Walker was a NZ player last season. Unless things have changed, I guess doesn't have Aus citizenship. Which is not that easy to get even if you have lived in Aus longer than NZ. (just ask Quade Cooper).
But I agree with you. Thought she was good value last year.
Be interesting to see how she goes with the U20's at the WC. Good chance she will partner Taylor as a CB.
Also how all the other non-contracted Nix players from last year go. Ava Pritchard, Charlotte Lancaster, Grace Wisnewski, Zoe McMeeken, and of course Marisa van der Meer and Macey Fraser as well.

Good to see Australians deciding to move over to NZ. Obviously it's different from the men, these women have to leave school, quit jobs, and move their entire lives.

Men don’t have lives?

No what he means is that the women are contracted for 24 weeks so it’s a part time gig compared to the men as full time.
They aren’t paid for the other 28 weeks

Men do have lives, but there lives at the Nix are full time pro football. The girls are not full time and also get paid alot less. A lot having part time jobs to support themselves. The ALW season is also shorter and contracts are not full year, so the women need a full time job between seasons.. Alot of the Aussie girls we had last year were 19 or 20 years old. Some just out of school, some studying at Uni.
This all makes it more difficult to uproot and move to a totally different country like NZ.

Perhaps mens and womens are under the same umbrella, but when Iceland men were doing so well recently (in the Euros I think) I saw an article about the coaching set up in Iceland. Looked impressive. Here is a random link I just googled. https://trainingground.guru/articles/reasons-for-the-eruption-of-icelandic-football

Good signing, provides leadership too which is needed with our young team.

I wonder what the quality of the Iceland league is compared to the A-League Women. Considering the population of Iceland is less than the Wellington urban area, I can't imagine the quality is high.

With U20 WWC over for our girls. You would have to assume a number of these girls will get offered contracts with the Nix ALW team. (Although its a bit unknown who else has been training with Gemma Lewis's A League Off Season Program).
Jensen, Collins, Sheaff, and Dugan were all starters that play in US College system so won't be considered. And I assume Clegg and Nathan are still at school so won't be considered.

Must picks for me are. Wisnewski and Van der Meer. After that Lancaster and McMeeken.
That would cover full backs and midfield. With Lancaster able to play FB and wing.
That would leave 2 spots for NZers. (including the scholarship positions) that I assume Lancaster and McMeeken could fill. Although I'm not sure if you can go from contract to scholarship in McMeekens case.
Would love to see Clegg in the environment as a scholarship player, but at only 16 she probably has 1 year of school left. No doubt her time will come. Next season there should be less restrictions on this team.
Was a shame we didn't get to see Macey Fraser at this tournament.

Question marks.
Are there other Fern's players that need game time / contracts in the lead up to 2023 WWC. Bowen and White come to mind. Longo also.
Are there any other players on the radars for Aus based clubs. I assume Wilkinson and Steinmetz will return to there respective clubs from last season. Will there be more NZ players that join teams in Aus. Can see Walker getting picked up. She has good utility value.

Still 3 months till season start.

There's also Kelli Brown to consider. Struggled with injury last year so didn't really get to prove herself. Whereas Pritchard does seem to be a Lewis favourite, has had plenty of opportunities, but like you say has not been particularly effective. For me. Pritchard still young so will get more opportunities in the future if she can up her game contribution.

Gone a bit quiet on transfer news for these girls... I would have thought a few deals would have been thrashed out after the U20WWC.

Tell you what is even slacker though - season schedule is not even out yet.

Grace Wisenewski re-signs

However Talitha Kramer has signed with the Roar

Hope she's doing okay, pretty upsetting to hear she was considering giving up football at such a young age. Was great to see her at the U20 World Cup and hopefully she can become a regular starter again this season.

With Marisa van der Meer being announced the squad is starting to take shape quite nicely. Here is the starting 11 based on who's signed so far.

Alfeld
McMeeken Barry Taylor Van der Meer
Gomez Wisnewski
Whinham Hassett
Knott Satchell

Be interesting to see if they stick with a 4-3-3 system or change system to get more out of the players . Based on those 11 names it quite suits the 4-2-2-2 system like what Uffie plays with the men .

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/women-in-sport/130031972/michaela-robertson-first-wellingtonian-to-sign-for-phoenix-womens-team

Although she is from Wellington and considers herself a “fully fledged Kiwi”, Robertson qualifies for one of the five permitted Australian spots on the Phoenix roster as her mum was born across the Tasman.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix have made two notable appointments to their backroom staff with Callum Holmes coming on board as an assistant coach and Maia Vink joining as the team’s analyst.

Both Holmes and Vink previously worked with Lawrence at Capital Football.

How many players to go now?

We had a squad of 18 senior players + 2 scholarship players last season. We currently are at 15, so at least 3 seniors players.

Lol *senior* - also I'm hoping Emma Main gets a look-in! she has been one of the best in New Zealand for the last few years

Can anyone tell me who the Nix women's player is on the October page of the 2022 Calendar (that was sent out with last season's membership packs) ?

Good to see another Aussie signed. Looks like she has performed well at NPL level. Even though she has just turned 18. Can cover CB and RB.
A proven goal scorer would be a nice addition. I realise that's easier said than done though. 2 spots to go.
There was rumour of another off shore Ferns player interested a while back. Wonder where that is at.

Not sure. But Gemma Lewis specifically said they could potentially sign two off shore Ferns when she mentioned it. Longo is not that being based in NZ. It was a while ago now though. Just before they announced Betsy Hasett.

When Domey was on the Fever FM podcast he said they are spending the full salary cap on the women's team this year. Looking at the roster and comparing to other teams with imports and squads of 20 odd.
Hard to see where that money is going if we are only going to have a squad of 18 like last year and signing 18 years old NPL players. Unless there are some big signings still to be announced. Which I somehow doubt.

From an Aussie in the know (Eric Subijano, commentates NPL and writes for Beyond 90):

"Cicco has been (in my opinion) one of the best NPL NSW defenders over the last two seasons
APIA normally use her as a centre back but she can also play right back, and given the Macca Bazza - Kate Taylor duo, we are more likely to see her at right back for Phoenix
Claudia is good on the ball and only a few years ago she played as a forward, when she was coming up the ranks at Football NSW Institute
I think Wellington have mugged off the Aussie clubs here (especially the ones from New South Wales)"

NPL NSW put out some best pics from there season just finished.
Pretty sure this is new signing Cicco up against Matilda - Vine

And Izzy Gomez doing Izzy stuff in midfield.
