Do all marquees get APL funding or just select players? If it’s all of them then surely Winston qualifies, I mean even Chris Ikonomidis is a damn marquee apparently.
just select players. they have to be big names which can bring crowds, and positive press which is why they tend to be attacking players from big teams.
Would Reid be commanding that big of a wage though? He's 34, hasn't been with a club in a year, and had loads of injury issues can't seem too many clubs being that interested in him if he was still holding out for big wages. Maybe we'll offer a pay as you play deal + a job lined up after football. Maybe that's just me being hopeful but I'm sure money isn't an issue for him anymore and it'll more come down to where he wants to settle and do post-football.
This. The assumption that it would take crazy money to sign him on seems a bit odd, he's been a free agent for an eternity in footballers terms. It pretty much comes down to if he wants to play, I'm sure he could have chased a quick paycheck in asia/middle east if money were his primary objective
Reid will come if he wants to up the profile of football in NZ. He’s the AW captain, we’ve missed the WC and this may be the next best thing. Admittedly think it might be a tricky fit with Uffie’s style, but could be done. There’s no such thing as a guest spot anymore right? Sutton, Wooton, Laws, Payne seems somewhat settled, but perhaps Winnie has a left foot? Unlikely he’d sign for the Nix but the profile from it would be immense. It’d be up to the football side to make it work.
Has Reid ever said he wouldnt mind moving back to New Zealand think its bloody ages since he lived here. As much as i would love him to sign for us not convinced its the best move for the Phoenix. Also dont think the good for NZ Football argument can be used when it comes to the Phoenix.
Also if APL doesn’t give us money for Winston Wiremu Reid, but does for Nani and Charlie Austin…well then it’s just a scam. Wood aside, there’s no bigger name and draw card in NZ football, especially with the general public and the eurosnobs. Well Roy Krishna would be great too, but from his time here Ufuk Talay would have to be in the top 5 too! Hope by the end of the season Kosta is a much bigger draw card than he is now!
Just from eyeballs on screens and bums on seats perspective. High profile for the Nix through a title challenging season would be great for NZ football.
Imagine all this chatter about Winston, and then we go ahead and sign an Aussie on a one year deal. 😅
I think while it's accepted that he won't be earning a house deposit every week for his endeavours if he does come here, in my opinion he still commands probably one of the higher wages in the league.
There is a good list for both pro's and con's for signing on down here - I think he'll 100% get extra bums on seats, (I'm saying that as a former CB!) he still has a fantastic profile that will bring attention to the league in general too.
Then there's the fact that if he can get match fit and stay healthy, then it's a win/win for NZ Football with the AW's and their matches against Aussie later on this year. Not to mention the youngsters who were growing up watching this guy earn his stripes in the Premier League - immediate benefactors probably include a young Finn Surman, but there will be others too.
Yes injury concerns and being apart of the dreaded Unattached FC for a year might raise some eye brows, but a contract offer commensurate to other high level A-League signings isn't entirely out of the question (even if, like suggested its on a pay as you play type deal).
Whichever way it does go, at the end of the day, at least we're having this conversation on a relatively serious level. Who would've thought we'd see this day? What a time to be alive!
Did Austin get money from the APL marquee fund? I thought it was just Nani and Fabregas (though that fell through). Austin might be on marquee wages, but all paid by the Roar. I don’t think Reid would have the same effect as those two, mainly because central defenders aren’t ‘exciting’. Also worth considering Reid hasn’t played in the Premier League for four and a half years, which is a lot longer out of it than Taylor when he came down. If Taylor or Hooper weren’t big enough for the marquee fund, then Reid won’t be either.
Even if they're not fully 'A-League immeresed' I would wager a lot of expatriate West Ham fans (of which there are a surprisingly high amount!) across New Zealand and Aussie would at the very least, come on down and see him play.
Whilst you also don't often earn the title of 'exciting' as a CB, you also don't tend to amass over 150 appearances in the Premier League if you don't have some quality about you.
He'd be every bit the Marquee/DP as any of the others listed in this thread, maybe even a little bit more so.

Must admit I am coming around to the idea, if he was not too expensive. Not taking away funds for visa striker (definite must) and 2nd visa AM (would be really nice too have). That's the key.
But his signing would be a massive boost for the profile of the Nix & NZ football as a whole. Having one of our genuine football greats, finish his career in Welly. Something that hasn't really happened with the Nix, luring big name NZ footballers back for a season or two to finish up. Unsuccessful Simon Elliott short stint aside. Though yes to be fair is pretty small sample size of overseas AWs, who would have fitted that profile. Nelsen, Falloon, Killen (before his criminal conviction), Vicelich spring to mind
But alot of big name Soceroos have finished their careers in the ALM. Certainly a large number of that very good 2006 WC team they had.
One thing that might help, is apart from West Ham winning the EPL promotion final at Wembley, early in Winnie's career - he's never really won anything in football? I'm sure the Nix guys in the AWs would have told him, that they have a top quality coach in Uffie, and a real shot in winning the ALM, with a normal H&A season.
But really all we are all going off, is some 2nd hand rumour that Mrs Reid was spotted house hunting in Welly. Nice to speculate.
How is Liam Wood going for Miramar Rangers? He is still young, looked very promising in his FFA Cup match a few seasons ago (left the Academy cuz of DK iirc?) and most importantly is Wellington based. A pro deal to be the 4th CB in the squad would be an easier sell to him.
Had quite a few announced in the past before they have arrived including Wootton, so is possible we could hear this week
Maybe that was more with the team based in Aus. With no NZ media present etc, zero promotional value really in having a media conference over there showcasing a shiny new signing.
You guys want another Instagram rumour? 25 y/o Brazilian attacking midfielder Yan Sasse has just started following us on Insta. Great pedigree, 50 games in Brazil's Serie A and another 18 in the Turkish Super Lig on loan with Rizespor (Boyd's old club). Currently a free agent.

Has played mainly in Basil first tier, which has got to be a pretty high level and very competitive. Looks like he has struggled for consistent game time. So another player looking to re-ignite their career. But is young and a left footed midfielder. So fit in well. I like these younger imports, with something to prove. Better than an ageing Euro coming down under for a comfy end to there career. Maybe a bit more of a gamble by Uffie, but he comes up trumps more often then not with his import signings.
This has no basis in rumour or anything, but sticks with the theme of young players with something to prove.
25 year old Hungarian striker Márk Koszta is a free agent after getting released by Ulsan Hyundai. He never actually played in the K-League and has been replaced by a better, more expensive Hungarian in Martin Ádám. He did manage two goals in 172 AFC Champions League minutes though and has a very respectable 0.62 G+A per 90 rate in the Hungarian top tier (almost exactly the same G+A rate as the Jets’ Beka Mikeltadze had in the Georgian top tier).
Could be a bit of an inspired signing in the Berisha/Mikeltadze mould, but again this is just baseless speculation at this point.
