I guess this is not a good time to mention that it took me several years of living here to even begin to be able to distinguish an Aussie accent from a NZ accent. Even now, it's really only the Robbie Slater/Troy Corser accents that make it easy.

Hands up the Kiwis that get asked what part of Australia they're from when overseas... probably about the same as Canadians getting asked where in the US they're from.

Helpful himt - just listen to Autralian females talking, you can pick up the accent details a lot easier and quicker. Some are really gorgious until they speak!

My wife's an Aussie, but she's pretty decent for all that, especially as she supports the Phoenix.
Well, almost. Mostly she just sits there laughing her head off at me while I yell at the TV in some pub here in Melbourne.
She's always saying 'Why don't they give it to Daniel?' but I'm beginning to think it's only cos she wants to see him close up....

Hell yeah! What a bitch finally having a pro Wellington team to support and only getting to see them once a season. Unless they get some sort of home semifinal/final that is, in which case it's off to Welly for a short 'holiday'.

When I lived in the UK - brief though it was... Was always taken as an Aussie (before I'd lived here of course)...

The most effective course of action was to ask the offender which part of Scotland/Wales/Ireland/England/Manchester/Brummie/Toon, etc they were from... simple - but effective!

Hmmm! Yeah, I've been asked a few times which part of England I'm from

Some dipstick from the USA once went a stage further by asking me, in all seriousness, whereabouts in England Scotland was

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

pmsl!!!

I had an Irishman on St Paddy's day 2001 (so I forgave him) asking me how long it takes to drive from Wellington to Sydney.

I told him the tunnel was due for completion in 2004.

He walked away happy (tho that may have been the 17 pints of Guinness).

There is a NZ play called The Daylight Athiest, in which an Irishman talks about his life in NZ over the last 40-odd years. He talks about when he was first coming to NZ, his friends in Ireland asked him about "the bridge." He establishes that they think the Sydney Harbour Bridge links Australia and NZ. When he tells them that NZ and Australia are about 3000 miles apart (or whatever it is), their response was, "sh*t. The bridge doesn't look that big in the picture!"

Seriously, most people in Europe (myself included originally) think of NZ-AUS as a ferry ride like Newhaven-Dieppe or Dover-Calais. I only realised how far apart they were when I got here. It's because when you look at a map, there is only water between the two countries and in Europe the body of water is smaller.

Yes I am, but I thought this was very funny. It's good to be able to laugh at yourself from time to time, don't you reckon?

I was staggered when I first arrived in Oz and discovered that THEY thought WE spoke funny!

On Total Football (Oz) last night... he almost accidentally complemented the Nix, but Andy Harper had to pick up the loose ball and drill it into the top corner past the keepers outstreched hand...

I nearly had to eat my hat.

Slater is anti all but Sydney. Although it is probably accentuated with Wellington by his references to you lot as New Zealand and his anti NZ involvement in A-league stance.

He shamelessly insinuates Sydney support all the bloody time. At least thats the way I see it. However I don't care to watch his drivvle so I don't.

As for the NZ accent, only the ones who have been here, or I suppose, anywhere else overseas, for a number of years seem to pick up on the very noticeable 'u' sound :p

My mate is in Sydney and listened in for some football radio show today and then phoned me.  I quote...

RS "Blah blah blah..."

Show host "Robbie you are a kiwi hate!"

RS "..." - notice he does not deny it

RS "I do have Kiwi mates I just don't remember their names"

"... and I have the worst accent ever"

Yeah he was at it again on Total Football
He would not recognise that Wellington Phoenix played well.
Simon Hill put it to him that he doesn't like Kiwis Slater gave that smart ass answer which was posted by lovinit.
He also went on to say that the team should be based in australia not NZ because it should be for Aussies.
Simon Hill again poined out to Slater there are at lest  six aussies playing for  Wellington.
Slater didn't want to know.
