Well it's not to say it won't be in tomorrow or next week. There are letters in there today responding to things from Monday or Tuesday.

quite often good responses to topical letters get in a week later. From what I've seen, not that I religiously read the letters to the ed.

Personally, I'd lock this thread off. Some of the posts are so far in breach of your own forum rule #4 that I'm surprised the mods have tolerated it up until now.

See what happens when News goes on holiday!

Have deleted a mountain of posts this morning but am leaving this open because intelligence seems to have temporarily returned.

Please play the ball not the man.  Steinbauer has done football a favour by getting some publicity, so debate his comments all you like, but leave him out of it.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

You've done a good job. There's a worthwhile discussion in here when you get rid of all the crap!

My thoughts exactly Urion.

The fact is Herbert's coped one critical letter in the paper, which is a mile away from the public and media inquisition that Henry went through. He'll know he's good at his job, he only has to look at this forum, talk to his players, or see people walking around in Retro Ricki's and I'm sure this letter will be like water of a duck's back.

At the end of this season I'm going to put in a letter to the editor highlighting the positives that have come out of the Phoenix. Good news is always welcome, more likely to get printed and counters the odd negative gripe.

Good to see there's a lot of passion invested in the debate!

I suppose, maybe understandably, we're all a bit sensitive about any criticism of our team but we have to realise that the bigger we get, the more people will be voicing opinions that we might not agree with. We're also a bit cocooned in here as we're, more or less, all singing from the same hymn sheet.

His letter, despite the inaccuracies contained in it, wasn't abusive and did try to offer some form of constructive criticism.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

His letter was well reasoned despite the inaccuracies and it was fantastic to see a letter about the Nix not only in the paper but the feature letter as well.

I hope people don't attack critics in the shameless way we've seen in this thread in the future.

People also have to realise that the bigger the whole thing gets the less likely it is that even within YF there will be a common view.

There are signs that YF is just starting to go through the growing pains where either the hardcore (who've mostly been in from the start) have to just let it go and it becomes all things to all people, or factions and break-aways start to form. It's not a bad thing because it's a symptom of success and that's just the way social groups evolve.

I can see it causing some stress for a minority who have a very specific (or blinkered) view of what YF is and what it means to them, however, which would be a shame. Everybody just relax, support the Phoenix and accept that diversity makes an organisation stronger not weaker.

I have just read through this thread for the first time, and I think the key things that need to be kept in mind is that there have been numerous threads on this board over the season sl*gging off players which have been tolerated because everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Just because this one is slightly more ludicrous than some of them, everyone (including people who have contributed to the other threads) is up in arms.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

First line of this thread.
GO RICKI

Maybe we all stop now and post your comments direct to the Dominion Post. They provoked this by having one persons sack the coach as a feature letter.  It has now pitted FOOTBALL with the Rugby - Rugby League - Cricket - etc, when we loss we sack the coach, the other members of the squad do no wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well off to Gosford Now good night.

I've sent a response letter to the dompost, we'll see if it get's printed.

Sir/ Madam,

MATTHEW STEINBAUER writes (17 Jan 08) that Ricki Herberts time at the helm of the Wellington Phoenix is up, and that he should be replaced. Living in the UK, I am all too aware of how tempting it is to sack coaches and managers when things dont go perfectly at a football club. Fortunately, the tide is turning here with many voices calling for managers to be given more time in order to build winning sides, citing Sir Alex Fergusson as a prime example.

Wellington are still building a core of players with the capability to play at this level. This years team, whilst brave, were shown to be lacking in certain areas as pointed out by your correspondent. The remedy is not a change of coaching staff but a reshape of the playing strength available. Top league players were hard to lure to the Phoenix this season. But it has now been shown that Wellington will support this club, and that it has potential to be a big name in Australasian football. Strong players will not shy away from the Phoenix in future and Herbert must be given another season in charge.
