why is it that rugby fans call westpac stadium : the cake tin

and us football fans call it: the ring of fire

I think the ring of fire is better for both sports, cake tin sounds lame, whereas ring of fire sounds awesome

anyone got any ideas?

Think you will find that the term "Cake Tin" originated from a case of "P" nus envy in auckland not long after it was completed. From memory it was either on Veitchs or Devlins breakfast show.

cake tin name is used for everything from cricket to music events at the stadium because that is exactly wat the stadium is a circle shaped piece of tin. ring of fire certainly wouldnt suit cricket or fergie for that matter as its just not exciting mate. call it what you want. its the westpac stadium.

When I lived in Welly, pre Nix, it was always known as The Stadium. Only JAFAs called it the Caketin.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I live in Wellington, dislike rugby and cricket, but always called it the Cake Tin - coz that's what it looks like. So it's not just JAFAs and egg-chasers that call it that.

All right. JAFAs, Brighton fans and people who dress up as American motorcycle cops and go and get pissed up while watching mini-rugby call it the Cake Tin. Is that better! Jag2008-01-18 11:55:16

why would it not suit the Wellington Cricket events - they are the firebirds after all, Firebirds logo looks similar to the Phoenix.

I've lived in Wellington for quite a few years and it's pretty much always called the Cake Tin. It's got nothing to do with sports elitism or Auckland mocking - look at the thing!

And it's home to the best sporting team in the country!

Out of curiosity, where is the actual Phoenix head office?

Well we will have to remove "Westpac' from the Stadium for 2011 rugby world cup....so it may require a specific name. Like AMI Stadium (formerly Jade Stadium), its real name is Lancaster Park.

I say tackle him in the face.

"Cake Tin" was first coined by Mr Devlin on Radio Sport, from there its kinda stuck, some use it affectionately, most from Auckland media with a bit of venom in the usage, mainly through jealousy that they can't get a waterfront stadium like ours. Ring of Fire is so much cooler!

When the Ring of Fire was thought up, was Johnny Cash the inspiration or did the song get assigned after?

By the way, there's a song the England Supporters Band always play. For years I've heard the tune and just hummed along. After hearing Johhny Cash played at Nix games, I realise that the Band have been playing the melody from Ring of Fire all along. Coincidence or plagiarism?

Wellington Stadium I guess. Or the RFU/Council/Some other interested party will give it a name half the world hates.

It would be cool if we could come up with a cool name.....eg. Carisbrook, Eden Park or W.C.G

Wellington Cricket Ground.

Maybe "Santies DISCO Stadium" ..?
"Bede Dwyer's Ring of Fire" has a brilliant ring to it though.
Yeah, definitely the latter...

Beloved? Am I the only one who doesn't really like it much? It's the wrong shape for football.

Mr Dylan, you yourself did a duet with Johnny Cash singing Ring of Fire! You were horrendously off key though, while Johnny was spot on. Perhaps a case of sour grapes here...
Anyway..

Bring back George park...or B0B0 Bald3 stadium?

The crowd are a bit far away from the pitch which I don't really like, but other than that its a good stadium.

not many places in the world you get a stadium 5 minute walk to the gud pubs... or 15 minute walk to the centre of town. the stadium is a gud multi purpose sports venue for an open minded sports fan who likes all sports including football - sure its the most popular sport in the world but by far not the only. you don't see old trafford just used as a soccer pitch do u.

That's not relevant really. You think Man Utd fans like Old Trafford because it can be used for things other than football? Of course it's a football venue and the rest is secondary.

The difference is that we are merely tenants at our Stadium. It's not really a part of our identity.
