I don't think the Roux and Payne comparisons are fair. Paine moved in the opposite direction of the ball to impede the run of a player whereas Roux was atleast moving towards the ball and player. In Roux case you can argue there was at least some intent to get the ball. In Paynes, no intent to go for anything other than the player.

Might explain his lack of protest at the decision??

But on the flip side our player had possession of the ball and was chopped down with Roux not touching the ball from a goal scoring space.

In Paynes case the player hasn't touched the ball in the passage of play yet and is fouled.  He could have had a poor first touch that got defenders back in time (seen it plenty), maybe a defender manages to get back first, etc.

Both for me have too many variables to be a clear DOGSO.  I always thought DOGSO was for really clear ones where a player is 1 on 1 with the keeper (not a defender MIGHT get to be 1 on 1 with the keeper) and then a defender chops them down from behind or something.

And VAR is for clear and obvious errors yea?  Ref thought it was a yellow then spent ages watching the replay over and over and over again.  If it's clear and obvious you'd spot it pretty quick right?  I get it when the ref hasn't seen something and it might take a few goes to look (because not seeing something is a clear error) but the ref saw the contact, and made a call, then had to watch the replay heaps to decide if they were or weren't wrong.  If you are umming and ahhing there is no clear and obvious error.

I dunno.  Might be yellow tinted glasses but I think both are pretty similar cases of 50/50 calls and neither seem justified to overturn the initial call.

From the safety of my living room Palmy has done well- good crowd and no Brosque debacle. Palmy took the game when there was no other option.

Maybe a point against Perth will be seen as good. I admire the way Zadcovic has gone about things. Also Amini is a last chance saloon, Jelacic maybe an up and coming Kiwi and I’m always guna have good memories of David Williams. Plus Ruben was a fun but average player so to see him punching above his weight is good.

I worry that Ugarkovic/Rufer/Pennington won’t drive us forward and give us a chance to catch City. The playoff system is hit or miss (though WU we’re brilliant last season). Premiers is what I want to be.

Good to see Kosta on the scoresheet, with Zawada. Pity Kraev couldn’t bury that mazy run or we’d be bouncing off the walls and with 3 points. LG would be happy.

Perth got Taggart to come back who looks very good.

Who’s guna drive us through the next couple of months and on another run of wins? That’s what I expect from us.

Curious about the defender coming in. Is that guna cut out Surman’s time? Is Wootton’s injury worse than said? Is Uffie reverting to a highly defensive mindset after losing Waine? Why not sign another wing forward? Is Pennington really out of favor?

Phoenix till I die, but I’d like them to win a title well before then!

Uffie on 4 yellows heading into this game, hope he can keep his head and avoid suspension.

He is responsible for all non playing staff on the bench, so if anyone gets chirpy, Uffie will get the yellow. So they all will have to be on their best behaviour.

Oh snap I didn't know that.  I figured the individuals get pinged.

That is only in American college football.
Under FIFA’s Laws of the game, section 12.3, any player or team official can be cautioned or sent off.
The actual offender is the one cautioned or sent off.
Correct. The head coach is only sanctioned if the offender can not be identified. uffie is the regular offender.

I'll put my hand up and admit I was wrong about this. I was going off what Uffie said on the podcast. Phillip Rollo contacted the APL and confirmed that it isn't correct, which is good given Chiefy (I think?) got shown a yellow card.

It felt like we were gonna run away with the game until they scored their first goal. That gave them some confidence & the first half become a very competitive game.

Second half we sat back too much, yet again. This is what Sydney used to do under Arnie, Uffie needs to realise that we don't have the defensive stocks they had. Our strength is trying to hold onto the ball.

Unfortunately, from the interview that Sail did about all the fights, it seems like we think we're good at sitting back, soaking the pressure, and defending small leads.

On another note - can we please never play in Palmy again?

It was very underwhelming never expected the pitch to have a concentration camp fence around. Rain didn't help matters, but the food and drink outlets were poor too.

I have never been to the stadium but on tv it looked like something you would see in a third world despot country. Wire, and a ring of dirt where if a spectator crossed you would be machine gunned down. As for the pitch it looked like a few tanks had done a parade just before the game. Surely the nix could have done better in Napier or Christchurch

well car tyres at least! there have been several incidents on speedway tracks where the cars just flip and crash through the "protective wire".
For a last ditch option it serves a purpose, I think it's pretty obvious the club didnt really want to go back hence the large gap between visits. Ifill was playing in the last game we were there.

I thought we were going to get Stock Cars as the halftime entertainment. Very disappointing. The chicken wire fence was to either keep the fans in or stop the players from getting near the fans if they had scored.

I left right after the game and got home in 1hr 45 mins. yay.
The ring of Dirt or the ring of sh.ithouse? The pitch was abysmal, the "seating" was the same as it was when we last played there. That place is a frigging embarrasment. I think they only had 3 ground speakers working. The view from the chicken wire fence was horrible. I'll post some pictures from my phone soon.

The only redeeming feature about Palmy North is that their Carl's Jr's has actually improved.

Now, to the game. The referee with the 1970's Porn Star Moustache had to be the star of the show. He wrecked it. That red was questionable at best. David William has still got that X factor and scored twice. He is a class act. That the Nix decided to sit back has again bitten us on the arse.

Ugo had a pretty good game but he has a different style to Clayton Lewis. He did very well imho. Oli pulled off some good saves but with their two goals, I felt he could have done better. Having said that, how he never broke an ankle in  that first half on the s.hit pitch amazes me even now.

2 points lost in my opinion. Nix, never ever have another game at that ground, never!! Hang on, we said that last time too and nothing about that dump has improved. After all the money they must be raking in from Rugby and stock cars, they have not spent more than a hundred dollars on reinvestment. I bet the rich person lounge is well stocked though.

Just a very frustrating game. Not that I could see it too closely as the chicken wire kept us all at least 30 yards from the sidelines. Again, a shi.thole ground.

You could have moved up to the stands, there were plenty of free seats. But I agree, it's a terrible stadium. And I hope I never have to venture into Palmerston North ever again. What a place.

I saw the empty spaces but I also saw the Red Badge security at the base. I thought they were checking tickets for your very reason. I guess the only redeeming feature about the ground itself, was the FREE car parking, not the $35 ripoff at Sky.

In 1996 the first ever game of Super Rugby (I think the first ever game of professional rugby) was oddly enough held at that stadium on a Friday night. Me and carload of ex Massey mates drove down from the Naki where I was living at the time.

In the excitement a bottle of Jack Daniels (or was it 2) were purchased in Bulls. I sat behind the wire in a poor state. By the 2nd half I was bringing back up whatever I had eaten, and lying comatosed in the gravel. Some mother with her kids said to my friends 'look after your mate'. They did the opposite and dropped my dead weight carcass in some flax bushes near the stadium entrance post match. I belated apology to that ma & urchins by the way.

Woke about 2am, somehow found my way back to the student flat we were staying at. Caught a bus back to New Plymouth the next day, in a sad state. My mates staying on the National rugby 7s then held annually in Palmy. Ingolorious stuff, and my last time at the Ring of Dirt.

Oddly similar to my old man's experience at that exact same game lol. Super rugby at its finest.

we are fourth, (3rd equal with WSW but 4th due to 1 goal) but we are travelling to a Victory team who are god awful right now, in the form we are in we could take the three points and at least for a time hold 2nd. (we are the first game of the weekend).
CCM have a tough game against Sydney FC, and the battle of the westies will decide if we reain 3rd or 4th. We wont have Lewis or Payne. Lewis is the only one who is hard to replace, Surnman is decent enough to cover Payne at CB, heck even Rufer did well in Palmy at CB.

Without trying to sound a like a dickhead, the difference is the concentration camp fences were electrified and millions of people couldn’t escape them and calling the stadium, where you can leave after 2 hours, and a place you go for your entertainment and pleasure, a concentration camp, rather weird and unnecessary . As someone who is from a holocaust survivor family and been to multiple concentration camps, the comparison is rather offensive.. not to mention, thousands of stadiums around the world have fences around the ground, and is a very common site from Argentina to Brazil, to Germany to even Thailand which have football specific stadiums .. but anyway I am going to be called “woke” and “soft” for this, but I think you should probably revise how you would describe the stadium, but feel free to do what you wish 😃

I worry a little. Victory away has been a tough fixture for us in the past, and their recent defeats/draw have been quite close games. Remember we lost 2-0 to them in that season they were absolutely terrible? Wouldn't be counting our chickens before they hatch.

Coming in late. Pitch was terrible. The fact they didnt bring the fencing down sucked (But we knew that would be the case before hand). Food and drinks were ok. Turn out was good for the weather.

I think the star of the show though was sitting so close to the pitch. It felt so much more alive and closer than the ring of Fire. I had multiple people comment on it.
We we could get a smaller more intimate ground!

I live in Tauranga and I've been to 1 game in Wellington and 2 at Eden Park. By far the best atmosphere was eden park despite the size of the stadium. I could basically touch David Ball I was sitting so close to the pitch and Davila was so good to watch. To be fair to Wellington the crowds in Auckland were probably a fair bit larger but still. I really think attendances would go way up if you had a purpose built stadium in Welly, the atmosphere would be awesome! Too bad its not in the budget...
