yeah I am certainly not blaming LBS for thisFriar Tuck

Wouldnt surprise me if the club is unwilling to invest a lot in LBS's development (i.e. give him lots of minutes) if right now he is unwilling to sign a contract extension with his contract running out at the end of next season.
I said before this season that the club needed him to have breakout season this season so they could sell him in this coming offseason, because LBS would probably be advised to not sign an extension so he could go for free* at the end of next season.
He hasn't had a breakout season. Now, the club may be using the only leverage it has: either sign a contract now or we will give you very limited minutes over tne next 18 months which will stall your development
*even if we get no transfer fee we might get some sort of FIFA mandated development fee from a club that picked him up for free
He’s only played 280 minutes with no starts, he hasn’t even had the chance to break out

Agreed. But I also think that some of what the player Kosta is today is also owed to the technical and tactical expertise of Postecoglou. Kosta is a talent, but not all talents come through, talent alone is not enough. The timing of his tenure at Roar was a blessing for Kosta's development.
Krishna too struggled for game time early on. I guess obvious talent isn't obvious to everyone. GSR preferred? Najjarine? Ok...Ninja

The LBS situation kind reminds of me a little of the Kosta early days. Showed some great promise even getting a MOTM but never for what ever reason being able to demand a regular spot. Then moves on and for seasons torments us as he shows what he can do. What is it part of 4 title winning teams.
I love this kind of story - in sport, life. The guy who was overlooked, given a chance elsewhere, and completely dominates and proves everyone wrong.

yeah, we should've benched the likes of Bertos, Daniel, Smeltz, Ifill, Greenacre etc.
It particularly sucked for Kosta as we didn't have a NYL team in Aus or reserves here in NZ. We did loan him to Macarthur to get minutes during an off-season.
Its a shame the change in structure in NZ Football, changing from NZFC to the National League has meant less games and not running concurrently with the AL. Missing out on the OFC league is also an issue here. But he is still 17, many players that have done well in the league competing for young player of the year have been 5, 6, 7 years older than LBS is now.
To be honest Daniel already spent a lot of time coming from the bench and really was Bertos showing he was that much better. Just said it reminded me of Kosta if you remember he had a break out game at the end of one season and then was hardly used the next then made the move. Just find it very strange LBS did some good stuff against Brisbane and just when you think his confidence would be high he dosnt get hardly any chance. Dont buy the 17 years old BS other teams have shown their young guys can step up when given a decent chance
Head coach Giancarlo Italiano says having more players available for selection opens up options for his Wellington Phoenix side as they face Western Sydney Wanderers in Friday’s men’s A-League match.
“We have a really healthy competition for spots,” Italiano says.
“I’m able to strategise now, a couple of different options and change things in-game tactically, which is something I feel is one of mine and the coaching staff’s strong points.”
Forward Nikola Mileusnic is back from injury, captain Alex Rufer has recovered from a minor injury that sidelined him a week ago, and the club has newly-signed midfielder Sarpreet Singh available.
“Now we have players like Nikola coming back from injury and even the younger boys have now had a lot of gametime and understand their roles a lot clearer,” Italiano said.
“The overall trend has been with a deeper squad that we’re able to influence the games late.
“It’s progressing nicely. Now we just need to convert that into results.”

Mainland said that Ange made Kosta as an attacker. Finishing school. It could also be argued that Merrick played a role in preparing Krishna. He was able to keep him out of the squad and work with him to get him ready. With Krishna the talent was clear, but whether he could make the jump from NZFC bully to A league forward. And when he came back…the rest is history!
Blame the coaches and the set ups. 😄
LBS is more in a Surman situation than Kosta. He’s proved he can do a job. But he’s not a senior player or even an 80-90 minute player yet. There’s pros and cons to his current output. Though to my way of thinking mostly pros.

Chief has about 10 weeks to earn himself a spot in the finals, and potentially a job for next year. I expect he'll focus over that period on winning football matches rather than developing youth. Reminds me of Talay's last season and his refusal to play young players as we pushed for finals.
LBS has shown plenty of promise, but you can't tell me he deserves a spot over any of Eze, Piper, Mileusnic, Najjarine, Singh and Sander on current ability alone.
He's still wasteful in possession and I thought MV really exploited his tendency of taking a large touch towards his own goal to create space, and they took the ball from him 2 or 3 times attempting that. He didn't track his man who scored the winning goal either, just switched off.
He's got a future, but those kinds of errors make him hard to select in a must win game.

100x This.
Hugely promising talent, but still sooo much to work on with him game, and now it's all about winning football matches not player development.
Whether it's with the Nix or earlier with the NZU20s at their Chile WC, LBS hasn't made the improvements we had hoped he would. If he ends up leaving on a free the end of next season, that would yes be unfortunate, but development speed plus contract lengths of young players is no perfect science. A large dollop of luck is involved.

Meanwhile our other 17 year old is playing regularly and scored the most goals for us this season and got herself a hat trick!

I do not have enough expertise to compare individual skills of LBS vs GSR (who is in the team list) but either way most if not all players on the sheet should be able to play the full 90 if needed, maybe except Singh just this time, GSR any time due to the age, and Piper to avoid an injury flareup. But with LBS we simply know he cannot play full 90, so it might have been a toss-up between him and GSR, and this time Italiano is going with GSR. May not mean much more than Chiefy spreading the minutes between these two youngsters.

womens game is a very very different kettle of fish. both in average of squads, and in skill levels. at 17 LBS is 7 years younger than the aveage across the league (24.7 yrs), compared to the women's average age of 22.4yrs. The womens league is heavily weighted to giving mionutes yo young players (under 21) - so a 17 year old isnt going to be coming up against an expereinced 28-30 year old that often.
Whoever gets onto the pitch tonite i just want see some intent from the players and NONE of the pissing around we have had to put up with recently. Its all right the coach and the players feeding us fans the same old BS ENOUGH is ENOUGH just show us you have the same passion the fans show week in week out despite some of your pathetic recent performances.
All I want to see is Singh receiving the ball in the pocket, jinking past a defender, and sticking it in the top corner. And three points. Is that too much to ask?

And Rufer avoiding a yellow card which would see him suspended next week - Other than that, perfect. 👌

Watch him absolutely flog someone inside the opening 10 minutes. 😭
If it makes you feel any better though, Cosgrove and Verstraete are walking the same yellow card tightrope in Sydney. But we'll deal with that later.
would like to see this. Payne really impressed me at times last season when he played CB. Didnt expect it after he was a pretty average CB back when Elliot was our RB. Payne hasnt been great at RB recently so definitely worth a go. kwlap
Only this is Sheridan is very inconsistent with his delivery and his late runs into the box so we lose a bit on attack. But we should be more solid at the back.
I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.
Pretty sure isn't Eze also one yellow away? I'm sure he is on 4YoungHeartHM

nah, I reckon a lopsided 4231 or 343. If Sheridan is lb he won't be that attacking whereas Payne at rb can bomb forward with Singh or Sander cutting in, Armiento a proper winger. A 343 would be basically a straight swap Sheridan for James, Sander and Singh the two 10s in possession.

There is no way we will see Sheridan at CB so it would be Payne, I think. Sheridan is hopeless on the left but is a serviceable at RWB. With Payne, Hughes and Tuiloma as 3 CBs there is less worry of Armiento and Sheridan having to track back as much as if we played 2 CBs. Good to see Rufer back to enforce some order in the middle.
