Well, I am not an expert on LBS and happy to accept that others here think he could be thrown in at the deep end :-) All I am worried about is seeing him flattened early in the game, as this is usually when the physical teams that like to assert themselves go hard against our key players. Good to see that Nagasawa learned to waltz away from these niggly challenges by now.
Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days
Head coach Giancarlo Italiano is keen to bring Sander Kartum into his Wellington Phoenix starting line-up after the Norwegian’s goalscoring debut, but says he needs to take a cautious approach.
The attacking midfielder scored moments after coming on as a substitute against Newcastle Jets, but Kartum might not be physically ready for a starting role.
Sander Kartum. … promising debut.
“That’s an ongoing discussion with the staff. We have to put player welfare first,” Italiano said ahead of Friday’s men’s A-League match against Melbourne City.
“I’ve got two players in that position where I want them starting, that’s Nikola Mileusnic and Sander.
“Sander is being integrated slowly. He also had a hip injury before he left Scotland, so we’re monitoring that.
“If you ask me personally, I’d start him and play him until he falls over, same with Nikola, but we have to manage their injuries and respect the advice from the medical staff.
“I want them playing more, and we’re trying to push them as much as we can. It’s just a very fine and delicate situation to balance.
“We also have got Bill [Tuiloma] that’s come into the team and is in the same boat [and] he hasn’t played for a large chunk of time.
“We have to really be responsible because … I maybe made an error last year when I rushed a player back in and then he was out for a longer period than what was expected.”

Procrastinixing
Thanks for the stats. Losing 4 out of the last 5 doesn't fill me with confidence 😞
Hope they can put in an almighty performance and bank 3 points. Wibblebutt
Procrastinixing
Can anyone enlighten me on our home record against Melbourne City, cause I feel it is not good.
W11 D2 L8, but we've lost 4 of the last 5 at home
We look a little better on the field now than when the last 4 games were played. Melbourne City looks a little less impressive now than they did over the previous 4 games against us. I would go as far as suggesting that the recent M City win against Auckland says more about the Auckland form than M City form. The only caveat is the arrival of Ryan Teague which will add to their scoring arsenal. Arzani and Behich are dangerous but Teague is very good. It will be a tough game but this season they all are. Hope the ref will keep an eye on Ferreyra - his standing on prone Auckland player's limb on the ground was sickening to watch.

I will never forget Smeltzy scoring that goal against the Azurri in SA at Polokwane Stadium in the 2010 WC ( now Peter Mokabe Stadium) . He came running over to the corner where we were seated and smacked the corner flag-hard!!! And he was only 30 metres away! He probably heard my voice!!!
Won't happen but I'd like to see Loke in place of Payne, and LBS for Najjarine. IMO Najjarine is weak on defence, and ( occasionally very good on attack, but not often). LBS is strong fast and determined on defense, and often brilliant with the ball. Payne vs the Jets looked unfit, certainly well below his best. I think he might've peaked (think Nathan Burns, and David Ball, who hung on too long).
Those two left a huge hole on the R which led to goals 3 and 4, with Payne jogging back looking on.
The Jets showed what can happen when you have faith in talented young players, and the Nix have 2 in the squad. Play them!coochiee

Ain't no way Payne has peaked. He was great his first game back and was out for quite some time - he'll be fine and back to his best, and his best right now is far better than Loke. Mileusnic also before LBS at this point.
Didn’t expect dropping Piper, McCarron and Sheridan.
Good on ya chiefy ,good to see some boldness!
It’s bold if it works and you look like a hero. But if it doesn’t work it’s terrible for team morale.
I wouldn’t have dropped Piper tbh, he wasn’t that bad during Newcastle match, just not clinical enough. He adds a point of difference. Maybe he’s being rested due and its minutes management.
The other 2 I can’t say I disagree with. Sheridan has been okay but not against mixing things up in that position.

I agree. Even though his execution was below his usual standards last week, Piper created a lot and caused chaos.
And I think two strikers was working well for us. A single striker with Najjarine behind him doesn't give us much kapow up front.

Sheridan has not been ok in the last few games so am pleased to see that Chief has made that call. Never would want to see him on the left hand side of the field again.
Keeper, I can kind of understand.
Piper, I would like to know what the Chief is smoking in his pipe.
It looks like Chiefy decided to strengthen defensive midfield with Retre, and then have Nagasawa and Najjarine (both good passers of the ball) feeding Eze.
Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days
Don’t like how deep we are sitting. It’s not a high line sure. But this team is/should be attack, attack, not Chief’s old game plan of bore into submission and win by one goal.
1. selected this team, and 2. put them into this tactical framework
you could expect this performance. i'm not seeing many individual issues, i'd say this is playing out as intended. i don't understand why the coach is intent on taking this team backwards every now and then.
