The way I remember it. (correct me if I'm wrong). A few years back the club decided on a policy to prioritise bringing players through the acadamy. That way when players that became successful and were on sold the club got a bigger margin from future transfers of that player. The Nix being the original development club.
I think that Chiefy bought into this arrangement and that was a big part of his brief to becoming coach.

But i agree I think this policy has been to the detriment of the success this club has had. For various reasons.
It appears as if more A-League clubs are moving to the academy development method of recruitment.
All of them are doing that. Melbourne Victory doing the least, but the other 11, plenty of juniors now. I laugh when I see a few people comment as if it's only the Phoenix with big juniors to A League focus. I find out the entire squads, across. The Chief made a number of mistakes regardless of age of players, those would have been issues anyway.

Anyway, I'll be interested if they promote maybe Dylan Gardiner and Willem Des Tombe soon. Promote a few but not too many at the same time, they could really do with about 4 new starters now, so those substitutes should be easier to get.

Roa Conchie is probably not A League standard, not even sure he is A League bench standard as he offers little to change a game. Pretty damning that the most impact he has had at the club is saying a slur on the field 3/4 years ago.
Prepare to be disapointed went to training and he is playing a  part and looking confidant doing it. Never ceases to amaze me how quick some are to right off young players when they havnt really had much of a go,yet coaches continually give those same guys time.
Well im sure he looks like a real luka modric in training but ill reserve my judgement for the games and hope im proved wrong - although he has had plenty of game time to prove he can do something other than pass sideways

Well they must get that starter next to Alex Rufer signed very soon then.
The other 2 could take a few more months to improve.

I heard that the Napier import Cooke was trialling at the Nix. Unsure he’s quite the level we are looking for.

Was expecting a worse playing history, played a lot of games in League 2 and a little bit in League 1. Was expecting it to be more like Faulds, coming from lower divisions in smaller European countries or national league in UK.

So even though I'd hope we'd be aiming higher, if he's really impressed on trial there may be a hidden gem Grennie has discovered. I can't comment on how he's been in central league but maybe someone here that supports Napier will have a better idea.

England youth maps suggest there was a player there, but if hes a striker those numbers are poor.

Reading about him now, he isn't a striker. He is central midfield to attacking midfield. So if chosen, maybe to partner Alex Rufer while building up Roa Conchie and Anaru Cassidy to form. Still they might find someone else, but the only people I can see from here/Aus are Tyrese Francois and Jake Hollman both of which might not want the Phoenix. Need to get that Rufer helper in soon.

Someone asked about new players on a post showing the Phoenix men's team in NZCIS gym. Club page admin replied "Tomorrow maybe. 👀"
So I expect we will have a few new names this week then. ✅️

Apparently there is another Englishman coming in on trial. Seth Clarke is seemingly joining on a trial basis too - From what I've been told anyway.

Rojas' wikipedia lists him as 1 cm shorter than Krishna.

1.72m is just on the short side of the NZ national average (~1.78m). English average seems to be shorter (~1.75m).

Marco Rojas is the shortest I've found (1.68m), followed by Roy Krishna (1.69), Hideki Ishige (1.70) and Kosta Barbarouses (1.71). I'm sure I could probably find more if I went digging.

From the current squad Xuan Loke is 1.72 and Kazuki Nagasawa 1.73.

After reading about Cooke's behaviour in the Chatham Cup thread (red carded after NCR's loss in the semi, even though he scored), are we sure he passes the No Dickheads test?

Cam Devlin is 1.71 and he went pretty well for us

Has he gone too early on the social media following? 👀
Screenshot_20260817_210751_Instagram.jpg 281.08 KB

Was at Macarthur last year - I didn't watch a whole lot of them last season because Macarthur as a club don't particularly excite me. But he would seem like a decent pickup as a LW/AM - if anyone has any other intel on him?

Had a little help from an eagle eyed birdie on the ground in Wellington too. 🔎

For those with a height fixation he's 1.84m too!

Danny Vukovic played for the club.

Three for me, and two for them.

I definitely wasn't led this way by a little birdie either... 🤭🫣

Not that you need any more credibility, but his latest post on Instagram has one particularly notable photo

Scored a good goal to open the scoring against AFC when Macarthur beat them away in Auckland towards the end of last season. Then in the next round he scored and provided an assist when Macarthur beat the box-office Jets as well.

Overall four goals in 19 matches with two assists. Macarthur never lost the matches he scored in.

Forgot to mention the five appearances in the AFC CL 2 as well.

You'd hope a visa signing is better than that. Got too many squaddies already. And at least two at sub-squaddie level.

Note the song they've picked to accompany the post. All but confirms YHMs scoop.

Interested to see if he plays as a 9 exclusively or if there will be another visa attacker on the way.

Someone posted a rumour a few weeks back relating to Bidois potentially returning (Think it was about his girlfriend posting in a Welly Facebook page looking for work.

If we aren’t getting an out and out visa striker, then I guess will go with a front two of Bidois or Piper, and Duran.

A front 2 is a must. Otherwise they won't score enough with Rafael Duran front 1. So I imagine the next 3 foreign players could be winger ×1 to partner Rafael Duran, and attacking midfield ×2 for behind them. Piper, Walker as substitutes and any academy attacker.

Durán confirmed on a two year deal.
Three visa spots left to fill. Exciting times!
