gay sauna off K' Road in Auckland; Thunder is an AC/DC song; and "Crew" would have been the most embarrassing name in the history of embarrassing names. We got by so many thousand miles the best option.

Can't play Wellington City home games in Lower Hutt though, unless the supercity becomes a reality.

On Saturday, The Dominion Post published the top six choices of owner Terry Serepisos and asked for feedback. More than 50 per cent of DoomPost readers who have nothing better to do than respond to our pointless polls responses plumped for "FC Wellington".

The underlying feeling from haters was that "corny" names such as the Kingz and Knights should be dropped from an official club name, which still left room to develop a nickname, such as Phoenix or Wasps.

"I think FC Wellington would work with the nickname Hornets, like Watford are Watford FC but still have the logo Hornets," wrote Wellington's most boring man and full time negativity merchant Daniel McDonough.

"In addition, you could develop a nickname i.e. Arsenal (the Gunners), Liverpool (the Reds), FC Wellington (the Crazy Gang?)," added stereotypical Englishman-on-the-street Gary Hewson.

Of the other five names, Wellington Phoenix was edging out Wellington Wasps and Wellington Centurions, while Thunder and Crew were proving least popular.

I thought they changed the wings because it didn't comply with the regulations that the A-League had back then about logos fitting within a shield.

Roar, CCM and Knights didn't have shield shaped logos at the time.
