Dare I say it, but Paine seems to be struggling, has been for a while now, far from the Mr Dependable that he was for consecutive seasons, not just him obviously, but how about less throwing up of his arms, and taking more accountability would be a good start.
Either way, our defense looks very fragile, which is fine if we have a potent attack, but even they dont seem to be clicking. Early days of course, but after two home games and some seemingly great signings, I expected more.

I'm so happy that Pennington came on when he did but he should have come on as soon as we scored. That was the point when we needed his DM talents.

Hr did the job he was asked to do, he was tidy in the midfield and that corner was brilliant,
You're clearly a guy who has followed football for years and has a lot of knowledge but I think that you're still missing what he brings to the DM role.
  • His stats show, he wins the ball more than Ruf and Lewis combined. He also makes, probably, too many mistakes. But when we're winning, we're not exposed to his mistakes. We just benefit from his defending.

  • Why did we get 18 points from his 10 competitive games as sole midfielder??? league winning form, his first 10 as well.

he got 18 points? he has 10 other players to work with too it's not just him. oyu're right, he's good when we are winning, but you cant be that guy who plays well when youre ahead all the time. He needs to be the guy that can be good all the time. Comparisons ro Rufer do him no favours in my eyes, I dont think Rufer should ever set foot on a football field (but I'm very anti Rufer).

to be fair to myself I was very open about my bias and adjusted the persepctive before he injured himself. If the Lewis and Ugarkovic contionues to looks as good as it did yesterday, Rufer is gonna have to work very hard to get back into consideration.

Yes agreed but given he was a genuine starter before the injury maybe in Talays eyes he wont have that much to prove. Whatever it has to be good when he comes back to have another option to throw in the mix.

Sometimes the players recover from a season long injury but do not slot back in well because of how the team has progressed since, not how well they themselves have recovered.
For example, if Ball recovers from his foot problem, and remains fit, he can do well on the right hand side of the midfield where we have not seen that much brilliance lately.
This may not be the case with Rufer if Lewis, Ugarkovic and Pennington develop a good understanding where any of them can be a pair of DMs on the field.  It does not mean that Rufer will be surplus to requirements; it simply means he may not be automatically the first or even second choice., once he is fit for action again.

Rufer is the best of the four midfield contenders defensively. I don't see him as contributing enough offensively and in controlling possession to start but might be a good one to bring on when Lewis/Ugarkovic/Pennington are tired and we're looking to shore up for a result. Laws can also do this role.

What is that cannabis leaf-like symbol on our shirts below OPPO?

Finally, Te Raukura (the white feather or a plume of white feathers) is centred on the front of the jerseys. It is an important symbol to the tribes who affiliate to Te Āti Awa and other Taranaki rohe. Te Raukura represents spiritual, physical, and communal harmony and unity. It is an acknowledgement of a higher spiritual power and is a symbol of faith, hope, and compassion for all.

I could not believe also the difference Sutton made when he came on.  The threat level down our left went up considerably.  Looked like Liberato was back
Mauragis won't be able to play vs the Jets next weekend, so guessing he got the nod to ensure Sutton is fully fit for that match.

I thought Mauragis showed more attacking intent this week and was overall solid defensively but just like Elliot the previous weekend, his replacement showed him up a bit.

Having been at the ground, I saw something on watching a replay this morning that might make me sound like an old stick in the mud.  Didnt notice it at the time.

I am not a fan, in fact I hate it, of a trend that has developed recently on tv in Europe especially the EPL, of players waggling one finger from side to side at a linesman when they are flagged for offside.  To me it is open dissent and needs jumping on.

I noticed on TV Waine doing it when he had his first goal ruled out for offside, quite clearly correctly.  I know he is only doing it because he has seen it on tv, but is not necessary.

Players on loan don't tend to pay against their parent clubs. I don't know about the a-league but it's frowned upon in Europe because the player is compromised.

Zawada's got a ton of energy. Surprisingly quick too.
I've liked what I've seen from Zawada so far. He uses his size and strength well + made some intelligent runs off the ball. Both him and Waine feel quite similar in style but they are not getting in each other's way, so I think they are going to be a good combo. Maybe when Ball is fit again, his creativity might get him the nod over Zawada tho.

I reckon Ball is gonna end up being played as one of the wider #10's. so you might find the likes of Sasse and Kraev are gonna be under pressure. Possibly even Kosta if he doesn't light things up in the ext game or two?

Ball being played as a wide #10 is highly likely, I just feel he looked more dangerous when played up front during his first season. Gonna be a lot of competition for places, which is good to see.

I wonder if we have any tactical flexibility built in to use this sudden over abundance of potential starters (3-4 positions where there’s a coin toss imo) to gain advantages in some games?
But more often than not 3+3 doesn’t equal six, but more unfamiliar combinations or less time on/space with the ball for form  players.

For example would Kosta up front have been better than Zawada? Waine is the current undroppable, but Kosta/Waine was good in the cup. As you say Bally has been great up front- a contender for player of the season last year imo.

It also seems that if we play Zawada/Waine we’re going to play a lot more aerial long balls in behind, whereas the last couple of goals with Kosta’s involvement came playing through the lines.

To put it another way- so far out forward line has a B pass mark. Not sure about the midfield/FB creators and the defense yet. We’re not holding and dominating possession with the swift passing game Uffie has played in the past. We seem with Ugarkovic to be dribbling a bit more out of midfield. But also both teams have had success pressing against us more than last season.

Hurt my heart a little to see Jaushy involved in a late breakaway winner with the Jets. I reckon he’s a snake for not re-signing…

Compromised? What does that mean?
It's not Europe - in Italy loan players play against their parent club and I'm pretty sure it's the same in Spain and Germany.
It's in England where they are forbidden because it is part of the contract the 2 two clubs sign. It's an iniquitous behaviour and should be stopped.
It's got nothing to do with any "compromising"; whatever that means.

Ah yes, I am so glad we grabbed a point thanks to an Ayongo own goal from Jason Pennington's corner. Silly mistake by Newshub sports journalist Stephen Foote.

I don't know if Kosta up front would have resulted in a different game plan for this last game. I think there was a bit of a reaction to the ADL game where we started that game looking to play through the lines but ADL being very good at shutting passing lanes and having pressing triggers for when the ball went to our FBs - we shifted more direct in that game once a man down to bypass that situation. This game it was clear seeing CCM FBs track our AM into the central areas (Roux fouled Kraev in a deep central area for instance) and it was clear that direct balls into the channels are an option for our defence/CM and that our forwards look to exploit that space so we didn't have to try and play through a heavily congested midfield. So I think Kosta would have been ok with this tactic.

Ball or Zawada are sort of trying to do the same thing - link play between midfield and attack - but in a different manner. Ball drops deep and looks to turn. Zawada doesn't drop as deep but plays with back to goal.

I think its good we do this as we need to be making teams make difficult decisions - who picks up our AMs? Do the opposition want to have at least parity if not a man extra in central midfield areas? Looking at our shape I could see us having problems against a 343.

Our loan player last year played against his parent club in the cup. Did not work out well for us if I recall.
Vague recollection he was at fault for a goal.

I know I’m preaching to the converted, but sharke music clips and interventions do not equate to a family atmosphere. Rugby has to do it because there’s fudge all atmosphere. Was ridiculous, it was even during play. Fudge. That.

I don't really mind them trying to get the crowd engaged in other way. I'm not really a fan of it, but I'm just 1 of 7-8K people there. I'm (we the Fever) are no more important than anyone else there. I don't think it worked for substitutions because the game restarts quite quickly.  Think it suits injury breaks better when a physio goes onto the field and the delay is longer.

I agree, although often the crowd are actually interestied in what's happening on the field during injury breaks - especially if they are serious, so starting a "eeeeeeeyo" chant using the big screen might be a little inapproproate. Football isnt the same as rugby with big breaks for lineouts or scrums and the crowd is generally more actively noisy than a rugby match so there is no need for additional music from the announcer. I'd prefer it if they focussed on getting their basic role right before trying to drum up noise ie getting the players names correct.
The timeing was weird too as he continued the queen clips into the 80'th minute which is generally when the Fever fire up. This ground announcer celarly needs to work on his game a little bit, timing is everything. If he is trying to drum up noise then he shouldn't be using his speakers and video screen to drown out the usual noise the fans are making. I note that the fever fired up when he did it a second time.
