When they previewed the Wellington v Adelaide game Andy Harper was trying to get Slater to make some Anti Wellington comments. They all know he can't stand us being in the league. Hill was laughing  when Slater said he picked Adelaide only because he didn't want to pick a draw.

Having just been in Oz - I didn't hear any abuse by anyone relating to New Zealand my whole time there. Didn't hear much about rugby either - in fact I heard much more about the A League. Robbie Slater is paid to have an opinion and stir a reaction - seems to be doing his job pretty well.

Agreed.  Most Aussies are stoked we've got our act together.  Forget Kiwi Hater.

I agree,  I now live in Aust, coming from Wellington (How I wish I was there now the Nix are) and most people are really pleased for the Nix and happy they are doing well.  Slater is none to bright as he doesnt realise that it is for the good of all to have a successful NZ based team in the league.  I just hope the league expands and the season gets extended.

There will always be an element of the Australian footballing public (and NZ footballing public for that matter) that wants everything to stay in Australia.  The fact is Australia isn't big enough for the type of competition that is desired and as such NZ is needed (I'm still an advocat for Singapore, however that is another story).  Some commentators do not have the structural management understanding to grasp this concept and as such are cynical.  There will always be at least one, so let it be.  Welly's recent peformances on and off the field is rapidly thinning their ranks.

If there did come a day when there was a team from Singapore (or Papua New Guinea, I mean it's a lot closer than Singapore), I think Slater would leave us alone completely and start pestering them - he'd hate it even more if one of those countries got an a-league team.loyalgunner2007-10-05 21:30:35

We never seem to see the pre-match here but he does seem to have a go at a lot of teams in the build up to the games - we're not the only ones.

I can respect his view that NZ teams shouldn't be in the A-League. I don't agree with him, but I can see the logic of his viewpoint and concede that it is unusual in football. The only other one I can think of are the Welsh teams in the English league. In similar fashion to here, that only came about because there was no Welsh leagues at the time those clubs entered the league in the 1920s. (There is now, but it the three Welsh clubs would be too big for it now.) It would not have been a stretch for there to have been a British league, but Scotland have always been fiercely independent (good on them).

As for the game last night, I did not detect Slater letting any anti-NZ bias slip at all. In fact, he seemed quite complimentary. It was our worst game of the season - missed Daniel, missed Felipe when he went off, couldn't pass, no penetration at all - so it was a golden opportunity for him to give us a kicking.

So, just the Phoenix then

Monaco are an interesting point. They have a national team, but are one of the few countries not to have joined FIFA. Hence, they play very rarely. As a trivia question, does this mean Monaco nationals play (or are eligible to play) for France? I don't know - I'm not playing quiz-master.

Lichtenstein, play in Switzerland.  Until 1994 Singapore fielded a side in the Malaysian League until differences forced them out.

I mean, did you hear yesterday's comment when O'Dor pushed that kid right against the ads banners?? The commentators picked on that straight away, and talked about 'border line challenge' etc, but they said very little about Felipe being targeted...
They mentioned that Felipe was fouled 3 times in 1 minute, but it seemed like Dodd's challenge was way worse, whilst he only won the challenge with his shoulder - especially cause the other kid weighs 50kg and has no muscles whatsoever on his upper body...
Whereas Felipe being butchered did not raise any serious comment.

Plus, and I apologize for not being able to put this into a very understandable english, there is a subtle feeling of 'not being good enough' every time I watch a Nix game on Sky...they just talk as if there would be no Nix supporters listening, it just pisses me off.

Was it me or did we get called the "Knights" on at least 3 occassions and the biggest surprise, it was NOT Robbie Slater who did it. I could believe my ears when I heard it. Lonegunmen2007-10-08 18:01:34

I wouldn't be terribly surprised as it is largely laziness on the media's behalf.  Adelaide are constantly called "City" even though United replaced City whilst the NSL was still in operation.  Hence it is a lack of professionalism in the media that is the problem.

I think Robbie Slater just sums up the Australian mentality.....plain biased & racist....nothing ever lives up to there standards .....And Robbie if you are reading this give Messiah a shout out on total football tomorrow night...if we beat Australia Jets on the weekend maybe you can wear a yellow fever shirt on the next show

I think Robbie Slater is hard on all the teams, not just the Phoenix.  He's an ex-pro from the Premier League and thinks he knows it all and the plebs in Australasia need the benefit of his great wisdom.  Maybe he's right?  Some of his comments are pretty sharp (especially when he talks about where the constantly misfiring A-league strikers should have aimed their shots for maximum chance of scoring) but I find some of his comments on "body positioning" a little odd.  Wonder how popular he was in the showers?

I am sure Robbie Hater new all the moves with body positioning especially when he dropped the soap on purpose

He is definately harder on the Phoenix & previous NZ teams than any of the Aussie teams for sure.....shame really, I know he is in his role for the controversy aspect....but you can have controversial & just plain biased & unwilling to praise a team when praise is deserved.

I have nothing against him until he opens that big mouth of his......anyone care to send him a roll of duct tape

When we were kids we used to mine slater* holes with double happy or tom thumb firecrackers and blow the nasty things to smithereens.  Perhaps, unbeknownest to us, we were in training for our life's work.  Bring me the Robbie...

maybe I can get a quote from a pest controller to exterminate a rodent problem which we have in Aussie at the moment......I think if he put a fever shirt on he would start to disintergrate

The A-League would benefit from making sure its commentators are up to scratch. At least Slater has the technical knowledge to talk sense - like a lot of the English Premier League commentators.  That itself is worthy of some respect.  Contrast that with the Tommy Smyth with a Y stupidity.  I'm not so sure about Andy Harper either, who reminds me of Smyth constantly with the opinionated crap he comes out with. Like Smyth, perhaps he just likes to hear his own voice and fill us with his self-importance. I don't care for it personally.

hey mate...are you sure....it must have been in the 38 mins which was not shown over here...we had a delayed telecast because of a live baseball game from the states...... I thought they would have shown the game from the start but they just showed it from then on in

I have a confession to make...I sent total football an email in regards to why Robbie is anti kiwi/NZ through the total football site in OZ....I wonder if they will mention it on this weeks show? I asked RObbie to show his cousins across the ditch some love....... yeah right like he will d that

I thought Slater did the CCM game. Wasn't Harper the one who said it in between talking about how much he is in love with Joel Griffith.

It wasnt Slater, as he didnt do that game. Harper and someone else, cant get his name just now, did the honours and were quite praising of Wellington early on

It was Harper. Talked about the good job that we'd done getting the organisation sorted and getting a comptetitive team on the park. Mentioned the support from the people of Wellington, talked about Terry and Ricki. Very positive stuff, almost fell off my chair when I heard it.

Thing that's pissed me off the most this season is the continual wankfest in the commentary box over Archie Thompson every time that Melbourne play.

Your absolutley right. If Archie Thompson was as good as they think he is, what the hell is he still doing in the A-league, why isnt he off keeping his buddy Kewel company in the UK.

My mistake, must have been Harper not Slater.

I just figured as he had a filthy Aussie accent that he was the infamous Robbie Slater.
