we seem to constantly lose players to other clubs - in a salary capped league (I know there are some ways around this).
So most of these guys aren't moving JUST for money. They are moving for a winning culture and a chance of cups, asian football etc.
It gets my head bitten off for saying this, but there's also moving to go to a warmer city with better shopping and nightlife. Not EVERYTHING is down to "Nix culture"
Functioning pipes.
But yeah certainly to live in say QLD & WA between now and October, is the ying to the yang of the unpleasantly hot months of Nov-Feb.
Nah, this stuff is often written by club press guys. Pretty standard stuff. And while Perth are doing things, if trophies not the extra sack of cash were the determining factor, you’d be trying to get to a club like any that Kosta will be going to.

And 9 years of service to the Nix. Man is a club legend who talked about the possibility of returning in his exit interview, something Gilly repeated. Awkward facts them. The Nix are bigger than one coach. Yet no one’s blaming Sutt’s for not winning every thing right? If only he’d pulled a goal out of his…instead of Traore…
I can write a long post about a souless moneyball merchant banking club that has failed to deliver passion, excitement and entertainment on the field and that has got lopsided with its youth development strategy.
But I appreciate every cent and every minute that Welnix have put into the club.
I can hope that we just rather got a fair bit overweight and ahead of ourselves with the youth dev in the first team squad and that combined with injuries and illness caught us out. Bigly.
The main thing now, I think the general mood tells us, will be convincing new signings that the last season was a learning experience and a low, and that we do have the ambition and ability to put a top team and staff together.
We may need a few very good signings stepping up together holding hands and looking each other in the eye. And a coach and admin and a budget doing some hard talking to make that happen.
We'll see. It looks pretty low now but you rise from the bottom.

That is true about nightlife and shopping.
Chico wanted to stay here so we'd have to ask him what he liked about the place. Not forgetting Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre are still here almost 15 years later.
There are always players who will want a change of pace and scenery, Welnix just need to open the cheque book a bit more. Doloras

Wooton, Kosta, Rojas/Chico and Sutton player budget should be four new starters and a fair bit of money to spend on them.
4 out of 11 new starters is, sure, a high-ish hurdle given the quality we need to replace. But it is also a bunch of fresh players and new enthusiasm. Plus some fresh coaching voices.
Someone with better final product than Sutton. Someone who can play more out of the back and score more from corners than Wooton (I'm still fond of the occasional Durante rampage forward). A Chico/Rojas replacement that actually plays for us. And someone of the quality you can get with Kostas' budget.
And a bunch of kids that have a year under their belt and who hopefully aren't hampered by injuries the way many of the young potential starters or subs were this season.
Fingers crossed it's not as bad as everybody feels right now

Nah, it's obviously just we don't have the same winning culture as Perth, who have successfully won 3 of the last 5 wooden spoons.
Wooton, Kosta, Rojas/Chico and Sutton player budget should be four new starters and a fair bit of money to spend on them.

Well I'm thinking wooden spoon at the moment. I agree the kids will be much better this season but it's not enough. Lackluster signings will give us the wooden spoon this time around - we can't have more failures like our goalie and the two Japanese players.
If we can't get rid of our imports and we only have 2 spots to work with then we need Davila level quality signings for both those spots. Plus a good group of kiwis to boot
Well, I might be going out on a limb here, but Kosta moving on may be a blessing in disguise. I am fully supportive of Kosta doing what is best for Kosta, and we can't complain with the amazing service he provided over the past two years. But that's not the reason, who knows what the future will bring for Kosta (he is capable of bad years). Back to the blessing notion. It absolutely exposes the need that we need a complete reset (I am guarded that Chiefy can deliver that, but hey). No hiding behind "we've still got our key scorer". So complete change is required (well, almost, which may come back to haunt us).
We have created the ashes that the Phoenix can rise out of!

How is Italiano going to play his trademark ultra defensive, counter-attacking, football without Kosta up front?
How is Italiano going to play his trademark ultra defensive, counter-attacking, football without Kosta up front?
Kinda consistent with my point. He's gonna have to re-think what works best, and has the freedom to do so. Whether he has capability? Hmmm, I have no idea.
[although will probably just try and find a Kosta clone, so there goes my theory]

he's definitely a fan of Italian football and managers, maybe could take a look at Simone Inzaghi more closely rather than previously stating an admiration for De Zerbi. Inzaghi definitely has a way to play out which seems so far to buck the trend last season across Europe of better tactics to counter building up from the back (and probably disseminated across clubs in the AL already). Does require tactically astute and versatile players
What really sucks about Costa leaving is he is a local icon. It was such a nice story. Local lad from Wellington Olympic ?? starts his career at the Nix. Then goes offshore to have a excellent career. Returns in his later years to supposedly see out his days at his home town club. Bangs in 25 goals in two years then approaching 36 years old he leaves. Are things that bad at the club? Is there anybody doing the director of football job because we are seeing constant screwups.
Before Kosta left, when it was official that Sutton and Wootton were leaving, Gill talked about needing to bring in a high quality CB and a high quality #10. Today in the press conference, he said "we have a good contract for a number 10, we have a good contract for a centre back and now we have a good contract for a striker", i.e. there is decent money in the budget allocated for those three positions. Do you notice that, both times, left back wasn't mentioned? I am thinking that the intention is for LKH to be the starting left back.
I hope that if we are trying to get rid of the visa players that we also try to get rid of Retre as well.

I'm kind of hoping that Loke steps into that LB role to be honest. Even though I'm aware that LKH will probably get first crack at it.
Loke has been playing at LB for the reserves, so they're probably looking for him to be at least a back up, or the next cab off the rank in that position. It seems to be the one position we regularly develop pretty easily/well going off our history.
Gill said in his interview that they had been approached by agents from a couple of AFC players. I guess one could be Moreno fishing for a deal. Who else is off contract or wants to leave?
Toomey has been released. Mata's Auckland contract finished but still has 1 year on his Shrewsbury deal. Moreno has left Auckland but we cannot afford him. Rogerson off contract but no way would he leave AFC to come here and even if he wanted to, AFC wouldn't allow it. Everyone else at Auckland is under contract for next season.
You'd have to wonder if players like Gillion or Randall might back themselves to be regular starters here and consider that that might be a better move for their career development than riding the bench a lot of the time there, and AFC might release them, you never know.

I think it's safe to say Luis Toomey has excluded himself from that list. 😆
Going off what I've been told Francis de Vries is on, I'd happily double his salary and take him. Unfortunately for us I'm pretty sure he's contracted through next season though.
Mata going back to Shrewsbury but wants to stay in NZ because Auckland aren't looking to extend a deal or another loan. Could be a good depth signing, but Shrewsbury would probably ask for some sort of nominal fee for his release.

Can I ask what you mean by 'Going off what I've been told Francis de Vries is on"?
Do you mean you have heard he is wanting to leave Auckland?
It's funny how part of getting rid of the Caceres Clause (the main reason clubs were ok with getting rid of it from my understanding) was to begin allowing transfers between clubs (therefore making the clause pretty much obsolete so might as well get rid of it) - but since the clause was gotten rid of, there has been no talk whatsoever about moving towards allowing transfers between clubs
Edit: And yeah I wonder if Toomey is now regretting mouthing off at Oluwayemi and being so openly anti Nix at the start of the season
And there lies the current problem with the club which is championed by he and Dome. Always deflecting from the real issue.
You lost your top player you fool and that day you come out with that sharke?
To draw a parallel. It is announced today that Bruno is leaving Man United. The same day the club say we have had a few Liverpool players agents approach us.
What a tool.
No wonder no one wants to stay in that toxic manipulative environment
Time for some fans on here to start calling it as it is and getting their blinkers off.
Because it is clear that players are doing so by just leaving. austin111

chill out AP. Gill was directly asked about AFC players, he answered honestly, it wasn't a cynical distraction tacticAucklandPhoenix

Alex Rufer on the Unused Subs says he still has ambitions of playing overseas, wants to have a good season next season and go to the World Cup and see what happens after that. Will be a free agent at the end of the upcoming season.

Actually you really do have to wonder about the environment at the Nix. Toxic is quite a strong word but whats happening is not a good look. Its also not a great look when kiwi players want to go elsewhere. There have been quite a turnover off support staff too. Gill admitted that three of them notified they didnt want to continue midseason. Trouble is potential quality recruits look at the last season and go no thanks, unless its big money.

You'll notice Gill also said a lot of the staff were young-ish so wanting to travel is not unexpected. Same with kiwi footbalers, if they didnt have ambitions to play outside of NZ then they probably arent that good.

Well Perth are managing to recruit a few and they are wooden spoon specialists. It's all about the coaching staff selling a narrative to any potential new recruits.
And/or finding that player like Chico who's clearly frustrated with his current club, and needs to feel by coming to the Nix they will be playing and appreciated. Those guys are out there. Chief and Gill need to find them.

🤷♂️ He’s a pro athlete with a limited career span and I believe an Aussie wife(?) who has had spells in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, where I think they all enjoyed his performances. An A league legend looking to maximize his last contract. I know the doom meter is high, but I’m happy I got to see these last two years, including a couple of goals where Marco and Kosta combined.

Surprised we didn’t see him earlier. He had the moment of Australia cup glory iirc? Loke and Supyk to have breakthrough seasons.
