Why Didn't Smeltz..

Money does talk....

I think we originally tried to get him on a bargain to resign, missed, gold coast came in gave a better offer and took it.  Then we realised he was going and then decided to up the deal.

I have no doubt GC were chatting to him before they were meant to, why wouldnt you.

And $$ does talk.  Its not like this league is the premiership and goes on all year, its only 28weeks long.  If we were offering an extra $100K as a marque player, thats another $3500 per week for 28weeks.

Would you say no to that ?

Oh and for Mrs Smeltz an extra 100K = 500 pairs of $200 shoes

Sure money talks and maybe if we'd offered him $1M then he might have stayed.

But if that's what it would take then would we not be better spending that on a striker worth $1M and one that wants to be here.

To put that another way, some people have been saying we should have offered him more, some (are you reading this Mr Hay) even saying whatever it takes, to make him stay. But if that number is a really big number (and it sounds like it would be - especially for an A League striker) then we should investigate what else is available for that money on the market.

We could well end up with someone better than Smeltz and someone who wants to be here.

I can see your point but in ths there is a huge financial loss if the striker fails to fire....
Take Sydney splashing out 1.2 mill for Aloisi this year and his return in form of goals has been very scarce and lets face it we aren't going to find a striker with the pedigree of Aloisi in his prime who wants to cum to Wellington. I say we buy 2 good proven strikers in the A league like Matty simon or maybe Nikita Rukayvitsa.

With Kwasnik still at the club who knows maybe he will find sum form next season....

I agree. Money does talk. And if Smeltzy keeps saying that he did it for his family I believe it. However, he could have profited from a lucrative contract here, and that would have been beneficial to his family, i.e. shoes for the missus and a nice college fund for his little devils!!

Plus he could have been a big football fish in a smaller football pond, but quite obviously he didn't want to.
That said, I think Terry and Tony should have gone out of their way to keep him. He is just so good. Remember, once he's gone, who the hell is gonna score 10+ goals per season??? I ain't, so they better sign some quality strikers cause we gonna miss Smeltzy!

Agree with first point.

I did say think...

But come on, your playing football for a living and its time to renew contract and you get offered a blank cheque and you say no to join a team in the same league for less pay, it doesn't make sense.

The only way is see it folding is if Smeltz had said, he's leaving and then Tony would have said what's it going to take to keep you to stay?

I think we could have done more earlier to keep him that's all.

Home cooking, laundry, mowing the lawns perhaps? I've just read this thread and there's more knobs on here than in the rest of the site put together.

Every semi-decent A-League striker is signed up for another year next season except Nik Mrdja. (who I don't rate and is injury prone) Ruka and Simon are definately signed up.

Terry's business is in a financial crisis, but look at those finance company owners where the finance company went bust, they're still living it up on an island somewhere. /Hopefullness
How do you know this? Or is that just baseless speculation?

I don't know Terry's situation but yes, it is hopefulness, as I said.

As for the dude who's finance company went bust, but because he took plenty of money out of the company and into his own account, they're on the news all the time.

Didn't he sign when the phoenix were playing rubbish? could have been an influence, wouldn't want to have another year with a team that as dead last, no matter how many goals.
I think the Nix will be ok with out him.

Why not?? Drogba didn't have the best debut season for Chelsea but bagged 30 odd goals the next, not saying kwasy will hit the heights Drogba did.

My point being Kwasnik had a decent record for the mariners and we shouldn't right him off.............. just yet

I remember he hit the crossbar either against the tards or the roar in the opening rounds, maybe if that had gone in things might have been different....

We would like to keep this forum from descending to the depths of the fan forums of other clubs, which means encouraging people to have intelligent conversation, based on facts. Not bandying about baseless theories (except in the transfer speculation thread).

I'm interested to see how Smeltzy (and Porter) copes with the heat.  Living in Welly and England isn't the greatest preparation 2ndBest2008-12-05 08:55:37

It's not that bad... and Smeltz grew up there (not sure about Porter)... the heat there isn't too bad, and they'll have a fair few (winter) months to get used to it

Going to Towny would be a bit tougher!!!

oh thats right I forgot they dont sign players over 27 in Europe

Yip WAY too old for Europe - Chelsea sure did screw up buying Anelka at 29!! no way he's gonna score any goals.
And just announcement that Real Madrid have bought Huntelaar - 25 year old who they think is still young. Football players must age a heck load in those two short years.
Yes but the point is that smeltz is unproven in europe while anelka and huntelaar are. He'd be too old is certainly a valid point.
