Devasting for her. The plague of female ACL injuries has another victim.

At least there will be plenty of people around the ALW side, who can tell her what's required to rehab and recover.

There are a shocking number of ACL injuries for female players. Maybe there are some types of repetitive training activities that should be limited. I'm sure, well hoping, researchers are looking at it.

Wow, so much more to come from this space, with all the research finally being put in on the best way to train female athletes.

See that midfielder Rebecca Burrows who played a bit for Newcastle Jets last ALW season, and then had a stint in China, is back in NZ. Played for Springs in the Kate Sheppard final. Might be worth a look at for the Nix.

Grace Jale's ex, yeah that might be a bit awks? But I'll leave it to Doloras for a definitive answer on how awkward that would be.

She didn't do much while at Jets, wouldn't want her if that's going to cause friction in the squad

Also if we're gonna be signing fringe ALW players - young Kiwis under 23-25 ideal

Maybe that's why Temple got in trouble last year... tried to stop all the inhouse sheboinking as its an unwanted complication and distraction.

A lot of the above is in Women's Cricket as well and is a 'known problem' with allegations of grooming by older players when rooming with younger players on tour etc.

If he was that against it I doubt he would have gone and signed an existing player's partner like he just did with Jale.

Firstly, allegations of "grooming" were always motivated by bigotry more than anything else, and are in the current situation politically explosive and could end up putting their targets under personal threat, so cut that crap out.

Secondly, I've never personally fished in the pond I swim in, but I have been assured by former Football Ferns (some of whom did play with their ex's) that everyone's a grown-up about such things.

Thirdly, Jale's current partner (according to this forum) is Mackenzie Barry, so that *would* set up an interesting dynamic.

Fourthly, the word "sheboinking" is kind of funny and kind of gross, so I'm going to suggest not using it unless you are a sheboinker.

This is very speculative and a wee bit offensive to be honest with nothing to go off.

More likely is that he was trying to raise the competitive and professional standards (which the previous coaches failed to instill let's be clear) and certain players didn't like the change in team environment.

For what it's worth too - the two players he had issues with are both in heterosexual relationships.

As far as the NZ Cricket thing... the word 'grooming' is the word shared with me, by people involved in the environment. Wasn't trying to be offensive, just drawing a comparison to a sport with similar relationship dynamics. Apologies.

Personally I don't care who sleeps with who, you do you is my political lens. But if players are in relationships, and on the same team I can certainly understand how this could complicate a coaches/managers role.

Let's be very clear. It doesn't matter what kind of environment is, or whether it's straight, queer, or whatever. You get a bunch of young healthy people with nice bodies together, you're going to get boinking and there ain't nothing you can do about that, the best you can do is encourage responsibility.

Lisa De Vana made allegations of grooming, bullying etc in the Matildas. Referring to when she came into the team as a young kid, and some senior players targeted her. Another player with similar claims.

It would be naive to suggest it hasn't happened in the past. De Vana would have debuted for the Matildas more than 20 years ago. A different time when women's football was more amateur, with a lot less media focus, resources etc. Now I'm sure all players in pro setups get lessons on what's acceptable behaviour and what's not. And they know they are far more in the public eye.

But the greater issue in the women's game seems to have been predatory behaviour by men, especially those in powerful positions like coaches, managers etc. Note the scandal with NWSL in the US, the Spanish FA president unsolicited kiss of Jenni Hermoso etc etc.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/oct/06/lisa-de-vanna-football-australia-to-investigate-matildas-allegations-sexual-harassment-indecent-assault-grooming-bullying

Anyway for various reasons, yes Rebecca Burrows an unlikely pickup for the Nix.

So along with Foster, Mariana Speckmaier, Hope Breslin, Isabel Cox, Macey Fraser and Kate Taylor have gone. This is the team at the moment:

Wellington Phoenix A-League Women squad

Goalkeepers: Aimee Danieli, Carolina Vilão

Defenders: Mackenzie Barry, Tiana Jaber, Rebecca Lake, Zoe McMeeken, Ella McMillan

Midfielders: Daisy Brazendale, Manaia Elliott, Olivia Ingham, Ela Jerez, Alyssa Whinham

Forwards: Olivia Fergusson, Grace Jale, Emma Main, Ella McCann.

Rylee Foster, Bri Edwards & Hailey Davidson also all gone from last season. .
Ella McCann sadly did her ACL in Colombia with the U20s, out before the season starts.

Perhps Temple plans to watch first few weeks of the National League before finalising his squad. Plus maybe some other visa players he's chatting to.

What's Helena Errington up to?  Fingers crossed Longo makes herself available.

Yep there's certainly a few good options there - the gap at women's level between National League and A-League is not that big.

Ella Jerez to take set pieces - can knock them in with both feet. Expect her to play big minutes by the seasons end, if not from the start.

Would be handy to bring in some of the better domestic players to the Nix, before the AFC ALW team starts up in 12 months. Though the de riguer 1 season women's contracts make that tricky, re contracting anyone beyond this season.

Like you can definitely imagine a Ella Jerez is yes a target for Auckland when they start up their side.

We need a Ferns quality mid or an import mid. Otherwise happy with that base for the squad. Especially as quite a bit of continuity throughout the squad with players familiar with the coaching and they are another year older so should level up. Eg McMeeken should be targeting more game time this season and also looking to the future. I don’t expect Barry or Foster to still be playing ALW next season and the only thing stopping it was Barry was on a 2 year contract so she couldn’t leave after playing in the WWC. She’s definitely good enough to play above ALW

Of these maybe only Errington & Satchell are Bix ALW options. Yes Satchell is limited apart from that speed, but brings experience and McCann is now gone for the season. Deven Jackson I don't know much about.

Interersting that regular Fern Jacqui Hand was released by her English Championship club, when Hannah Blake is signed into the same league by Durham and scores on debut. Seems Daisey Cleverley is retiring.

And the nix listen to you and signed an import mid.

"American midfielder Maya McCutcheon is joining the Phoenix for the 2024-25 Ninja A-League from National Women’s Soccer League side North Carolina Courage.

McCutcheon, 23, signed her first pro contract with the Courage this year after a decorated college career at Oklahoma and then West Virginia, where she won the Big 12 Championship in 2022.

At high school she led FC Dallas to an Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) championship, as well as numerous conference titles."

This sounds like it could be a really great signing, I mean we'll have to wait and see how she plays but everything they're saying about her sounds great.

I like that it sounds like she is quite a physical player, hopefully shades of Isabel Cox in that way.

Feeling quietly hyped about this signing

Sometimes this reporting annoys me... it seems every one of our visa signings male or female gets the branding of "they knew so-and-so who convinced them to come"

Like footballers are only making career decisions off what their mates or colleagues say!

I am quite happy to hear of the players doing their due diligence too. There are plenty of football clubs around the world that would be poor choices to go to. Players could rely on just their agents word for it, but some agents might not be all that reliable either.

Fingers crossed she stays injury free.
