Maybe the Nix should apply for government funding to set up a charter school ...

Curriculum would include cat culling, Harley Davidson tours and fatty foods. This year in NSW central coast mariners created an alliance with a 'charter school' set up for football and tennis athletes.

Just having a browse through here reminded me of a meeting that was at Ole this week. Big changes there for next year. They are now very closely allied to Wests ; so much so that every kid who is in the Ole program will be registered for Wests ( at least in the under 14's , not sure about the older group). training 4 nights a week , other sports discouraged , participation in Feds/NTC discouraged.5 full time coaches ( 2 of the current ones , I assume 3 more).

Not sure what happens to the kids at wests who may be in the top under 13 side ( for example) who either don't make it through the trials or whose parents can't afford the 2K a year. WOn't be in the Ole program- then no top grade football.Harsh maybe but perhaps necessary.

ALso , if if a kid  wants to do the Ole program but satay at their existing club- tough shit.

Haven't decided what I think about it yet. Oh , expect Kaizen numbers to go up , though.

Yep....I overheard some 13th Grade West Parents discussing this on the sidelines back during the Season....Trial for the "Ole Wests" top team or be in the 2nd etc with usual volunteer coach next year.

Ole has a few non-Wests eligble for 14th Grade in 2014 who have a decision to make & if they switch then  yes, some of the current Wests kids will miss out... but guess this happens every year at Clubs who hold fresh (& honest :-0 ) trials so some kids dont make the team the following year.

The Ole kids also selected for FTC will have to decide wether to accept or decline and stick solely with Ole .

The 99's  FTC squad has several Ole/Wests players so maybe they will now pull out...So far I have heard of 1 who has verbally indicated he's not going to do FTC & maybe some of the previous years "Gold Group" didnt trial for FTC ?.

I think Kaizen has/will lose a few who previously did Kaizen + Ole.... The problem for some with Kaizen to increase their numbers is the logistics of the 6.45am - 8.15am schedule re: getting to school / work etc.

Stu Jacobs (Kaizen) & James Prosser (Ole) are both very good coaches (imho) so its a shame a player cant do both if they so choose, but as previously mentioned it does give more "control" re over training, injuries etc

Ole are "linked" with Ajax & I seem to (vaguely) recall Ajax encourage Judo as an extra sport to participate in,  although to be fair I dont know how competative or what age/standard level they allow their academy kids to do it.

While these sorts of things are really disruptive for regular clubs, they are probably a sign of things to come.

Wests and Ole have done this dance before though. Will be interesting to see how it goes this time around.

So basically that story is: APFA moves to Wellington, takes up residence in Scot's College.

Interesting, but not particularly ground breaking.

EXCEPT that it is now the Wellington Phoenix Football Academy - AND they are advertising for players in Australia's FourFourTwo.
Nix Academy seeking players

So that looks to me like a Welnix business operation. Not sure where that leaves APFA. As a YF memb ...oh; um, supporter - should I now support this WPFA venture? Sure, why not? But I know there are other good players at WYNRS, Ole and clubs; so hopefully my Nix will not exclude those kids who can't afford the $30K per year to go to the Nix/Scots academy.

I need a FAQ for Football School of Excellence as I'm ignorant as to how this actually works. Is it that a group of approx doz. aged16-19ish players train part time/full time as a sort of shadow squad? They play winter club football in Welly (miramar??) and for TW/TW youth in summer? Is that about right? Thanks in anticipation...

This is full of factual inaccuracies.

You don't have to go to Scot's for a start. The APFA was the WPX Academy before it was in Wellington, for another thing.

Nobody has ever said what the Nix Academy actually costs parents, but the owners have said that where a talented player needs financial support they will offer it.

You'd think this is just another avenue for players to get looked at and coached to a good level. There's been no evidence to suggest that players outside the Phoenix setup aren't being considered; witness for example the signing of Ridenton ahead of other players who were in the Phoenix School of Excellence programme.

Don't know enough detail about the move to comment on the move to amalgamate APFA into the WPFA. However I was wondering about the facilities available in wellington. My understanding of the APFA at Lincoln is that it had great facilities.....good fields, lecture rooms, gyms, physio facilities....just about everything that a top Academy should have.

But where will they find something similar in Wellington?. The Nix have just about the worst training facilities I have ever seen for a pro club. Newtown no2 with that tiny shed is an embarassement.

In an ideal world football should take over Newtown no1. Rip up the running track and use the whole facility as Football ground zero for the Nix squad and the Academy and TW's...offices, training facilities etc....won't happen though, not enough money

Pretty sure the 13-17 year old academy will base its training at Scots College.

Pretty average facilities at Scot's. My guess is they'll take them down the road to the new turf at St Pat's town. Or somewhere. Scot's #1 is a bog of the highest order.

Just a follow up to this - I fired out a couple of texts and your numbers sound right.  $30k to attend Scot's and be in the Nix Academy. Bloody expensive. Wonder how much of that is actual cost, and how much is margin?

Jesus, how many players are meant to be in this thing? Is this thing subsidizing the Phoenix or something?

Average private school fee are 20k . So academy fees of $30 as smaller base to spread the cost across.

I have to say I struggle to understand this concept, what are the Phoenix adding to this APFA concept?  What makes this the Wellington Phoenix academy - i.e. what is the Phoenix's role in all of this?

I always wondered where the Academy would be based. The Nix train up at Newtown no2 which must be the most primitive training facilities for any pro club on the planet. Seems like the Academy will be based at the modern new sports facilities at Scots College. So the kids get the glam facilities and the pro team get kitted up in a WCC toilet block and train on a windswept paddock.

By all accounts the Academy when based in Lincoln had ace facilites....gyms, lecture halls, good feilds etc

Having been on a tour of apfa I can confirm the facilities were amazing. Better than most A-league clubs I would have thought

Hearing whispers Wellington Phoenix Football Academy (1998, 1999, 2000) will play as a team(s) in a local junior Capital league. Anyone got any info on that? Have Capital club junior delegates signed off on that, or it it a misplaced rumour?

Also, suggest thread title now changes to: Phoenix Academy

I'd imagine they will register and play for Miramar Rangers as part of the tie up between Rangers, Team (not) Wellington and WPX.

In the same way that all the Ole kids are going to play for Wests next year.

Another possibility is that they'll enter the schools' U15 league as Scot's College. That would be slightly more controversial because schools are (supposedly) not supposed to get involved with kids U14 and below. Scot's and most other colleges have been ignoring that for ages though.

Hm. I'm picking school but we'll see. Never saw an announcement about the winner of the Phoenix academy scholarship - supposedly to be awarded to a Wellington player at the national age group tournament, hosted by Capital in December.

this is cool, but won't it be a bit of an issue, say if we have a really good potential player but he's south american etc he's good enough to make the phoenix however not yet valuable enough to take up a crucial international spot. Won't this just result in the academy players leaving for overseas clubs. It just seems very a very risky investment, im not too sure how long it takes for someone to get residency in nz, so it might not be too bad if it only takes a few years. (im also not sure if this has been covered as i could be bothered reading back through the thread).

This isn't Nix, but it's relevant to this thread re development of young players in the wider region. The school is on the Central Coast and has close ties with CCM.

I see the Phoenix Academy are currently trialling players for new intake. Exciting times.

Yes, yes, but such the pragmatist smithy! New ventures to give kids more opportunities are exciting, and have to start somewhere.
I hope the Nix one and the CCM one build some traction and some players; but yes they will need time.
