I would like Krishna to be back with us like we all would.

We do not though have a good history of people coming back and being anything like as good as they were first time round.  Gary Hooper last season is a case in point.  Nathan Burns is another example.

I just hope we have not got collective rose tinted glasses

Yeah I agree. Happy for him to come back - but he shouldn't be our main striker. It's great he doesn't count as an import though for us.

I would like to see Ball score more goals. Ball gives it his all to help us succeed, he is incredibly unselfish, strong, great at holding on to the ball for us, and in my opinion should be the captain rather than Rufer. However since dropping to a winger or a deep playing striker, he has barely scored as much as he did in his first two seasons with us.

I guess what I am trying to say is Ball should stay in the striker position. If JHS is signed we could leave Payne or Elliot at right-back and put him up with Old if Barbarouses fails to impress in his first games for us instead of having Ball drop down.

Goal scoring was definitely an issue last year. Not just for Ball. We only scored 34 goals compared to 44 goals the season before.
And then we conceded 47 goals compared to 34 the year before.
Its crazy really that we made the top six last season but not the year before.

It was that whole “100% loss rate when conceding first” thing last season. Lots of 1-0ish wins, but lots of 4/5-0 losses too

This new rule might make it more inviting for other A league clubs to sign Krishna,

(The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) have fast-tracked a second ‘designated player’ slot into the salary cap for the 2022-23 Isuzu UTE A-League season, granting clubs the ability to both lure and retain more top-shelf talent to the ALM.
It means clubs can bring in an additional player on up to $600,000 – or shift an existing player into that position to free up a marquee player spot)

I mean what's the point of even having a salary cap with rules like these. All they really need is a salary floor.

Does anyone know if there are other A-League clubs interested in Krishna? WSW was obviously one but they are apparently about to sign a Portuguese striker.

Is anyone expecting to see much of Rufer next season? Thought he was pretty much out?
Signing Krishna is weird for me, UT has preferred Target men to date which makes me wonder if a move to a more mobile attack is on the cards or if he still gets his big striker and has Roy buzzing around.

Definitely makes guys like Krishna more appealing to any Aussie club, and there may just be that little bit more on the table that could possibly take him across the ditch.

Seems a little bit suspect though that in a league where only maybe the Victory and possibly Sydney FC make any profit, that they'd open up a spot for someone to come in on over half a million a year... Especially after the past few seasons with Covid going on and what not. Doesn't seem to me to be that financially prudent, and I wouldn't be surprised if these extra player designation spots remain unfilled.

Krishna will be a visa for other A-League clubs, I don't think it will make him any more appealing. Only thing he has over a similarly priced & much younger visa, is that he knows the league.

this will have been specifically brought in to allow Victory to sign Nani without requiring them to dump or bring one of the other "marquees" under the cap.

the league has a fund to help bring in those players. Any team can apply for it.

Interesting to see lots of lineups with Payne ahead of Laws at CB. I rate Laws, he's been very good the past couple of seasons.

CR-7 is currently looking for a new club after being offered a new contract "below his expectations". He has a personal fortune estimated to be around 500 million pounds .Was on $900k NZD per week, he was offered "only" $700k NZD per week. Not bad for a 37 year old. The Nix could offer him 150k $NZD per "Year" / season maybe?

Laws was the starter ahead of Payne iirc. If we sign Krishna, it feels like we’ve got a midfield and probably a defense, but may get one or two more signings playing further forward? We have to replace Hooper/Piscopo/Sotirio/ Sandoval(?) and possibly even add another goal scorer, as we didn’t score enough last season,  to be aiming for a title.

I am actually not quite sure whether Payne is better at centre back than he is at right back. Apart from that mistake Laws made in a game against the Mariners last season, I agree he has been pretty solid. If he is still struggling with that injury though, I say we rest him for the Australia Cup and give Surman some more game time with Wootton.

If we talk about nailed on starters/incumbents:
                     Sail
Payne Wooton Laws Sutton
         Ugarkovic Lewis
      Ball

I’d argue that Kosta/Roy/Old/ Waine/OVH can’t claim to be nailed on starters. Kosta was in and out for Sydney. Krishna, if he joins us, is coming back from a different league. Both need to prove their dominance.

Waine and Old similarly were in and out for the Nix, though both look very promising. Old particularly I’d argue was the player that, in combination with David Ball, troubled Western United most out of the league in their run to being champions. Waine has scored regularly and will be looking to up that strike rate.

I reckon we’ll be looking to sign Krishna and at least two more players before the start of the season. We don’t think one will be Gael?

If Talay and Gill are trying to resign Sandoval, that would mean it would be the first time we have had someone leave at the end of the season and rejoin the following season.

Come to think of it, that is probably pretty rare for any team.

Technically Rufer did that ahead of the 18/19 season. He wasn’t re-signed after his contract ran out the season before, so he left and went as far as trialling in Switzerland, where he was born. That didn’t work out, so he came back and had to trial again at the Phoenix, doing enough to manage to convince Rudan to give him a contract, and here he still is now.

If we re-sign Sandaval. Would be happy with that.
He was on loan last year and still had a year on his contract with Chivas but has recently been released.

Think we can do better than Sandoval. Started the season ok but went missing by the end. His defense is almost non existent and lost the ball too much. I doubt Talay would release him and sign him back

He played at DM for half the season so must have made a few tackles?.
But I think your spot on, that in Talays system our No 10's need to be able to defend out wide when required. Something Ball and Old do well, but the likes of Piscopo and Davilla where not so good at.
And that's the risk I think with signing a well known but ageing import for that no. 10 spot. At least Sandaval is still only mid 20's and isn't injury prone.

They released him a couple of weeks ago, at least according to the google translate. He played a few pre-season games (and did well apparently, scoring a goal and setting up others) and asked if he would feature in the first team but the board said they'd rather invest in a youngster as a fringe player and voted to release him early.

Talay didn't release him, his loan came to an end. I think he's a good player and seems like a nice guy, he's worth a foreign slot in the  A-League, but is he worth it for us when we have other wide forwards?

If we sign Krishna I would still like us to target import st and am and then sign JHS to round out the squad he would be playing rb but just put him at cb to show all the names. And then maybe sign another import in Jan if there's a position we need strengthening due to injuries or other reasons. *also the second lewis should be rufer oops*

If we can sign Krishna, I think this is getting close. Though Uffie has sprung pleasant transfer surprises on us before.
Kosta can cover anywhere across the front 4 imo. Laws and Sutton cover CM. Payne also covers CB.
I’m wondering if we will see a different formation used at times if we do end up with this personnel.

Feel Uffie must have something up his sleeve. Has every season so far. Even last season Wootton and Sandoval changed our season and Uffie also had position and formation switches to hold it all together when things got crazy. Davila and Hemed were best in the league type signings. Ball has just been endless running and vision and an absolute warrior.

Anyone got any suggestions on who might come in up front?

As well what are the chances of a midfield/defense utility signing who might push the starting players in a number of positions and provide quality cover? Maybe not the most recent example, but John O’Shea played CM and across the defense for United iirc. Unlikely, but trying to think what we need to win the league. A twenty goal striker and a ten goal mid would be handy of course! There was this guy who played for Hamburg back in the day who was handy. Can’t think of his name…

I hope Uffie is looking at Jason Berthomier. His contract has expired with Clermont and is coming off his first season in Ligue 1 where he got 6 goal involvements for a team that just survived relegation.  Looks like a great Uli replacement.
