Well that sucks. Ok we had lots of key players missing and it was hot and humid and they have a big game Tuesday but there is not many teams in the world that can sit in front of goal for 40 minutes and not give up chances. I thought they really missed Rufer. They needed a cool head in mid field who could get hold the ball and control play.

We didn’t notice or tighten up when Majok almost scored on one floated to the back post.

And agree. Zawada won us zero time or territory, and Old was fairly similar.

Good save from their keeper to deny Kosta. 2-0 would have been enough. Thought Zawada was out of place there too- should have been headed back post as Conchie had continued his run. Sorry Oskar!

Let's face it, if we played a better team we would have been slaughtered in the last 20 minutes. Putting a bunch of youngsters on was enterprising, but also a sheer necessity due to suspensions and we nearly got away with it.

Foul or not we needed to be better at closing that out. We did the exact same last week and got punished - The only difference was we had some 15 odd extra minutes to conjure up a winner.

Yeah you can argue we were trying to protect three points, but that's two points dropped to an absolute crap Brisbane side. We decided to stop playing after about 60/70 minutes, invited them in and we've fluffed our lines... I always think it when this happens, but never say it out loud, but every time we concede in such a fashion, I think 'Good' - We're one match closer to actually learning the lesson and applying ourselves to playing football rather than rolling out the welcome mat.

Hard lessons to learn, but simply must do better. Do we want to stay top of the table? Because when push comes to shove, the top, top sides close that result out.

Imo - experienced players to blame not Chief. Except perhaps should have left  Kraev on. Just a hunch.

The kids were good and it’ll be great to get Rufer back to rally the troops on Tuesday.

No worse than our goal.

If we'd played better we would've won. Brisbane deserved that goal.

Monto is right in that on probabilities, we should have pressed on after Kraev's goal before Zadkovich brought the new subs on. Had we added a goal or two on, we would have had a cushion to buffer their late indlaught with six new men.
But I totally accept that it was not easy without the core players available.

Exactly, can we please stop this nonsense of "a good point away" when we play away to teams that are a fudgeing shambles?

It applies for WSW or Victory, not for fudgeing useless Brisbane.

Brisbane are honestly terrible, I’ve watched their last 5 games probably and they’ve all been sharke.

Most disappointing result all season for me, but in context of the season, this is the only time I’ve felt this way all season, and we have played 15 games.

Newcastle and Sydney were fair losses, but this one reminds me of previous years as nix fan.

Got more pissed off about the foul.

First Kelly Heald- very good counter press. Gets through on goal. Ref thinks oh, this might hurt the home team and blows up very late.

Old- clear foul for most of the game and definitely as set by that standard above.

It’s football though.

No way Brisbane deserved shark. Couldn’t fashion a single good opportunity all game and had to tread all over the line v the rules to get that last one. They had nothing. Rojas had a moment or two and then was tackled well.

We played well enough to get 3 points. We should have got 3 points.

Exactly what I was thinking. Brisbane are a piss poor team who that whole game I didn’t feel threatened once until they shoved Ben old to the ground.
Look on twitter, 71 minute Kelly heald is called for a foul, no push, minimal contact, in the same area. Then Ben old is shoved to the ground with two hands.

Note that VAR was Kris Griffiths Jones. Whenever we get sharkted on by the VAR I ALWAYS go check who the operator is, and it is always him, ALWAYS.

Those 2 points could cost us some position at the end of the season, and I’m supposed to believe that the non-call is justifiable because we sat back and defended our lead. Wow.

Pace yourself buddy- we’re only just over halfway in the season and this was a mild advantage that was given.

We could look at Payne getting more time than his peers in Jay O’Shea.

The amazing simulation yellow on Pennington (without which we have a full midfield against CC), the bizarre off side call after we won a penalty against Victory, the way the new Kiwi club gets to pay $18 million compared to whatever Perth’s owners put up…the ridiculous yellow on Paulsen for playing the game at the same speed all match despite the Adelaide crowd.

If we’re a genuine threat to the Victory going down the line I think we’ll see worse!

But as the commentators observed we’re not a dirty team and we make a lot of clean tackles that are very hard to deny. We don’t mouth off. The one or two times we’ve kicked the ball away we’ve been pinged with yellows.

We should have won that. We just made things difficult for ourselves. But Brisbane didn’t deserve anything, sorry, they were rubbish.

Just finished watching a replay.   Fudge me,  after multiple replays zoomed in how in the blue hell is that blatant push over not a foul?

Surely the Nix can take that to the refs and confirm that's legal so they can push over the CCM players like that on Tuesday???

You hit the nail on the head there. As league leaders we come with a certain expectation. Can you imagine MV, WSW or SFC going there and sitting deep to defend a 1:0 lead or hoping to snatch a draw?
We're top of the league but sometimes still play with the mentality of a mid table team.
To be fair, its only Chiefy's first season as head coach so it might be something to think about at some stage.

Jut arrived home Sunny Coast from Suncorp. Big group of Nix supporters. Well over 100. Crowd itself pitiful just over 5,000. Considering greater Brissy is close to 2M, and the whole SE QLD pocket (within 1-2 hours of Brisbane) is about 3.5M, that number is awful. Roar in the Ange heyday period were from memory 2nd only to the VUC for size of regular crowds. I guess with a salaried capped league every club can return to glory days, but they have been shark for a long time now. You get a sense the ALM as a whole is in decline going to a ground 90% empty.

Hughes looked so small. Thought I was watching Sutton for a long time. OVH some meaty tackles. I'll read through the thread tomorrow, but seemed an obvious foul in the build up to the Roar goal. No replay of that on the big screen, just the goal. Game itself pretty dire, plenty of blocked shots but it also felt like the Nix were in control defending okay, until the goal. Conchie had a real chance to put Barba free on the counter, but poor attempted pass. Paulsen didn't have much to do. Brisbane were pretty awful. Talking to a local fan, feeling is that it's been an unsettling mess since Aloisi left.

My Peruvian nephew got a selfie with half Peruvian Chiefy, who apparently speaks very little Spanish but passable Italian. So lets hope new signing Salas has some basic Ingles.

What top sides do is get points in situations where their side is depleted by injuries, suspensions etc. i am disappointed we didn’t win but you have to admit we are top of the bloody league and you don’t get there at this time of the year without being a decent side.

Read thru some of the previous comments (to the detriment of my IQ) and some of this talk about a conspiracy to stop the Phoenix winning is just crap. We didn’t close the game out when we should have. Players need to take responsibility, learn from it, and not repeat the mistake.

Yeah there was a good amount of contact on Old and it could have been blown up for a foul but wasn’t clear cut in my eyes. If it had been called I’d feel half sorry for Brisbane fans.

Caught the second half after a gig, went to brush my teeth and came back and it was 1-1. Couldn’t believe they’d equalised as they weren’t a threat and couldn’t believe it wasn’t a foul. But there we go. Prior to the game I’d have taken the draw but now feel it was a missed opportunity despite the threadbare squad. Hopefully they learn that we can’t sit on a 1-0.

Not sure if I should be unhappy of relieved we came away with the point last night, but thats a draw for you through and through. Big picture though, we are still top with a 3 point buffer on Victory.
Had we not had all the abcences I think we may have approached the game differently and gone for the win. It was pretty obvious that Chiefy had sent the lads out there not to lose and we almost came away with the 3. Rojas coming on clearly made a massive difference, which is a real sad inditement on their squad, if a guy who has been out of football for 6 months and only been training with them for 3 weeks can make that much difference they are in some trouble.
Our replacement players did exceptionally well in hot conditions. Hughes looked solid at the back and worked well with Wootton. OVH did ok without really troubling the defence too much, he and Ball combined well. Conchie and Gillion played their parts too.
There was definately some questionable non-calls from the ref, loads of shirt pulling and pushing going on which he let go (from both sides, so it wasnt really unfair to anyone).
Hopefully they'll get back to Welly get a chance to freshen up and welcome back their captain and Sutton (fingers crossed) ready to take on CCM who play Adelaide tonight so will have a day less to prepare for the Tuesday kickoff.

Been a nix supporter since day one and i usually take whats spouted in these forums with a grain of salt but i have to bite with this one. Why are we squabbling over a point away in Brisbane in the heat, with a few players out. Sure we could've held on for the 3 points with a bit better management and experience. But the reality is we navigated a tricky fixture and scenario and got a point so we're still top of the league heading in to two big home games. We still have the momentum and now we have players returning, new signings arriving.

It's our best season to date (so far) but we can't expect them to march to the title like man city winning 13 games in a row. Plenty of titles won by united in the late 90s early 00s where win with taking a point in an away game in challenging circumstances regardless of the oppostions spot in the table. Last night was still a result at a venue where for 16 yrs we've hardly had a sniff. In fact for 16 yrs an away point by parking the bus from the 1st minute let alone a lucky win was all we could hope for. Let's just get behind the nix and enjoy the ride. We've endured enough frustration and false hope in seasons past.

Merry nixmas!!!

Also there has to have been a certain amount of trying to conserve energy for a short turn around.

If that draw is combined with a win, it would be much better than if every player was gassed but got a win, and we get pumped on Tuesday.

Draw away, win at home. Mariners will be tough but we’re still on track.

Panic stations if we lose to Western United or something but still feeling confident. Rufer and Payne to come back in, Old and Zawada can’t be far away, Salas arriving soon.

Hughes, Wootton and Surman were immense, OVH and LKH looked great in the somewhat unfamiliar wingback positions. Kraev was solid too, showed some real leadership to step up when we needed him to.

We were noticeably short a step as the game wore on, we were always second to the ball towards the end and the goal was coming, just a shame the game didn't end a couple of minutes earlier.

Part of that might have been the heat, part of that might have been a bunch of players without a lot of game time being asked to play for 90, part of that might have been managing the work load for Tuesday, whatever it was the team was fatigued and a draw was probably a good result in the circumstances.

So 5 of the starters were 21 or younger. Then on came Conchie (20) & Gillon (19).
Surprised how short Hughes looked on the field. But maybe it was just being alongside giants like LKH & Surman. Soccerway has Hughes at 183cm.

Chiefy’s game plan last night was very conservative.
It was designed to reduce the risk of shipping goals, conserve energy levels in the sapping humidity, and give the younger guys a chance to settle in, especially those starting for the first time.
We have seen over the first half of the season, the defence working pretty successfully, with an impressive reduction in goals given away.
The big issue for me, still, is our performance in midfield. Right from the get-go it’s been lacking in the accuracy of passing and the support for the man on the ball just isn’t there. Passing length is longer as a result, and turnovers come quickly and more regularly.
We cannot and should not accept that Roofs is the only one capable of shutting down attacks and creating an attack on his own.
Our favoured route to goal is still down the wings almost exclusively, even when we have an average defence like Brisbane. Its so predictable.
I think the selection of Salas is a good one, assuming he’s able to stamp his authority in that midfield, enabling himself and Roofs to become more attack-minded as well as defending well.
This should help the inane back-passing that blights our game. Possession in the midfield becomes even more critical.
I know it will take time for Salas to meld into the squad.
This is not trying denigrate our other midfielders. Its about changing the mindset to have confidence to attack through the guts head-on.
It’s a fine line to draw though.
We cannot retain our position at the top of the league by scoring the odd goal and expecting to win.
The newbies in the team did ok last night. They did well enough to silence a few of the critics.

Watching the Roar game live, more and more I thought Salas is going to potentially be a great signing. Based on his experience & pedigree I reckon he would have thrived last night. He'll be the sort of guy, that when the Nix are under the pump, he'll get the ball deep, use his body to cleverly draw a foul, slow the whole tempo down, take 30-60 secs to play the free, relieve the pressure. It's what older experienced Latino players do so well.

I can vividly remember the Costa Rica ve AWs playoff in 2022, and an eager Stamenic off the bench comitted a bit of an unnecssary foul late on, on a Tico near their box. It took literally a minute for the CR player to take the free kick, fluffing around, without it seem like blatant time wasting. They are masters at that sort of stuff. Frustrating as hell for rival players or fans, when you are chasing a goal(s).

Also on the counter Conchie 2nd half had a great opportunity to put Kosta through, but he miss hit the pass. That's Salas and I wager, it's Kosta in one on one with the keeper. That's no indictment on young Conchie, in his first season as a pro. In Chiefy we trust.

Should've won that game last night with second stringers that Roar side was so so poor up until last 10-15 mins. Would've likes to have seen us be more aggressive in our approach but i guess its up to the coach..if he wants a point or try steal a game its his call. You could see the equaliser coming though. Still to of the table...
