Similar to disco_mart's thread, are we able to shed some light on the whereabouts and future of a one David Mulligan? He arrives last year to great plaudits, turns out to be sh*t (though we know he can play better and DOES for the AWs), and he never plays again for the rest of the season. He's still under contract right? Will he be used this season? I know that if I had left a League One/Two (?) club to come play for my home country's only team, I'd be p*ssed off at not getting a look in at the team.

as far as I know he's contracted for another year at least. From what I remember he under performed (like most of the team to be honest) early in the A-league last year and was subbed off.
I think he's one of those player who does better with his national side than with his club. That being said, maybe he'll get a run or two again this season, and who knows that he'll show us what he's worth.

If he doesn't, he's definitely going at some stage.

Yeah, he's contracted till the end of the upcoming season. Hopefully he'll get a run in the reserve team this season, provided it goes ahead, and maybe he'll have a chance to push for a spot in the first team... Maybe challenge Lochy for the LB spot?

remember he can be used like Plodder and Lia, through the midfield as well as wide defence.
You know we belong together...

He played three times - all at right-back - in rounds 3-5 against Adelaide (L 0-3), CCM (D 0-0) and Perth (L 0-1) and then wasn't seen in the matchday squad again.

He was dropped for the home win against Sydney in round six, which was when Siggy staked his claim in the back-four - after being CB for that game, Siggy played at RB for the next four games and moved back to CB after that...and Muscat came back in at RB and pretty much kept his spot.

I really don't think RB is Mulligan's best position, but he didn't get a look-in in a squad full of midfielders and I'm not sure that'll change much without injuries.  McKain and Brown have the inside running on the defensive midfield slots and with Lia coming back, I think he's likely to feature prominently.  Add Ferrante, Diego, Bertos, Hearfield, Daniel and possibly Christie and Kruse and there aren't a lot of openings there for Mulligan.

Ironically, his best chance of a run might be if Muscat or Lochhead is injured, but like I say, I don't think fullback is his best position.

Just my 2 cents....

Yeah I do agree with that. I'm really hoping we can sign up some more fullbacks or see Lia playing there because I'd like to think we could do better in these two spots

My understanding, and observation of Mulligan is he rates himself a bit highly without actually putting in the hard graft and proving he's worth a starting or bench spot....has a slightly high and mighty attitude and isn't particularly well liked in the squad.....

Not revealing sauces (HP) but this is based on my observations and some conversations with others closer to the heart of the club than I am......

Not at all true. He's had an outstanding club career so far (over 150 league appearances) and has performed to good advantage in the midfield and defence (akhough he struggled there last year) would be an ideal bench player and woul be eager 2 prove himself

I'd actually like to see him released and come back here to the UK.

It's no good him rotting on the bench at the Phoenix when he has the potential to do better.  As to the attitude thing that might be down to having played professionally longer then vertually everyone else in the squad and may have also picked some banter from his time here (uk) as well.

This is really, and I mean REALLY, stretching things. He's had decent time and experience playing at a highish level in England, but outstanding club career? You're 'avin us, aren't ya?

Yes agree also.  He would crap himself every time he got the ball in his own half with the opposition bearing down on him.

I'm too busy with work to take time off and watch them train for now.

He possesses a nice sliding tackle (not the rude or fishing type)

Im comparing him to other people in the team and players at this level. His club career would definetely be one of the most successful in the team going that many of our players havent played at the level he has.

BINGO! His distribution, touch and vision were hilariously woeful in the few appearances he made last year.

If anyone doesn't agree; seriously, go back and watch those games again, focussing on him. He would isolate himself terribly at right back, take half a dozen touches, and then, panicking, welly the ball over the sideline. I've actually never seen a "professional" footballer perform that badly before. And this was despite having high hopes, mainly dating way back to when he was in the NZ U-17 WC team (about 10 years ago now right?)

Hearing how he played against the Wellington weekenders, do you think he is now more deserving of a place in the squad, at least on the bench in place of players such as Hearfield and Ferrante?

I hear that.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

No.  If one of our defenders went down I'd rather have Lia slot in at right back.

Leave out with bashing our own team - when was the last time you saw him play?
He's been doing alright in reserve games.

I concur there bevan, perhaps time to see if he has learnt anything over the last season or so. He certainly is no worse than Pie Man or G**. I say, give the guy a break (Not his leg either) and see how he goes. After all Smeltz was playing Conference Leaguer and look at him now - Well for the All Whites anyway.
