What's really wrong with the Wellington Phoenix?

so my understanding of all of this:

FFA want us out because they think its better to have more local derbies - yet they also want to expand the league?

The expansion frnachisees eant us out cos they think we are taking their place - yet they cant raise the revenue that the FFA require to join the league - NIX can and do.

Kosmina and Bosnich (FOX) want us gone cos we add nothing to the league, we dont grow aussie youth (we actually do), we dont provide enough telly revenue (yet without us you lose anything sky provides), we are losing (just like all the other teams have done before us)

in short all of these arguments are in part true but in no way are they justifications to drop us from a league which at its heart needs to grow.

Yep I must have dreamed these bids ... South Melbourne, Adelaide City, Two Bids from Brisbane sides, a Tasmanian bid, Casey Dandy bid, Southern Bid, A Campbelltown bid team, Woolongong bid, Canberra bid team, Sunshine Coast bid.

Must also have dreamed the existing clubs have stated they want expansion ...

An observation, look at the Joined dates of many of these disenfranchised Feverites. It beggars belief that the club has alienated these long standing fans.

Yes. It beggars belief. Are you discounting the possibility of "astro-turfing" by existing anti-Nix types?

We see here again the phenomenon where members are agitated enough to TELL OTHER PEOPLE to protest, which smacks of entitlement and laziness.

Only when people are motivated to PROTEST THEMSELVES, REGARDLESS OF PERSONAL INCONVENIENCE, will a protest happen.

If any of these bids were viable we would already have a 12-team league, at least. We had a 12-team league once, remember.

Every one of them no doubt to be successful on and off the pitch whilst generating lots of income for the league.

I’m a Foundation Member and haven’t been to the last three home games as I have lost all interest in watching the Nix

I get more enjoyment in going to the TeeDubs home games, even watching the WeeNix has little attraction

If the owners know of our discontent and the Sponsors know, it shows that they either A don't give a fudge about the real supporters whom have been here for a number of years, they don't give a fudge about alienating fans or someone's ego is too much that they will admit to making a great tactical error and right what is wrong. And to be straight up about it, I am looking straight at the person representing Wuway whom may or may not have requested the venue change!

Don't think we ever got to 12 in A-League, but there were 11 for one season. (Heart's 1st season, & before Fury folded)

The number is actually meaningless.  The point remains that Wellington Phoenix is not the reason for other bids not succeeding. They are not succeeding on their own merits according to FFA.  And so far FFA has not said "sorry chaps, we would love to let you in, but we only have room for ten clubs here as we prefer the A-League comp to be exclusive and boutique, like, ten teams tops preferably eight, and that darn Wellington Phoenix is squatting on a licence that could rightfully be yours if you have a spare couple of mill lying around in your desk drawer"

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

I’m not sure that everyone saw the supposed humour in this banner

We have no alternative to Welnix, so it wasn’t an achievable aim, rather a generic black humour reference to British football clubs when yet another season has turned to shark

OK chaps.  So that's why we might keep a place in the A League.  Jolly hockey sticks and glad we got that off our chest.  (And that was informative and interesting).

But back on topic, why are we crap?

We don't spend enough?

We spend too much time managing sponsors and minimising costs and don't concentrate on what's needed for a successful football operation?

The budget is OK but we don't have the right football focused people at the club making decent football decisions?

The much hoped for pipeline of cheap kiwi starters out of the academy haven't really started to get out the end of the pipe yet?  And without them the budget is too tight? Otherwise OK.

The travel and international window issue makes it all too hard?

Any other candidates?  I think a combination of all of the above, but I really have no idea.

OK.... tis to laugh Viable is it ...

Viable .... hhhmmmmm Southern Bid are talking about building a 300 million dollar stadium .... South Melbourne already have a stadium they control and have lots of backing...the Tassie bid has the backing of the Australian government, Tasmanian  Government, Local government with a purpose build 12 K stadium... the two Queensland bids have backing... One has offered to take over Ballymore from Rugby Union...The other to build a small stadium if council provide land... The Sunshine Coast bid is backed by a billionaire ... the Gong bid is backed by one of Australia's wealthiest business persons who BTW has the countries biggest regional TV network... Liverpool, Fairfield and Campbelltown councils have also offered to back local bids and each has the support of the NSW government ... Campbelltown already has an 18K stadium next to a railway station...

Whats holding it up is Steven Lowy as he will loose control of the league and at present the media deal is not enough to support what the clubs want...

Massive talk about having an independent A-League who will control their revenue....

The clubs are screaming for expansion ... they believe they can sell the extra games to broadcasters...

I think so don't hold me to it ... but me thinks their have been about 15 bids received of which arguably 6 are ready to go now.

Arguably the strongest bid ... Southern ... look at the stadium...

League, schmeague.

From where I sit/stand the fundamental issues for the Nix haven't changed:

  • Arses on seats.
  • Points in the HAL.

These are the points that need to be addressed and if they can be, much of the noise from across the ditch (and this side too), will fade away.

My big question is the Football Committee. Whoever has been making footballing decisions whether individually or collectively has been having a 'mare over recent years.

In any organisation (and I've worked in/with/for a few); making decisions by committee (be it actual or virtual) is rarely a pathway to sustained success. It's like playing in a team when you're getting messages from the coach; the captain; assistant coaches; oh, and a whole committee - unless all those messages are consistent, you're going to get confused, and more than that, you're team mates are unlikely to end up on the same page you are.

Imo we need a DoF (or whatever they want to call him/her) who has the right background and can put a framework in place around our HC that let's them get on with their role. Darije has said publicly how much more he has to do/deal with beyond simply coaching the team.

I don't know who; all you footballing genii can undoubtedly answer that - but someone with the organisational (professional) footballing nous to provide our coaching staff and players with what they need to focus solely on the two areas highlighted above.

Get the football committee out of it. We have a board, that's enough.

Keep it simple and make people accountable. Sorted.

COYN!

I find it strange, even for the club, that there's still been no announcement of this on any of their channels.

Surely they may as well own the decision and work towards getting bums on seats for this game in Auckland...

And if they are viable we will have a 12 team league.  The Phoenix is not stopping them from coming in.  Explain how the Phoenix are preventing the presence of these fantastic clubs cominmg into the league.

Also, they've already got your money, why do they care?

Once again - a lot of people who are happy to clog up forums (Twitter, FB) yelling about stuff. Dome doesn't give a damn. Protests at the ground with international TV cameras watching - that would create a negative buzz they might care about.

People get away with stuff because people who get angry can't get off their arses to make a stink.

Hi all,

Australia here, here to help.

1. WELLINGTON IS TALKING TO THE WRONG AUSTRALIAN

By that I mean, the Aussie Soccer Community is largely run by Euro-Aussies, so to 'talk' to the Australian Soccer Community, the Phoenix need to talk to the Euro-Aussies in Australia, not the anglo-Aussies

2. FORM ALLIANCES WITH GOOD AUSSIE NPL CLUBS

Similar to point 1 above, the Euro-Aussies involved at NPL level may feel alienated from the Main Show, as the Nix are alienated by many in the Australian Soccer Community, the Nix should form alliances with Euro Historic-based NPL clubs.

3 REMEMBER WHO IS PAYING THE BILLS

If Fox Sports are the source of income for the players wages, then the Nix should ask "what do Australian TV audiences want to see from us, to watch our games". If that means hiring Serbs/Croats/Italians and Greeks, until Wellington find its feet, then cater to that market.

4, WHAT KIWI SOCCER THINGS WORK IN AUSTRALIA

Kosta Barby and Marco Rojas worked in Australia, especially in Melbourne (a rather cosmopolitan city), as they are Kiwi-Ethnics, sending over plain old Joe Smith from Auckland won't excite the Aussie Soccer Fraternity, unless plain old Joe Smith from Auckland offers something to the Aussie Soccer Market that is NOT there otherwise....

The club worked when Pignata was CEO, as he "got" the Australian Soccer market....Pignata is Italo-Australian....

Nighty night.

Great post, fellow Aussie.

Just in regards to Point #2, West Torrens Birkalla currently have a 2013 Nix guernsey hanging up in the club rooms, so there is more potential there for a bigger alliance, considering Birks' logo has a phoenix in it as well.

At either of our last home games (Or both) we fill the zone with as many from around the ground as will come and help. We wait till kickoff then all orderly wall out onto the concourse leaving the zone empty. We then go around to aisle 9 & 10 (?) below where the cameras are and re-establish our support of the team there, leaving the zone empty for the cameras but we still support the team and don't miss the game??

Just an idea and it is peaceful and it makes a point of some kind..and we'll be in the shade!

Brilliant way to get the point across. Have a banner over the Zone to get maximum camera time. I was going to say that we need all the support we can get, so not attending the game and leaving the Nix with a shark attendance will only leave us in a more volatile situation.

I'm not going to protest because I don't feel as strongly as you do (in fact, I like two more games in Auckland). I am pointing out that big-bellying around on the forums does jack-shark to change anything.

This is honestly what I find gross. People who are willing to grumble and whine and not to do anything. And when challenged to do something, they yell for someone ELSE to do something. It's as if they can't actually envisage taking any action that doesn't involve talking tough online.

What's wrong with the Nix? Their constant lack of communication with fans! The change of venue was announced on Monday and still no email from them. I assume they will just send out their general email Friday afternoon but you would think if they wanted to handle this better, they would have sent a separate email to members.
