I cannot get behind this "wahs" business, but yes the NRL had a huge following before the warriors joined, as a kid I had a sea eagles lunchbox even though I had no idea where manly was.

And when the warriors started it was a completely different era when there was nothing else to do but crack open a db draught and watch the league in one of the five channels on sky. This was back when all of the internet in NZ went through Waikato university, so there wasn't much distraction there.

Fairly sure there were free to air games earlier than that too…

The Kit thing bugs me, we're a Wellington team who wear yellow, and fair enough the other kit in contrasting colours is black. But it seems we now don't have 'Home' and 'Away' kits, we have Spark and Oppo kits and I assume we can choose when we wear them. I'd be interested to see the ALeague site, I'd assume it refers to home and away kits, not Spark/Oppo kits.

Why can't we make Yellow kits with Oppo on them as well as Black Kits with Spark on them and vice versa, each know they will get the same amount of advertising time, some home and some away.

It was ludicrous when we played the Mariners and they played in Wellington in yellow.

Alleluia.
I'm with you 100%.
I email a complaint to the Phoenix every time they use that piss poor dark kit at home, its just dumb. Not only should we wear home strip at home, but the dark kit is horrible to view. Bright, differentiating kits should be used please for football, don't follow the eggballs obsession with black.

I think it is also important to remember how big each competition is comparatively. The NRL is a much larger comp and so when the warriors are doing well it is hard not to hear about it. The ALeague just does not have the same pull. The warriors, when they were sitting 4th got so much prime time but the Nix sitting first might be lucky to get one story in the sports news per week!

A lot of kiwis supported an NRL team like Balmain or Manly or many of the others before the Wahs entered the competition.
True but thats not really relevant so much anymore. There are adults in their early thirties that only ever knew the warriors being in the comp. At this point it has become a generational team.

Regardless, even if a kiwi supported say the rabbits - their second team would almost always be the Wahs

I mentioned it in the CCM game thread and its been mentioned by a few here too: Kosta's gone off the boil.

I wonder if all of the talk about career best form got to his head and has put him off his game.  He's not been overly flash the last few games. More like the Kosta we see play for the AWs and Nix before this season then the one who scored in 5 consecutive games.

We need him firing as Zawada is out for the rest of season (as it looks to me).

Kosta is an amazing player but he's not a Zawada type CF. He's got a big toolbox but it has it's limitations.  Tell me I'm wrong but I don't think that he's great at scoring with his head. And he needs the ball to come across his body. Rufer and Pennington have put in a lot of accurate balls over his shoulder and he's not great with those.

Italiano - “I hope no one takes offence to this but New Zealand is not a football country. It’s rugby union predominantly and mainstream media would be more concerned with the performance of the All Blacks, and so they should be,” Italiano said.
“But in order to gain that respect we need to reach a milestone or some big moment that turns the narrative, and that’s what we’re trying to do.
“To jump up and down and say look at us and what we’re doing, I wouldn’t want to do that. For me it’s more about performance and what we give and hopefully everything falls from that.”

and this is the key part for me from Rollo :
Part of the Phoenix’s problem is that they don’t play sexy football nor do they have many big-name players, relying on a core group of hard-working Kiwis.
They can be devastating on the counter-attack but the main reason they are top of the table is because they are hard to beat.
The Phoenix have kept teams scoreless on seven separate occasions this season and have the joint best defensive record in the competition.
It might not be pretty but it is effective.

I am happy with the club owners doing whatever they are doing to keep the club financially resilient.  We may not have won the league (yet), but following Terry's financial whoopsie the club has been very stable since.  We have avoided the ownership problems of Perth, Brisbane or the Jets.

You dont understand the statement "Yes im fully aware of the reasons why"
Dosnt mean i have to like it and from what im seeing im not the only one who dosnt like it.
Wouldnt be many teams in football who would allow another team to wear their colors at their home stadium. You seem to think thats fine.
What would be so wrong with having one home shirt with Oppo on it and one with Spark on it and wear them alternate weeks. No need at all to have one color for either sponsor.

except the cost factor - whether you believe it or not, it's exactly as the club (Dome) has explained it. The money generated by having two main shirt sponsors created a unique issue, with both sponsors wanting equal exposure at home and away. In order to keen expenditure toa minimum, as per board directive, they had one Oppo kit and one Spark kit, each to be used at home as euqally as possible. Creating a black and yellow version of each added to the cost - simple. That's the why, you dont have to like it, but moaning about it every time the bloack kit is used at home is not only pointless but tiresome.
As for emailing the club everythime this happens (Fenix?) talk about beating your head against a brick wall - has anyone responded?

I understand the statement, but that doesn't change the financial reality.

It was a legitimate question though, is it better to be purist and lose or compromise and have a shot at winning the league? No wrong answers, just opinions.

So much bullshark

First up, kiwis love a good tackle and a hard hitting centre. Rufer’s Wellington’s best since Smith and Nonu. Stop pretending a bunch of aimless longshots and Aussies dribbling down blind alleys is better than Rufer crunching someone, legally, in the middle of the park. Rufer’s on fire!

Secondly, Rufer is a fairly big name in NZ football! Homegrown and nephew of the Oceania footballer of the century. And how did Nani go? Old names that can’t press or run for 90 minutes hold a team back. None of the best players in the A league are ‘names’ until Fox sport starts Arzaning or Kouling them. And Waine has done better than Arzani- did Rollo talk him up as a name before he went to the Championship? Not the Nix’s fault or failure there Phil. The names the Nix has are good enough to be table toppers for half a season. To have produced the best table top lead  ever by a Nix team. If the public don’t know who they are that’s not entirely on the club.

Thirdly, if we’re not winning everything they’ll say we look good with Davila/etc etc etc but that we don’t have the spine to close out games and win. If we do close out games they call us boring. Leaking late goals doesn’t make a team sexy.

Fourthly, we’ve scored some sublime goals this season. We hold possession like farkn prime Barcelona or whoever. Old is as good a dribbler as any we’ve had. Kosta, Kraev and Zawada finish as well as anyone. The interchanges between Payne, Kosta, Ball, Old, Kraev etc etc can be as good as anyone.

Fifthly, there’s not much between the clubs. Before we were one or two goals behind the top scorers. After injuries and card suspensions leaving us short handed the last few games, we are 4 behind on goals scored 28-32. That’s not really a significant difference.

I’m sure I’ve got plenty more too. I’ll fire them off if I think of anything!

But it’s lazy and irresponsible for a football journalist in NZ to call our most defensively organised team boring.

There’s no team playing consistently ‘sexy’ football in the A league. There is one team that’s never won anything that’s 5 points clear and fighting like heck with a tough run of fixtures to come to change that. How about writing about some of our heroic performers, rather than repeating Fox Sport/Archie Thompson/ Melbourne Victory bollocks?

Football has defense and attack, and a surprising number of people are fans of great defense too.

Here’s a potential topic(s) for the papers:

A player by player comparison with previous top Nix teams. Who would make a combined team? Who would win if they played a mini tournament? Who would the coach be?

Who have been the A league’s best defenders of the last ten years? Is it true that defense wins titles? Is the reputation the A league has as a physical league fair and why does it have that reputation? Should dirty be thought of as part and parcel of a good defense?

What pathways are there for managers out of (and into) the A league? Why are we producing so many good kiwi players, but so few managers?

Are there fans in the home towns of Kraev and Zawada following us? How about in towns in Italy where Pennington played? How do they rate the football and the Kiwi players?

What makes a good assistant? How difficult is it for an assistant coach to step up? Looking at the differing paths of Luka Trani, Vidosic, Corrica, Ufuk Talay and Chief.

What is sexy football? Rating past Nix teams on their ‘Rizz’ factor. (Go on bud! Kia kaha!)

Where is Hard News? Finding the man who started shirts off. His thoughts on successive generations of active support fandom at the Nix.

The stereotypical image of NZ football past is John Adshead and Kevin Fallon, tough British ex-pats. Is that still true? How represented in Phoenix fandom are fans with heritage in Europe, Asia and the Americas? That heritage has certainly been useful for recent players such as Boyd, Rojas and Cacace. When will Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues make his debut? Is there still a place for a British accent sideline calling on players to get stuck in?

What do (fringe) All Whites overseas think of the Nix’s season? Are any worried about their AW spot as new players such as Surman come through? Would they consider a return to the A league with  Wellington or Auckland at any point?

What are the most memorable Phoenix hair styles after Salas arrives with the yellow and black?

How superstitious have the Phoenix been? Are they more so or less so this season? Who was the most superstitious Nix player? Are their fans superstitious?

You ask about how Italians view Kiwi players. I can't really answer that. But I want to put forward a view the Italians have which I NEVER considered before going to Italy:

Italian football is not Dirty.
"Football is different from Rugby Union or Cricket (Gentlemen's games), in Football the referee is not an impartial observer, the referee is part of the game, he's on the field of play. AND if you can trick the referee into giving you a penalty or an opponent a red card, that's not cheating, THAT'S CUNNING (Forbo, in Italian). To say a player is very cunning is complimentary in Italy, where in NZ you might call him Dirty or a cheat".

In Italy if you go out and make a reckless challenge and get yourself a red card, you're not "Forbo".

Another point that I wanted to make and another thing that I learnt from playing football in Italy. This is, I think,  in response to something Martinb posted about Rufer's tough tackles in midfield. Tough tackles are occasionally necessary, they're spectacular and get a crowd ryled up. But they are generally an ineffective way for a team to consistently win the ball from an opponent. They cause quick fatigue, injury and disciplinary action.

In my opinion Rufer has learnt this and has moved his game away from tough tackles. He still makes 1 or 2 in a game when necessary but he generally wins the ball with cunning now. The difference between the tough tackling midfielder that Rufer used to be and the clever midfielder that Rufer is now is spectacular. Now he wins the ball 25+ times a game instead of 7.

But Rufer does not work in a vacuum:

Another thing that's different from the 4 previous years that I've been watching the Nix is that the 2/3 DM's work as a team to win the ball. Pennington or Al-Taay usher opponents into Rufer's challenge. Makes me think about AC Milan of 20 years ago.

I agree with Phillip Rollo;

Nix have chosen to be difficult to beat this season.

Melbourne City have chosen to be averagely easy to beat.

Western United made a tactical decision to be very easy to beat.

There's no difference in the quality of any side in the A-League. League position only depends on how beatable the coach has chosen his team to be.

I don't understand why Chiefy chose for us to be this difficult to beat.

Generally I think we are a boring team that shows flashes of brilliance on the counter. We are good at defending in numbers and holding possession.

But we do struggle to score against teams that sit back against us - the CCM game is an example.

For all the comments about the best advertising a club can do is win the league, I think they're right at the end of the season, but the 50% drop off in attendance shows that winning is not simply enough to get punters in - they want to be excited. CCM was dull. Average Joe Blogs would of gone out saying typical football game, no one scored yadda yadda yadda.

If you want to get good coverage on the news, score a screamer, create some excitement, get some hype. Then you will get crowds.

Crowds will come to finals footy regardless, because of our countries mentality.

The probelem with "entertaining" football is that it comes with risk. We've played more attackling styles of football and won nothing, finished 6th out of 10 teams. Sure "worldies" are exciting, but they are only exciting becasue they are rare. If it becomes the norm it too becomes same same and boring. The beauty of the game we love is that it can be played in so many different ways  and I agree to the non-footballing public this hard to understand. The regular fanbase want the nix to win the league, and they understand that to do this you need to avoid losing first, because if you lose a game 3-4, the crowd will have been entertained but you've come away with nada! Winning 1-0 in a gritty tough match is way more important as far as a club is concerned.

There has to be some middle ground, and using words like boring speaks more about the person using the word than the team being described. Personally I find a tactical 0-0 game very entertaining, but then I'm a hardcore football/nix fan. Winning is exciting, and we are doing that, we arent smashing teams but that doesnt happen that often in the league anyway. Being top of the league is exciting, unknown territory for the club, we should be celebrating that. Personally I'd love the casuals to come and see a 3-0 smashing, but I also understand that this is not how we are set up to play, but the casual fan may not get it. Hell even some of the fans dont seem to like that we are playing a brand of football that has us winning.

The above is one of the best comments on the topic and I would give it three "this" if I could.
Football watching is a pastime hence subject to personal preferences, whims and emotions, just like any other activity on the broad spectrum between mild addiction and fanatical religion.  Hence we all will have subjective views depending what we are in it for. A casual "walk up" pundit will enjoy a good game, the buzz, the result, and not care if the home team wins any silverware months later.  A "boring game" will not bring them back (losing at home 3:0 does not help either).  But those of us who are in it (seemingly) for life, think one season at a time, or longer (ownership cycle), and take less entertaining games in our stride if they help our long term goals (not losing games, not losing badly, winning ugly, etc as means of staying on top of the league).
I love the fact that even when the team is doing well we we can still find something to bellyache about ("yeah, we're winning, but it's boring"). Possibly we all suffer from low oxygen to the brain due to altitude, with our club at the top of the ladder for such an extended period of time. Long it may continue.

Nix win, check
Victory lose, check
CCM lose, check
Melbourne City get smashed by the Roar 5-1, check (I love seeing City lose because they were so successful)
Pennington breaking his goal drought, check
Me buying my long awaited training top, check

Just for once all the planets aligned and the God of Football smiled down on this club of our dreams. This may happen few times so it makes them all the more sweeter.

Still $35 for non Season Ticket Holders, Still lots of empty car parks. $22 for Season Ticket holders BUT you have to book - go figure that out with all the empty car parks.

$22?!? it's cheaper to find a park on the street, pay for three hours $9.50 and walk to the stadium, compared to the $15 that is charged for rugby matches. (not sure how that arrangement is made, maybe Wellington rugby subsidizes it?)

I tried to book a car park for Saturday's game and they were all sold out
