Take the NYL back to its original NYL thread.

IMO - As the players would have to be Ozzie registered. They would be expected to play all games in Oz. Flights, accommodation, food etc. Not going to happen unless $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ fall in the next storm.

So leave this for the topic it is.

Blew, I agree Nix NYL ain't going to happen, but I think the point was more about the optimal age to bring in players to FSE. Think we're arguing for 15-17, rather than 17-20.

Yeah let's not talk about our problems everyone.
Are you that bothered we're talking about a NYL team in the Regional Academies/FSE thread?

Why don't we just cut the Mods, and developers work load and have just one thread for everything.

With the FSE the key is the layer that has to be under that.

I agree talk age where's and why's.

The practicality to bring players to Wgtn at 15-17 may be to hard. Education, funding, control and parents etc. So the regional concept through that age group would suit better.

It will happen some day. The current TV deal is $40 million a year of which the clubs are getting ~$25 million of that. Can't remember if that $40 million includes AUS international teams, but otherwise that $15 million is being used on football related matters in Australia. If the HAL were to be separate from the FFA, which I think will happen some day, the 'Nix as a member of a league not tied to closely to a football association should be treated more equally, and with greater revenue in the future should be enough to cover NYL costs.

There are a number of colleges with boarding options in town we could do this with. Yes it will cost but long term it will hopefully give more rewards and possibly pay for itself.

A number = 1. Scot's College.
The only other one is St Pat's Silverstream, and it's a looooooong way away from where players need to be every day.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I stand corrected. I'm not a Welly boy, just had this convo with someone the other day and they said there was a number of options in town.

So regional academies is better - if Silverstream is to far from Wgtn.  Your talking 30 odd boarders -
$15,320.00 per annum Includes Saturdays and Sundays, but with two compulsory Exeats per Term. [Gibb House will close Friday afternoon to Sunday at 6pm].  Terms 1-3 are charged at 30% of total year's fees per term; Term 4 is charged the remaining 10%.

Didnt a bunch of young ladies relocate themselves to Auckland for a year before one of their youth world cups.

The young lads dont have to be at a boarding school, there are other options for them.

That's very true. Homestays etc are another possibility. Require a lot of admin though.

I'm late on this - but yes Thomas turned it down despite being, IMO, a much better prospect (and probably at the time a better played) than Tyler Boyd. He would fit so smoothly into the academy if he decided to join them.

Of course, Declan disowned Tyler when he signed for the Phoenix (he thought it was a bad career move....) so who knows.....

Off topic but heard that one of the long-standing Ole academy coaches was sacked recently after an arguement with Declan.

First name Kyle? Was told he's gone back to the states after being sacked. Not sure how accurate but is the word going round coaching circles.

If true and it's Kyle Segebart that'll be a real shame cos he was a super-nice bloke (albeit with a slightly misleading Wiki page).

The home stay option is a reasonable call, that happens at a lot of clubs in NZ with their import players. Really depends on how organised the club is. Wouldn't be surprised if this hasn't already been explored by the Nix. Just had another thought, there are a lot of foreign students at highschools throughout the Country that stay in people's homes too, so its not an alien concept here.

APFA use homestay but think they're looking to follow Ole and do the boarding thing on site

Update from Ernie, vis Stuff website:

Merrick is also overseeing an overhaul of the football school of excellence programme, with Luke Rowe, Tom Biss and Alec Solomons cut loose.

He said signings would start next month and he wants about eight players in the 16-18 year-old bracket, with another six or seven in the 19-21 range.

Josh Brindell-South, Joel Stevens, Clayton Lewis, Justin Gulley, Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi, Hamish Watson and Tobias Bertsch are some of the names in the mix.

Tell you what, young Jama Boss at Melville is worth looking at. Great technique & determination & needs protection from Nothern L cloggers. But whether he's a Kiwi or not...

Sherminator = Josh South, he is a young Aussie. Talk is he has been offered a contract, depending on fitness.

Came over at 13. I wouldn't be jumping him into the Phoenix ranks just yet, I'd like to see how he goes if he gets a shot with WaiBOP

His name seemed to have cropped up in the last month. Someone said he was Somalian decent? Was he playing for Declan? I know Declan had a lad Awad playing for him.

Whats this kid like?

Another thing which I find interesting and I know there are others that share the same thought, is pretty much everyone from last year has been flicked with the focus on the younger ones. I admire Gareths vision but it looks like Ernie might end up taking the credit for the execution because I think this is the vein they want to go down, young kids prior to age 18.

A few have been kept on - like Gulley, Watson, Bertsch.

Think a lot of us have agreed that the age should have been younger than 18/19 initially.

I reckon at 16 is sort of where NZ player's growth does tend to slow down mainly because they need fulltime football.
The FSE can be that next step and once they are 18 they should be ready for A-League footy

Naturally talented until 16 and then when the body changes and the various other factors come in, that's where the pivot point is? I think that's a fair call.

I think realistically, the Phoenix want to be in the ears of Willy Gerdsen and Darren Bazely as the coaches of the u17s. If this is the cream of the age group then in theory, its these kids that will go into the FSE. I guess considering they picked young Rufer shows that they are paying attention.

You're right on both counts PlaywithFire (bring them in at 16 and need for fulltime footy), but I'd add "in a pro environment". As there is only 1 pro environment in NZ, private academies - APFA, WYNRS, Ole - act as the next best thing for the seriously committed at that age. The only other option is offshore.

I wonder if the club are working on any more academy agreements, or if APFA will be who they try to funnel talent from all NZ into. I would like to see the kids in Welly from about 15-16 but they may try to use academies until they are 18, then pick up the ones that impress for the FSE in Welly.

Be surprised if they thought APFA was the only academy feeder. What about Ole?

Nix need to stick a team in nz asb youth league with a group of 14-16 year olds and a proper reserve side in asb prem sep from TW ranging from 16-18 with perhaps a few overage players

Can't see that happening with Edge there.

Yeah, pretty polarising but surely Ole need a relationship with Nix.

Besides, will Edge still be there when family members transit thru - to US scholarship or wherever?

Yep he's Somalian, was never with Declan I believe, was at Narra and possibly even Wanderers before coming over to Melville for consistent game-time. Good creative player, unlike Awad eh actually scores goals, and loves a bit of a tackle too which is always great to see.

Dubious about whether he can step up into WaiBOP, let alone the Phoenix, but he deserves the opporunity to come off the bench in the ASBP.

If they have those 16-18 years players in the FSE they need a special school which arrange classes around the training times. How is that working?
