Before we start - we can't pick Manny because for the foreseeable future, he's our RB.

I mainly asking because of how much anti Brown talk there is (me included) but when you look at our midfielders individually, no one stands out as being "quality".

Brown has the best scoring record easily - but is awol all the time.
Ward is technically our best player, but has only 1 assit and no goals
Bertos is a shadow of himself
Sanchez - too early to say and has injury problems

....It just keeps going.

I would love to hear how Ricki rates our players, especially Brown and if he is aware of what the wider public thinks about him as a player (not that i expect him to listen to our rants).

Still - our best midfielder / most valuable at this time (and i hate to say it) has got to be Brown!

Only because i'd rather have a player qho goes awol for 89 minutes then pops up to score than a midfielder i see all day, but never does anything of value.

I thought some of our best midfield play this season was against Perth.  A midfield of Ward, Smith with Sanchez playing in front. Note NO Brown or Lia that game

Agreed - though I think Lia can do the same job as Smith but has better passing ability

With the criteria you have mentioned, we don't have any really good midfield players.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Id go for Sanchez, Lia + 1 - currently I would have browny in there for some goals, ward has more impact off bench than brown would, plus versatile.

Id have Smith and Ward on bench as cover for all front third positions.

I don't really think Ward should start in the mid unless Manny is behind him, he's too dodgy with the ball. He gives it away in absurd positions. should start over Bertos on the wing though.
Personal opinion of our best midfield would be Manny Lia and Sanchez, but Smith has been serviceable. Also I'm beginning see the merit in Greenie replacing brown in the midfield, or maybe Sanchez's spot whilst injured. Obviously we don't have a replacement RB, or striker, so Manny and Greenie aren't able to play in the midfield.CloneMM2011-11-20 23:06:24

you are kidding right, Lia's tough has been woeful, the likelyhood is that he'll lose it before passing it.....Smith at least offers some attacking ability....our current problem stems from the fact that both Brown and Lia are defensively minded - or at least that's how they play. Smith, sanchez and ward to a lesser degree are more attacking.

Queenslander 3x a year.

No sh*t, but we always set up with at least one DM - usually 2. I have seen nothing from Smith that tells me he is a better player than Lia, who I admit is average to start with. Lia can at least switch play - haven't seen this from Smith. Actually, I haven't seen anything from Smith apart from a few good tackles - where did you get this 'attacking ability' stuff from? His first touch of the ball where he hit the side netting?

Our current problems don't stem from the fact theyre defensively minded - our current problems stem from the fact that we have trouble shifting it from defence to attack because Brown has such poor passing ability and we can't long ball it because it's just Greenie up there. Sanchez really helped with our transition play I thought which is why we're missing him so much.

I think our key problem is that Leo is too defensively minded now. He will make a decent 15-20 run but then stop and go backwards again. He will actually go back more often that he goes forwards. He still has the top end pace but his acceleration has dropped off dramatically. That is his main issues in my mind.

Its no longer a problem.

Smith is an attacking midfield player we stop-gapped into defensive side of midfield when we had the suspension/injury crisis earlier in the season.

I think a lot of the reason why our wide play isn't so great the moment is because Manny and Lochy aren't overlapping like they used to - that is a huge part of our game. If our fullbacks don't overlap and are pushed back then we're basically screwed.

I realise that but I'm going off what i've seen - and I have seen nothing from him to indicate to me that he would be a good attacking option for us. He barely made a forward pass in that attacking midfield role against Adelaide. Now, you could put that down to poor service from Lia and Brown but still..

If people are going to be harsh on Brown for being invisible (when he still pops up with goals) then we've gotta apply similar standards to the rest.

I'd like to see something like:

        Smith   Sanchez
Ifill                              Ward
             Manny

Smith can drop a bit deaper & Sanchez can push further forward, but I really think one Manny is all we need at DM (that's if we could find someone to cover RB...), those 5 in the middle should be enough both offensively & defensively...

Also they all have good skills, and have the ability to create.

PS: i know this probably won't ever happen
