I think what makes it even more disappointing is it's a loan, not an actual signing 😅 Hopefully with an option to buy but man, that's anticlimactic.

Could've got an experienced local, instead we get this guy who is only a few months older than Sutton.

Well that's McGarry's replacement sorted, and cover for Sutts too. A little underwhelming if I'm being honest, as I'm sure there are locals who could've fulfilled the role. Nevertheless, welcome to Wellington Lucas 👏

Let's hope this doesn't turn out to be another Prso or Bozinovski type signing.

You can’t tell me there isn’t a New Zealander playing locally that wouldn’t at least be as good. Even if they’d have been given a trial, there’d probably be told nah while some Bozinovski II gets signed sight unseen. There’s literally only one pro team for an entire country there shouldn’t be any need to sign any Australians, let alone loan players.

A decent signing. Adds depth in an area we are short of players. Has some experience in the league so Uffie must be confident he can step in and do a job if required. I don't know what local players are available that could be up to this level.

Lmao, the only reason this is viewed as "disappointing" is because this forum went mental over the last 48 hours and decided we are signing Rojas, Krishna AND a German who's never heard of us.

All going well, Sutton will play 25+ games at left back next season, we just need someone to sit on the bench, start a handful of matches and make a few sub cameos. Mauragis does that.

Uffie and the team would have had a look at the local leagues, but decided that signing a 21 year old with 23 A-League appearances to his name was a better fit than whatever else was available.

According to transfermarkt, his contract expires in June 2023, so will be a free agent and can be signed longer if the club and player wants.

EDIT: Ahh , just seen the Jets signed him for 2 more seasons at the same time as loaning him to us for 22-23. Still...

Chillllllllllll.

Yeah disappointing they didn't pick a Kiwi for LB cover. But who. Jack-Henry Sinclair (was in Piney's latest top 50 Kiwi player list) seems to be constantly overlooked.

Hopefully Mauragis turns out to be a good find, likes Welly, and it becomes a permanent move at season end. I can definitely see Sutton going to Europe end of this season or the one after, and so would be nice to develop some sort of succession plan.

Someone mentioned Adam Supyk at the Weenix as a promising LB to watch. Laws can also slip over there as cover in need.

Cover yes, but developing a fellow A-league teams player, no thanks. Especially since we've no chance of signing him permanently without a fee.

May not be what we all expected but decent cover to push Sutton and there will be bigger signings to come still. If he plays well I'm sure no one will be complaining

The more I think about it, the more I like this move. Sure it's not what we were all anticipating or expecting but it is what it is.

Bugger all cost for us.
Provides cover for Sutts down the left, which was needed as it is. Essentially just a younger,  Aussie, James McGarry.

What did annoy me about this however is the Jets announcing his extension with them at pretty much the same time. Should have been coordinated in a much better way between the two clubs in my opinion.

Caira, Scott, Brindell-South, Doyle, Galloway, Tratt, Tsatts, Danaskos, Gulley…plus others. We’ve had a lot of players try and not make the grade one way or the other at LB.
Brindell-South is making a come back and Tratt has had a few contracts, but moved centrally and been released a fair bit too.

A challenge to rise above.

To be fair I think there was Biss and Rowe and maybe some other locals who didn’t make the grade too as well as the others mentioned. LB just seems to be a tough position to make the jump in.

You probably see Elliot or Payne switch to LB before Laws plays there.

Maybe we’re planning to give the Jets the bird and leave him at the training ground? As pay back for Piscopo, McGarry and Sotirio? Does seem that they have got some ins to our camp. It’s a weird one, but hey. LB cover. FFA cup fodder. Better than Fenton?

Really hope this is not the only signing announced before our first Australia Cup game.
This is our 18th player signed up for the upcoming season unless I'm mistaken, I wouldn't be too worried if our new imports don't come in by then. we have a really solid squad already with enough a league quality depth. Previous times for the cup we've had like 13 first team players and have had to bring over kids, so we're in a good place. Even if the imports were announced a week or two before that first game I doubt they would play it anyway.

We’ve come a long way from my personal forum high point when Cosimo or Cosmo wrote a version of the William Carlos Williams poem ‘This is just to say’ to talk about beers left in the Fever Zone.
Or any of Oi Oi’s player ratings! Those were some gold quality reliable statistics…
My personal favourite was the saga with that fake player we were supposedly linked to. I can't remember his name but I'm pretty sure he had uploaded highlight videos of some random african player and pretended it was him.
My favourite was when Pavlovic went for "medical reasons" then turned up on here calling Herbert a fat fudge, a cod, and saying he knew shark about football because he thought Fenton was better than Rojas.
That wasn't really Pav though, was it?
Anyway, today we're signing either Krishna, Rojas, Lasogga, or Sery Elie de Campos
it was, the mods were pretty sure of it at the time. at least they said so at the pub.

Well they did get Piscopo and Sotirio, so however we use this Mauragis fella, the Jets are still well ahead on the ledger I'm afraid.

Speaking of Fenton, who have we got lined up to fill his shoes? Possibly just re-arranging and having Payne at RB with Elliot as backup and leaving Laws, Wootton and Surman in the middle?

Re a Fenton replacement, who knows. Who predicted this kid Mauragis signing. Kelvin Kalua has been one name mentioned. Hay certainly thinks he's deserving of the ALM. Noel Billingsley has become a mystery man, but apparently is back from the US in Welly?

However maybe the Nix will plug for specialist CB cover, if they see Payne now primarily as a RB. Be interesting to see if any Trialists get spotted next week

Yeah I think Payne + Elliot backup is the most likely outcome. Would personally love to see us pick up Kalua (covers whole backline) or Jack-Henry Sinclair (covers RB, RW and the left side at a push) but not convinced it’ll happen.

I'd ideally want us to sign an Import RB tbh if we're gonna use the other two spots on a 10 and a 9. Move Payne back to the middle feel like it's his better position and if we can sign a quality import attacking RB it'll add a lot to our attack, having two quality outlets from both fullback positions.

Also, it seems from looking at what Newcastle fans are saying that they're annoyed about moving him on loan and he can also play LM so could be potentially cover for those wide attacking roles. So maybe less underwhelming signing than people think.

Elliot left to Europe with momentum, but hasn’t had much impact this last season despite the opportunities. Big season for him. Get back to Ifill and get some swagger re-injected!

He’d be first cover at the moment you’d think. But there’d be competition.

Jets replacing Western and MacArthur as the we don’t have a team, so we’ll steal theirs club…

I think what annoys me is we are developing their player for them. I'm fine with loans, with an option to buy. But he's just signed an extension so all we're doing is helping them in the long run. I've no idea about his ability, so trust Uffie on it, but I am not a fan of this type of signing.

Yeah still think Elliot could match Sutton on the left. Was shining before he went to Greece. Not sure what happened last season. Remember Talay had a dig at the young players at one stage and almost seemed was targeted alot at Elliot.

Anyway yes a big season for him.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching the A-League for all these years, it's that contracts here aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

If Mauragis likes it here and we like him, I can't see the remaining year on his Newy deal stopping him from making a permanent switch.

Plus with Sutton looking like he'll be snapped up before too long, he's a pretty good chance of nailing down the LB spot long-term (if he performs, of course)

So we lose three useful players to the Jets for nothing and sign one of their young players to develop on their behalf because they can't be fudgeed? Whats the point LOL

Have we been transfer market cucked by the fudgeing Newcastle Jets of all fudgeing teams!?
