Check letters to Editor Dom post 17/01/08.  Respond direct to the editor and show the country the support we have for RIcki.

ha somewhat agree with him... with our defence who would play 3 at the back. ricki best man there at the moment just get rid of that shod defence (old, christie). still backing ricki were not newcastle united here.

To walk you first must stand up and fall down a few times. It is all part of learning.

We started the season with 4 defenders and concedied more goals.

Financial meltdown perhaps?  Stupid letter to the editor, more fuel to the fire of the Phoenix knockers who will conveniently ignore that Ricky had an incredibly difficult assignment in his first season.  Graham Henry didn't get the sack and he had four years and a whole lot of taxpayer dollars....

Are you asking why the Knights got dropped?
The Knights got dropped because their backroom setup and and public support where both very poor. Remember the Knights had just as long as all the other A-league teams to get the club and the players together; the Nix had four months(?) before the start of this season yet we've got more points than the Knights did.

That's a bit harsh BD. I think that he just doesn't quite understand what the situatuion is. We have to admit that most of the players we signed were rejects from other A-League clubs and IMO we did really well for how long we had to get the whole thing together. Rikki Herbert is the best coach in this country IMO and he will be scouting his heart out in search of at least two more quality defenders for next season.

Rikki should be applauded for how much the whole side has improved from the first two months of the season, not scolded for losing to clubs really actually three years older than us (and older in a couple of cases).

Can anybody post a bit more detail on what was said/written? Doesn't seem to be a 'Letters' page on the Online version of the Dom.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

What's so wrong about someone highlighting some of the failings of the coaching at the Nix in public? Good on him -the particular points he made about the defensive set up are valid. I too expected better given the time the coaches had during the break. Since then though the Nix have gone backwards rapidly whilst most other teams have improved (CCM and Adelaide the exceptions). Surely this can't all be down to the players. Also, everyone has been happy to have goes at the players from time to time in this forum so why should the coaching be off limits from criticism?

the difference is Righstr that any niggles about players are as you say voiced on this board, not in public

haven't read it so can't comment on the details, but i don't think Steinbauer has done the club any good with this - and i believe that fans should think about any effects of their actions on the club

because he calls for the coach to be sacked because he played 3 at the back instead of 4??? i didnt know Phoenix were running a stalin-newcastle like regime here in wellington. you hav to give a coach time, resources and a bloody good agent to get a good defence. im sure the backline ricki has is not his dream backline but from what he has had available from a defence made up of unwanted a-league player hes done very well. let him be and still i ask matthew steinbauer WHO the f**king hell r u.

His argument broken down:
-Ricki has persisted with playing a back 3.
-The back 3 isn't working.
-Ricki should be fired.
-Stu Jacobs should replace him!

Apologies, though questioning government policy by means of a letter to the editor seems to me, for some reason, Ok.  I do wonder though how wide spread are these letters read these days.

Okay...

[quote]Soccer coach Ricki Herbert has done a fine job kicking off the Phoenix debut season in the A-League, but his time is up and was some matches ago.
His intention to play attacking football was clear from the beginning with a 3-5-2 formation and his signing of Brazilian players. This would be fine were his three backs world class. Otherwise, he was expecting far too much of them but persists with a strategy that is clearly not working.
I and many others are disappointed with Herbert and it's worse when we see a great crowd that deserves a lot more.
To hear of the marathon training done over the Christmas break is a let-down when the team should have been working extensively on defence with four backs.
Who should replace Herbert? Stu Jacobs.

Looks like two issues here to address:
1.Should criticisms of the Nix be aired in public? Well, this forum is public too (it doesn't take much to sign up and read the posts) so no real difference between writing to the Dom and posting here. And at least we know his name - ballsy stuff because he doesn't know who we are. Plus the Nix are happy to have the Dom write positive articles about Terry, Ricky et al so should be prepared to accept things coming the other way.
2. The crticisms themselves.  Are they valid? The letter jumped to an extreme conclusion ie sack Ricky appoint Stu. He hasn't referred to the usual mitigating reasons - lack of time, new club , give us a chance et etc. But for me he is right in pointing the finger at the coaches, they must take some blame for what has happened since the Xmas break.

I agree that the coaches should be held accountable but they do need time. We should hold on reviewing Rikki's position until this time next year. The writer of that letter must not realise that Stu is Rikki's right hand man and some of the coaching ineffectiveness is quite likely down to him a well as Rikki.

Steinbauer is right. We are not top of the league. We haven't had sell out crowds every week. We haven't kept a clean sheet every week. We've averaged less then five goals a match. Ross Aloisi hasn't been picked as World Player of the Year. It's been a disaster... Ricki must go!

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

World class backs. So we should sign players like John Terry and William Gallas?

"3-5-2 from the start". We started with 442. When Clebo didn't work, 352 resulted.

Cheers for posting that, yomcat. Intereresting.

For starters, we didn't play 3 at the back from the beginning. I may be wrong, and it might be selective memory, but hasn't playing with 3 at the back been generally more effective for us than  a back four was?

I'm also intrigued by the "I and many others are disappointed...." line. I would think that this Forum represents a sizeable proportion, and cross section, of the hard core Nix support and I don't recall anyone posting about how disappointed they've been with Ricki's performance.

Suggesting sacking the coach is a bit over the top but the bloke is entitled to his opinion. He's also entitled to air that opinion in public, no matter how we may disagree with it

How can I put this, I strongly suspect that Mr Steinbauer isn't a season ticket holder and hasn't spent too much time (if any) in the Fever Zone!!

Maybe it's Happyted trying to wind us up again.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

re his 'points'

as someone may have already pointed out we didn't start with 3-5-2 (edit  -not you Jag, someone before  -my memory's not that bad )

2 of the 4 Brazilians are class in this league

and his rumours of 'Marathon' ?? training - are as far as i know just rumours, and at training yesterday a back four was in place

in conclusion, ricki's made it clear that he wants to both entertain and win - and in my view he will achieve that

I wasn't being particularly serious. Its just one of those pet hates that I have (and I'm sure others do). I think most people agree the writer is welcome to his option and to express it in the public, however hes a bit misguided on some points (i.e. formation at start of season, that stu is ricki's assistant, the lack of preparation time etc).

Perhaps someone would like to write a response letter to the Dom Post.

The guy who wrote to the Dom about th8is clearly hasn't been watching the Phonenix play, we started the season with 4 at the back, they were terrible, we then dumped Cleberson brought in Rees and chaged to 3 at the back, since the change barring a few lapses the "d" has been heaps better. True we probably need some better defensive p[layers, but given the fact that the nix were pulled together in 2/3 months instead of the normal 6+ months of establishing a team i think we've performed admirably.

Looking forward to next season, ricki not only has longer to prepare, he also has a good bunch of guys to build upon!

How can he be sacked? We can still finish 7th which is higher than the kingz and knights even looked like doing, we've played a better brand of footy, scored more goals etc, and been very competitive. Excluding a fair amount of new team gliches, we could eassily be cometing for top four - i think based on this season the expectations can be fairly high for next season.

Lets face it, we are never going to able to afford to bring in many superstars, the salary cap blocks that quite well, at the moment we can look back and say we were competitive, and played well, we lost a few opportunities, next season its all looking very positive for a really good season.
