Can we please have two men on the posts for corners
I just thought it was pretty funny that the dude on the edge of the box was unmarked scored. 2 minutes later there's another corner, unmarked again, got the ball again and we're lucky he didn't score again.

Elliot was playing LB at that stage and Kosta Left CM. Both playing out of position to a certain degree. On both occasions Elliot got drawn into the melley in front of the goal. Leaving space at the back. We were down a player as well. They had something ridiculous like 18 corners. So you'd think we had plenty of practice defending them.
Wonder if Taley should have taken Kosta off and Surman on for the last five minutes or so.
Always lots of could of, should of in hind sight.

On the corner I didn’t notice any Phoenix players bringing it to the attention of the referee that it was a goal kick.
neither did I - most of them were unsighted but it definately hit the Adelaide player after Sail.

Re: Surman: I do not think we had any subs left at that time, unless I am mistaken.  However, despite the corner count, we were not that much more under the pump in the last ten minutes than we were before.  Adelaide came out with the same lucky/unlucky goal that Pennington scored against Perth. Neither "deserved" not "undeserved".  Shark happens.

Hard to read much into the game given being a man down for 70 min. I thought the pitch was not up to its usual standard (the first few passes between the Adelaide CDs showed how much the ball bobbled), but I think this helped us as it slowed Adelaide's play. In that first 25 min when we tried playing out Adelaide defended us very easily, sort of sat in a 424 and blocked our passing lanes out of defence and have pressing triggers when we passed to our FBs. Hard to say how that would have panned out during the game but when we went a man down we were a bit more direct bypassing that first Adelaide defensive block.

I agree and suspect that Sasse will take longer to bed in than Zawada let alone Kraev;  I do not know if we were set up incorrectly for him to play his natural style or whether he may have not have got Uffie's instructions right.

I agree, can see Elliot run out of position and if he had stayed where he was he would have had time to stop the shot.

Not going to be too harsh on Sasse yet, Davila didn't have the best start and that sure changed. We are usually slow starters to the season and I'd take a draw with a player down over a loss

Not worried about any of the imports at all tbh. Far, far too early to read into anything, we’ve only played one game against a ball-dominant, pressing team

this this and this,
Particularly as it was Ugarkovic's forst real game after being cup tied! He will link up better with Lewis, the second half showed that. Penninton will be benched for the forseaable future. Once Ugarkovic is up and running (may take a game or two) I think you'll find the wide players will find more space and get better sevice.

Just a comment on the crowd number and some people's disappointment. Here are the crowds from this weekend.
City/Western 7,501
Brisbane/Macarthur 8,521
Sydney/Victory 21,840

for sure but would say the same for the other Aus teams.

For most to be around 8k, 22 is excellent.

Sydney and Melbourne are the two biggest cities easily? by quite some margin too I think.

1 | Greater Sydney | 5,361,466 | -5,151 | -0.1 | Sydney
2 | Greater Melbourne | 5,096,298 | -60,505 | -1.2 | Melbourne
3 | Greater Brisbane | 2,582,007 | 21,870 | 0.9 | Brisbane
4 | Greater Perth | 2,141,834 | 16,169 | 0.8 | Perth
5 | Greater Adelaide | 1,378,413 | 1,895 | 0.1 | Adelaide

Greater Wellington population would be no more than 500k , can't be bothered with doing the % but its obvious our percentage is way higher, considering the away fanbase was under 20.
We talk about it every year, but for Wellington to get 15k+ to a game with no away fans, you're talking a huge ask. Melb and Sydney, 10m pop and only 21,000 fans turn up?

Not sure what the push back is but *shrug*

Western United and Melbourne City are also based in Melbourne so unless all their fans went to Sydney then I would expect higher there.

I would expect lower ticket sales in general as people are struggling financially world wide right now, so figured when everyone is in single k's 21 was decent.

Also don't get the Wellington population comparisons.  I already said in this thread I was pretty damn happy with an 8k crowd.  Been through some rough seasons with much lower numbers so for a first hit out I though 8 was real decent.

I think 8k was pretty decent. Some in the match thread mentioned that the crowd seemed quiet but that wasn't my experience watching it on tele.

Perhaps the mics were just in the right place but the crowd sounded really involved in the game and the explosion when Waine banged in the goal gave me the tingles down the spine.

Hopefully all the positive vibes out of what was an encouraging performance will add a couple of thousand to the gate next weekend.

I felt the crowds vibe drop after the yellow for sure but when we kept attacking it licked up a bit.

No idea what the goal sounded like when the goal was scored as I was yelling and jumping so much haha.

Much better atmosphere at a smaller stadium. It would be popping off every home game, at full capacity with no spare seats. Use the cake tin for the big matches.

15-20k double tier stadium on that big patch of grass at Brewtown is my dream hahaha. Right next to the train station, awesome pre and post game facilities for the fans. Looks like they’re doing something to that area though so maybe the dream is over before it even started 😭😭.

After spending the first 30 minutes rolling on the floor (Blackwood the most egregious and embarrassing from memory, though he had plenty of competition) 5 Adelaide players surround the ref here, while one tenderly cradles the head of the one who may not make it. #streetsofLaredo

This never evens out over the season. We can’t let ourselves be done over by more cynical operators.

In all fairness dominant teams tend to get the calls, so we need to be that. We know we can play on the counter, but we don’t know if we can play in possession as we have done in the past.

Anyway, I guess we’ll see! Would have enjoyed a clean 3-0, but it’s a bad sign if a team is peaking on opening day.

Oh man get over it.. it was a clear red card despite no intent and the game has ended.. you only need to be sitting close to subs bench to know that Ufuk Talay and his assistants spend 90% of the game yelling at the ref and abusing the assistant referee’s so nix aren’t angels either..

"Tory" was an insulting name for the English Conservative party from the Irish tóraí, meaning "outlaw", "robber", from the Irish word tóir, meaning "pursuit" .
I wouldn't be calling my child after that.

Yeah I agree.  I am not one to bag officials as i am one in a different sport.  Talay does verbally ride the refs when things are not going his way. Sitting in the stands behind the benches and watching,  I reckon the 4th official on Sunday will have gone home with a particularly bad dose of ear ache.

Sometime as a sports official you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.  I thought the red card was orange.  In other words, a card had to come out.  Which colour can be argued either way.  To me it was accidental but at the same time looked very bad.  Does the referee look at intent?  That i will leave to the refereeing experts.

Another case where refs cant win was the stop for the supposed head injury with Goodwin.  Refs are told to stop play in such instances.  Yes, it was very  frustrating as we were launching an attack, but what if he did not stop and the injury then turned out to be life threatening?  As i say, they cant win.

I like Ben Abraham. He has a calm presence, controls games well and isn't prone to the kind of brain meltdowns some other refs seem to experience on a regular basis. I think he's one of the better refs to come through in recent times.

My comment was that they’d pressured the ref as a team like a bunch of ham actors. Like the melodrama above from the ‘highlights’.
In terms of the refs performance I thought possibly he could have given a yellow for an early challenge on Payne, and for persistent fouling on Kraev. He could have let play in for the Nix on one occasion.  I also understand from the comments he missed a goal kick at the death, but I didn’t see that.
But he was mostly consistent and it wasn’t a particularly bad spirited game, we just didn’t win. Which was crap. Am I allowed to feel bad about that? Or is your team losing part of the game and I should get over it?
