In the article saying Eze was going, they said they weren't going to keep Josh either and didn't think they would use an import slot for a keeper.

It's nice to be in April and already have some semblance of a backline signed who have decent minutes together already. I'm not saying I don't want improvements, but LKH-Hughes-Tuiloma-Payne with AKH behind them could certainly turn into a sturdy A-League backline. Sheridan, Smith and Loke another year older in the pro environment. A visa LB and a someone to contend with Alby and I think it's looking solid.

It's anybody's guess what the hell happens further forward.

Agreed with all the above, except I am forever hoping a talented player like Armiento may be retained if Greenacre wants to have formation options.  But I totally understand how he does not fit into the 4-4-2 we will largely adopt it seems.
Najjarine is hard-working and -  like Nagasawa  - gets a lot of criticism for not being a Juan Mata.  I see them both Najjarine and Nagasawa as adaptable players capable of responding to coaches instructions, and good with dead ball.  And for a 35 year old Nagasawa covers more territory than some younger players.  With Piper and LBS likely to be there next seasons there is already a natural understanding with these two.
Building a team completely from scratch is expensive and takes time to bed in, so whatever works should be retained.

Since this time of year consists mainly of throwing out names for fun - Joe Wallis - backup NZU20s keeper to Henry Gray last year.

He's made the bench a few times for West Brom in the Championship this season, so must be going alright in the UK. A one season loan spell from the Baggies? Greeny will know his strengths from the U20s.

Though logically the Nix will look to sign an experienced/journeyman ALM keeper, with the younger AKH and McCarron there as well. That's now that Oluwayemi will be leaving according to Rollo.

Yep, an experienced ALM keeper that may be currently a backup elsewhere would be high on my list.
If you consider that good old Redmayne was "asked to consider retirement" by Sydney, and he is having a decent year at CCM.....  I recall he was quite bitter about suddenly confronting a prospect of unemployment at 37, before making the trip up north. And Kurto was also relegated to the bench as a backup for his club. He is a visa player, but there might be others who are not.

Reportedly Kurto got Australian residency last year. Maybe not far off being an Aussie citizen and non visa player.

Who’re our 6s or 8s? Who’s our LB? Who’re our goal scorers?

We only answered one of those 3 questions this season.

Hope we know the answers to these earlier this time around.

I might add to this with the people off contract, including mixed happiness with Najjarine and Nagasawa’s uncertain status, who our playmakers are too.

Dean Bouzanis
Macklin Freke
Filip Kurto
Jack Duncan
Jack Warshawsky
Noah James
Cameron Cook

From what I gather, they are the off contract Keepers.

I didn't rate him at the Jets, he never played for us but I liked what I saw from Duncan at the Victory. He fell behind Warshawsky when he picked up an injury and missed a couple weeks.

Noah James has looked good when he played for the Jets but seems injury prone.

I reckon we should keep Dan Edwards, he didn't look that out of place.

Said this a couple times on Twitter, I would really like us to make a play for Ben Gibson at the Jets. Only problem is he is one of Tony Rallis' clients, so have to deal with him but that is also why the Jets might not re-sign him.

With Lachlan Rose signing for Dundee United, I imagine Milligan is promising Gibson a much bigger role at the Jets next season. Looking in from the outside hard to see him leaving Newcastle.

And yeah agree Edwards was sort of okay. First season at A League level, and had it disrupted by injury, just when was putting a run of games together. Suits a back 4. Was more consistent than cold & hot Payne. Depends whether Greeny & co think Edwards can improve further.

I don’t mind that. He did fail to convince two coaches that he was the starter.

I still wouldn’t mind perhaps a utility visa that was primarily an attacking LB who could also cover a couple of other midfield roles or say RB too. Tell Edwards he is still a chance but he will have to compete for it.

Fin Conchie - Release or prove me wrong.
Kazuki Nagasawa (V) - 1 +1 year extension max - Sounds fair.
Josh Oluwayemi (V) - 50/50, should he stay should he go - Sounds fair.
Paulo Retre - Release. Not on the same page as the rest of the midfield. Tries hard but not best suited to the current style.
Alex Rufer - Re-sign. Keep Him.
Luke Supyk - Release.
Manjrekar James (V) - Release.
Nikola Mileusnic - Release.
Sarpreet Singh - Sign.
Sander Kartum - Let go back to parent club. Failed to live up to hopes after that great goal on debut.
Ramy Najjarine - Release or prove me wrong.
Dan Edwards - Release or prove me wrong.
Carlo Armiento - Re-sign him.
Ifeanyi Eze (V) - Going but give it a try to Re-sign him.
Eamonn McCarron - Made no more mistakes than anyone else between the posts. I thought he did quite well when he did play.

The only real gripe I have is this frigging 4-2-2-2 formation. I hate it. Route one football. I'd prefer either a 4-4-2 so we have the width for LBS and Armiento to be used for their talents. Or a 4-1-2-1-2 formation for away games mainly. This crap of playing it around the back line and then hopefully a long ball over the top is horrible. Mind you, what we really need is players passing to team mates and not constantly to no one or to the opposition as per the last few seasons. I really miss Kraeve and Pennington. Pennington had a very good understanding with Rufer than made our central midfield strong.

LBS is the sort of player I would pay money to watch, especially out on that wing. Armiento is similar when allowed.

The formation may have been more about what Greeny had than a preference.

Edwards a hard no. Poor distribution and not the best defender.

Nagasawa a no too. Imports need to dominate their position. I'd rather take the risk of finding something better than stick with serviceable.

for keepers, I always thought Matt Sutton would have been a decent signing for both NZ teams when he got released.

Any thoughts on loaning/buying Gray from Ipswich?

Do young keepers ever get loaned to far away A League clubs from their parent European clubs?
Problem is that you are only 2 injuries away from suddenly having to recall your 4th ranked keeper.

That's tricky when they are 30 hours away by plane. I think Gray's loan deals have gone 4th tier, National League and now League Two. A routine of start the season training around the Ipswich first team, then mid season get sent out on loan. He's contracted at Ipswich for another 12 months. He won't be ready for the first team if they get promoted to the EPL, but maybe a chance of being no 2 there next season if they stay in the The Championship.

Generally agree with this but I’d actually keep ramy. I totally understand he is a frustrating player but he worked under Greenie so was more the player that I was expecting to see.

Would love Singh but only the basis he was actually going to be fit. He’d be an expensive medical room player otherwise.

Just chucking a name out there, Brad Smith was released by Cincinnati at the start of 2026 and could fill the LB spot.

Would definitely need a full pre-season though

For LB, I would hope we are giving Ben Chilwell (Chelsea on loan to Strasbourg), NZ father,  a call every year and checking to see if and when he wants to play down here and if he would not take up a Visa spot.  FDV probably has LB position signed up at Auckland FC for as long as he is fit and wants it so we'd be the only NZ buyer.

I think if we don’t get a smart 9 making runs, Kazu is a bit wasted and equally I wouldn’t want him back as a starter in 6 or 8.

I thought he was very good, perhaps almost dominant you might say in that 10 role. Unlike Najjarine, he rarely gave up the ball or killed an attack.

When you say position are you thinking of him in CM or 10? And out of him, Kosta and Kraev who’s had the better season?

I guess I was hesitant about resigning him on his age, but others mentioned that continuity could be handy.

I think he compares to Bally or Tim Brown reasonably well…

But definitely need Rufer and Retre replacements, unless Rufer doesn’t go! 🤞

The only quote in that post that suggests a potential move is "Its been a privilege to be a part of it" which is inconclusive to say the least.

I imagine his family is pretty settled in Melbourne by now as well. I'd welcome it, but I'm skeptical.

This is where the rubber meets the road because the Wellington Phoenix only had a handful of first team regulars contracted to return as of Greenacre’s appointment. Things can change very quickly and it’s possible they’ve already got a few announcements in the drafts waiting to go. But as the dust settled from that heavy defeat to Macarthur this is what the situation was...

Under Contract: Tim Payne, Bill Tuiloma, Corban Piper, Isaac Hughes, Lukas Kelly-Heald, Alby Kelly-Heald, Matt Sheridan, Xuan Loke, Nathan Walker, Anaru Cassidy, Gabe Sloane-Rodrigues, Jayden Smith, Luke Brooke-Smith

Off-Contract: Kazuki Nagasawa, Paolo Retre, Alex Rufer, Manjrekar James, Nikola Mileusnic, Sander Kartum, Dan Edwards, Sarpreet Singh, Ifeanyi Eze, Carlo Armiento, Ramy Najjarine, Josh Oluwayemi, Fin Roa Conchie, Luke Supyk

Take note that the way their contracts were structured means that Loke, Walker, Sloane-Rodrigues, Smith, and Brooke-Smith all move from scholarship contracts to full contracts next season (LBS may have already done so given how much he’s played, not sure). Always possible they restructure a few of those other deals to keep them as scholars for longer... but as it stands Anaru Cassidy is the only dude on a scholarship deal next term so they’ll have several spots to fill. Goalkeeper Eamonn McCarron will surely get one of those and then it may depend on who stays and who goes from the other group. Hard to predict much based on their current Reserves group because the best players in that team are those guys listed in the first sentence of this paragraph. They haven’t really added anyone this year, only pushed a few of the U18s up a grade. Mac Munro, Jack Perniskie, Dan Nelson, and Ben Trenberth seem like fellas who could be in contention. Let’s be honest though, that’s quite a way down the list of priorities. Those are the last decisions that need to be made.

The good news is that there’s a pretty good back four already on board: Tim Payne, Bill Tuiloma, Isaac Hughes, and Lukas Kelly-Heald. All kiwis, all proven ALM performers at this stage of their career, with a good mixture of ages. The bad news is that absolutely everything else is unsettled. Even Alex Rufer, the inspirational captain, is coming out of contract and has been rumoured to be moving to a rival. The Nix conceded 9 goals in the 297 minutes that Rufer didn’t play this season – that’s 2.72 GA/90, compared to 1.72 GA/90 when he was out there. He’s not irreplaceable but bloody hell he’d leave a pretty huge hole if he leaves.

The club have already implied that Josh Oluwayemi won’t be retained. Seems a waste to use an import spot on a position of Kiwi & Aussie footballing strength so they’re going to go after a local there. Alby Kelly-Heald could be that guy, with Eamonn McCarron backing him up, or they might look elsewhere. The NZ option who ranks best on the talent/availability axis would probably be Nik Tzanev.

No surprises that Ifeanyi Eze is expected to gather offers far beyond what the Nix can match so he’ll be goneskees. Can’t see Manjrekar James or Sander Kartum sticking around, James wasn’t even playing much under Greeny while Kartum got hooked at half-time against Macarthur in a rare start (and was only on loan anyway). Kazuki Nagasawa is the sole import you’d imagine might stick around... he’ll turn 35 during the next season but he started every single game of this one so fitness ain’t an issue. If Rufer leaves, the continuity of keeping Nagasawa would be even more useful... although Greeny was playing him on the left wing at the end there so you never know.

Paolo Retre and Ramy Najjarine did enough to warrant negotiations. Carlo Armiento probably won’t pick up that phone after what happened to his minutes – there’s no place for him in a 4-4-2. Nikola Mileusnic is already out the door. The thing about the Aussie fellas is that they don’t tend to hang about for second or third contracts. Sometimes they do but if there are multiple offers then they’re almost always going to prefer the ones from other A-League clubs. It’s not like the Nix are offering finals footy right now.

That leaves Sarpreet Singh whose situation is complicated by having another year on his contract at TSC in Serbia. He’s going to continue to train with the Nix during the offseason leading up to the World Cup... whatever he does beyond that is anyone’s guess right now. Another loan isn’t out of the question but don’t get your hopes up. That leaves Dan Edwards, Fin Roa Conchie, and Luke Supyk. Edwards looked worthy of another season and would surely be agreeable to the prospect. Roa Conchie is worthy but you wouldn’t blame him if he feels it’s time to spread his wings elsewhere after not really kicking on as hoped when he was bossing it at the U20 World Cup a few years back (his case may depend on what Rufer does). As for Supyk... that’s not happening. He played one minute all season. Expect him to hit the trial circuit in the UK sometime soon. And that’s all of them. We should get some updates on this stuff next week as the Chris Greenacre Era of Wellington Phoenix football properly begins.

I haven't really checked out much news on Singh's Serbian club since he's been loaned back to us, but it might be something to pay attention to if we're looking to bring him back permanently.

They play Javor, Radnicki Nis & FK IMT Beograd to finish the season. So it's not a straightforward run to the finish line for them over there.

Singh was smart enough to have had a relegation release clause in his contract with Hansa Rostock when they dropped to the 3.Liga in Germany, and I'd have no doubt it would be the same if Backa Topola drop down in Serbia. I would imagine the list of suitors in Europe are also probably tapped out at this point in time as well.

Something to keep an eye on at least.

Greeny big on restoring pride to the Nix shirt, and Ball would certainly be on the same page re that stuff.
