Was noticing in chiefs press conference tonight, he was refraining from saying his usual “Try to get the 3 points” and instead was saying “We’ll do as well as we can” against the central coast mariners.
Defenitely gonna be a full defensive minded game from us

Alex Ruger is a great player and I'd say we won't beat ccm/be lucky to draw without him. But he is a cynical player and to say he did everything to avoid stomping on Henry Hore is a stretch. I'd be interested to see if Hore has done something to piss off Rufer earlier in the game or maybe Rufer was just pissed off he was playing the ball between his legs. Definitely going for that ball was never going to end well.

Cynical is never the way id describe rufer. He was just playing the ball and it got into a weird position.

Agreed.  Tough - yes. Determined - yes. Cynical - no.

‘Cynical’??

What the heck does that mean?

You cannot be serious! Hard, determined, tough tackler - yes. Cynical no. If you want to know what cynical means in football terms watch YouTube footage from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s. I recommend the Leeds/ Chelsea fa cup replay of whenever it was - 1970 or thereabouts - the England/Argentina quarter final in ‘66. And many others.

If you want a recent example watch the Sydney FC goalkeeper yesterday taking a swipe at her opponent. That is closer to what I’d call cynical.

And ‘stomp’?

To stomp surely implies that there is vertical upward before downward movement of the foot. Of which there was none. Where the heck was he supposed to place his foot? Or maybe in a fraction of a fraction of a second, think ‘oh I’d better angle my foot so the studs are not showing . . . ‘er well, maybe not ‘cos then I’d twist my ankle’. He had to put his bloody foot somewhere and exert some downward pressure to move.

yellow card, not red.

It was a bit embarrassing yesterday how the sky sport commentary content was so phoenix favoured bordering on bias. That's one really good thing about Piney he is very measured and fair to both teams with his comments.
We can't really complain about Aussies like Slater and Harper if that's what we are going to deal up.

For a definition of a "cynical player" it is enough to look up on YouTube a highlights reel of Kevin Muscat from his playing days in UK.
"Tough"?  - check. "Determined"? - check. "Cynical" - ? often.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

There was a fear the centre back’s head might split open again, after an incident while on international duty with the All Whites at the beginning of the week left him needing six stitches.

Surman was ruled out of New Zealand’s second match against Tunisia after copping an accidental boot to the head from club captain Alex Rufer during a training session in Cairo.

He returned from Egypt looking like a mummy with his head heavily bandaged and was deemed “touch and go” for Sunday’s match for the Phoenix at Sky Stadium.

“The ball popped up and I went quite low with my head and he flicked the ball over my head and got me briefly on the follow through and just cut it open,” Surman explained.

“It was a complete accident.”

Joey Lynch reporting that Rufer is banned for only one game. Almost makes you think it’s the minimal amount they can give for a crap decision without admitting any blame on behalf of the officials…

reduction is all the review panel could do after a red card has been issued, the 1 match ban is essnetially an admission that the refs got it wrong on the day and it should have remained a yellow.

No offense intended…but Sky, if Jason Pine is an unavailable, use Daniel Mchardy instead.  If AKL FC had any sense, they would pinch him next season to call their games.  His mt smart call earlier this season was a revelation…

I doubt the club get any say in who commentates on the games. That has to be down to the company who is bradcasting it. If Sky is smart they'll get hoe based football pundits to be the commentary team.

Al-Talay and Pennington off? Early doors. Hmm. Not much midfield cover there now.

Man what a game, very fun in attendance. Paulson is a beast man dude really deserves a chant lmao (don't ask me for ideas I'm not creative). thought Kosta was on side but at least we won regardless

btw just wondering as a new fan, how come the yellow fever stands so far back instead of right up to the pitch?
Welcome to the forum!

P.S. *Paulsen - advantage has been paid.

Another clean sheet - what is the record for most in a season in the A League out of curiosity.

Great defense this year - which after the last couple is amazing!!

Vuka had 16 in 28 games for Sydney in 16/17.

Paulsen has 9, so impossible to beat that. Second highest is 13 (Reddy in 29 games for the Glory in 18/19)

We would probably hear that "ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which he would not put"
