Any rumors about the CB signing? I'm also kinda surprised there haven't been any rumors about releasing Sasse and getting someone else in as it seems a lot of the A-League clubs have been releasing their imports this window. He's only played around 60 mins the last 4 games and I don't see him starting soon. Although it does seem the team like him and I guess he hasn't had a lot of minutes to prove he's not worth keeping but I do wonder come to the end of the season if he doesn't come good it'd be a wasted opportunity not moving him on this window.
Sasse strikes me as someone that needs time & will explode in his second season, if he gets one. I don't think Uffie has lost faith in him, he still makes the bench each week.
Left fullbacks of quality are rare as hens' teeth, so we are still relatively exposed there without a good backup (or competition) to Sutton, with Mauragis going back to the Jets.
Personally I prefer Sutton but Mauragis has been excellent. It is rather nice having two quality options in the LB role.
I wonder when there may be injuries and suspensions that'll cause us to rotate the front 4 if Uffie would push Mauragis into the front 4 he has the athleticism and has played as winger before and then you still have a quality LB with Sutton.
Are we signing another defender/CB. Talk of this seems to have gone quiet
Uffie wants to, but only if he can get the right person. Said he’d just use the academy if all he needed was a body. Should see something in the next two weeks or so I believe if we managed to get the “right player”.

Fullbacks altogether seem to be in that category - hence why more A-League teams seem to be using visa spots there (Cadete, Caballo, Javi Lopez, Jenkinson, Imai before he turned into a CB).
Thankfully not a situation we are in at the moment that we need to do that. Right back depth could be better but Elliot has really stepped up this season.
Don't think we are going to replace Waine but looking around the league, I reckon Ivanovic at Perth would be available if we were to ask. Came thru Sydney's NYL team under Uffie and knows the 4-2-2-2.

If they do bring in a new CB, it could be a young (likely Aussie fringe ALM) player who's at about a similar age and/or experience level as Surman.
I see Talay was quoted today as they bought in Mauragis on loan, about similar age as Sutton. Not an older player so Sutts felt like he would never play. Two young guys going hard at training for the starting spot. Same when Talay arrived at the Nix and he bought in Walter Scott to compete with a young Libby.
If they bring in an older CB (like a Nikko Boxall, that a few of us have pushed for) - a frustrated Surman could just feel he is well down the list - behind Payne, Wootton, Laws & new CB. And maybe not great for Surman's state of mind, after playing alot last season.
Does anyone feel Mauragis might not want to go back? He’s in good form but there’s no guarantee of playing if he returns to Jets. Maybe he will push for a transfer to a team where he is wanted

Only young CB around the AL I can think that might be tempted by a loan would be Kerrin Stokes at City.
Another option would be a young Aussie in an overseas academy who won't be getting re-signed next season.

he might no want to go back, but he is contracted to the jets until 2024 so what they say goes.

Tbf the A-League always seem pretty good with letting players go under contract like Jets let Elsey go to glory mid-season and they're not really stacked at CB too.
very true, it's something that would need to be negotiated though. Jets have McGarry as LB and he seems ot be doing ok, not sure who else they have to back up that spot for next season. I'd be happy if Mauragis wanted to stay but it might see Sutton moving on.
Agree with the notion of a negotiation, having in mind what everyone wants. If Jets do not want to release him, but he is happy to stay and get good game time, and improve, then there might be an extension of a loan, and all other things stay the same. But that depends on a lot of variables so a long shot at best.
Unfortunately I’d say on performances so far at LB Mauragis has been better in our formation than McGarry. McGarry can play quite directly and has a rocket of a shot, but hasn’t found a position or a moment to capitalize on these attributes imo.
On the other hand McGarry had quite a few good games and was tested in defense a lot more than Mauragis has been to this point. Perth certainly got some change out of attacking his wing in the last game for instance.
It’s the second album/year that sticks. We’ve seen a lot of good FBs either burn out or be found out by relentless pressure. It’s hard to recall an A league FB outside Jamo and of course, Libby, who has been consistent or dominant over a long period of time.
I wonder if we can't find a CB who's available that'd be good enough to be an improvement on Laws and Payne that there wouldn't be much point signing a young one with Surman. Maybe we'd be better off signing a striker because outside of Zawada and Ball we don't have any other natural strikers maybe OVH but he kinda seems more like a Kosta type of player.
Or signing a midfielder and having Rufer as another one to cover CB. The only decent Australian free agent I could find was Ryan Edwards just came out of contract from K-League 2 in Jan having played 34 times and getting 4 assists so he'd be match fit. https://www.transfermarkt.com/ryan-edwards/profil/spieler/192360

I hope that Newcastle doesn't end up being the place where promising kiwis go to have their careers die. They hired Ridenton and apart from an injury replacement stint and a fringe role his career died there.

Cassio, Elrich, Traore, Grant...
Libby was too good to stick around for a long period of time.

Since when did players or clubs honour an A League contract? They're not worth the paper they are printed on.
Sounds like the club are after a local NZ player. Uffie talked about it in his interview today - said we will know more about whether we will get anyone after the Victory game.

I think he amended that to a Kiwi or Australian player.
