I read today that Manly played NZ Warriors crowd about 7, 000, .......Do the Nix's out draw NZW as this crowd figure indicates.

If the Warriors are winning they will get bigger crowds so fickle are their supporters,be interesting to see Phoenix crowds if we start winning, could make big difference.

Such a sad scenario, says a lot about auckland fans in general really.

And that's why the Phoenix is down in Wellington.  We're true supporters unlike the fair weather jaffas.

It says it all about NZ sports "fans" in general. They know nothing about loyalty, and will only watch when their team is winning. The media have to take a lot of the blame, turning on teams at the first sign of a downturn in fortunes.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Can't agree with you - I think you'll find mst Wellingtonians, in aprticular, will support their team whether they are winning or not, take a look at the Hurricanes, and Lions supporters. And then of course you have us the Nix faithful! Personally I think you'll see that the Auyckland fans are the worst for being fair weater friends, the cantabs have never experienced a loosing team so who knows, the Otago lot are pretty bad as well for not showiong up when their boys are loosing.

First game got the novelty factor as did the other three highlighted games, all the other matches held reasonably steady......

If we're looking at population bases compared to ticket sales, Wellington is probably one of the highest in the league.  For example we have 400,000 people and Sydney has 4 million.  For Sydney FC to get the same % of supporters to their games they need 80-140,000 people at their games.  Course the Mariners and Newcastle probably fall into that same 4 mill pop but we're still really up there comparatively.

One of my workmates from Sweden commented that he couldn't believe the size of the Ring of Fire when he got to Wellington, a 30,000+ seat stadium in a city of 400,000 is unheard of across most of Europe.

Interesting points bobboltontawa2, but I think they are too simplistic.  I believe too many sport teams market themselves on star players and "we will win". When stars get hurt or traded, or the team starts to tank regularly, fans feel lied to.

What's needed is a little more creativity and passion. Pity no one seems to be interested in creating enthusiasm and passion for sport.

The All Blacks vs Ireland was a prime example of a supporters being afraid of the cold. Even though the All Blacks win almost every game. People just seem to turn up depending on the weather, it seems quite weak. Especially as New Zealanders are supposed to be brave and rugged.

The conditions for the Irish game in Wellington were extreme though! Random mental weather.  A lot of people came and went. Watching sport is meant to be enjoyable too, and if you are sitting in crazy rain/wind like that night then it woudln't be much fun!

But i do agree with you !! :) The Phoenix numbers dropped off a bit on the cold nights as well. In normal cold weather, people should just hardern up!

Looking at the two lots of crowd figures .........the Niox is not that far behind and in year one well F me that huge.

NZW are drawing less this year and if you draw more .......... that is good news and make some headlines I am sure .......... also make business sit up and take notice.

    2007 NZW home average was 13, 225 to date in 2008 is 11, 745 (http://stats.rleague.com/rl/crowds/auckland.html)

Nix average season one 11, 863 without the B match. WOW that is very impressive .

BTW thanks for those who posted crowd figures.
