Esson is the next big one off I'd like to see re-signed. May depend on the Middag situation and if she makes a comeback, moves permenatlely into a staffing role, or wants to go back to home.

A really good review of the teams season from The Niche Cache https://theniche-cache.com/football/2026/6/1/the-wellington-phoenixs-2025-26-a-league-season-in-review

At the end, looking at our team for next season:

Have a look at the squad situation as the offseason baton is passed from 2025-26 to 2026-27...

Contracted For Next Season:
Brooke Nunn, CJ Bott, Makala Woods, Sabitra Bhandari, Grace Jale, Ellie Walker, Emma Main, Tiana Jaber, Mackenzie Barry, Marisa van der Meer, Macey Fraser, Pia Vlok

Off-Contract:
Vic Esson, Manaia Elliott, Lucia Leon, Tessel Middag, Emma Pijnenburg, Zoe Benson, Mikaela Bangalan, Mackenzie Anthony, Lara Wall, Daisy Brazendale, Alyssa Whinham, Aimee Danieli, Brooke Neary, Ela Jerez, Ella McMillan, Ella McCann

Ellie Walker played every single minute. Mackenzie Barry and Marisa van der Meer joined her in starting all 22 games. Other players to surpass 1500 minutes this season were: Vic Esson, Grace Jale, Brooke Nunn, Manaia Elliott, and Pia Vlok. If they’d been there from the start then Makala Woods and Emma Pijnenburg might have joined them. Priestman wasn’t one for much rotation, preferring to pick her best team every week and back them to recover for the next task - hence those players listed make up 10/11 of that best eleven. Of those ten, seven of them are under contract to return with Nunn, Barry, Walker, Woods, and Jale having signed one-year extensions (matching the time remaining on Priestman’s own contract) before the season was even finished in a clear vote of confidence in the team’s direction.

On top of that, Emma Main, CJ Bott, and Sabitra Bhandari were all injured/unavailable for the finals run and would immediately add something to any matchday squad. Macey Fraser missed most of the season for personal reasons but was pretty much reintegrated by the end of it, winning enough favour from her coach to appear in six of the last seven matches off the bench.

You’d have to think they can pretty much take their pick of those uncontracted players. Bangalan and Neary will settle back into Reserve team footy over the winter as they (and many of their teammates) prepare for September’s U20 World Cup. A few others like Jerez and McMillan never seemed to be in Priestman’s plans for whatever reason so they may opt to try something else. Grace Bartlett has already taken that option by joining Auckland United. Lily Brazendale, Harriet Muller, and Zoe Benson were all on youth contracts but all are still young enough to stick around with the Reserves as well.

Elliott and Pijnenburg could draw attention from foreign clubs if the Nix aren’t quick about it, though they have an import spot spare to replace either of them if need be. Vic Esson and Tessel Middag seem pretty committed to the organisation (Middag’s even been popping up on the coaching staff for the academy teams) although in Middag’s case there’s her import status to think about. It’s also the case that there’s one midfield starter position available alongside Grace Jale which means there may not be room to keep Middag, Bott, and Pijnenburg all happy. Could always just move Bott to wing-back as a solution. As for Esson, she shouldn’t take much convincing to return. Continuity between the seasons is never a given for any Wellington Phoenix team but then there’s never been a Wellington Phoenix team like this one before.

I'm an optimistic pessimist.
I'm positive things will go wrong.

Vic Esson's re-signing is great news - I was really hoping we would get her back for next season. The amount of continuity we have in the squad is pretty exciting

You'd think Wynham, Elliot, Pijnenburg would be woth signing on again. Wall and Brazendale also worth keeping.
But the Phoenix set up might appeal to some with a Womens World cup in 2027.

Other Out of contract Kiwi Free agents.
Katie Bowen has left Inter Milan.
Indi Page Riley has left Crystal Palace.
Kate Taylor's Dijon sound like they are not going to have a women's team next year.
Also sounds like Durham are about to shut down there women's program. So Mikaela Foster and Hannah Blake will be looking for new contracts somewhere.
Not sure of the staus of other A legaue kiwi's. Zoe McMeekan, Liz Anton, Devan Jackson, Kelli Brown, Charlotte Lancaster, Olivia Page, Anna Leat.
Also to name a few Maggie Jenkins, Ava Collins, Kiara Bercelli, Ruby Nathan, Erin Naylor are free agents playing in the NPL Aus comp.
So plenty of talent out there.

I had just assumed Erin Nayler had retired! Now 34.
But yeah see she has popped up in the NSW NPL with UNSW FC. Same NPL club as Ava Collins.

The Nix won't sign Nayler, but another ALW club might look at her if they want an older experienced keeper.
She was on the whole very average for the Ferns though.

Shame that Anna Leat's career is not really going anywhere.

Hannah Wilkinson also playing in the NPL in Aus. Some of these older players may not have Pro ambitions anymore but still enjoying there football.
Yes real shame about Anna Leat. Not sure the Nix need another GK though. Brooke Neary looks like a really good prospect to keep on.

Wonder what Esson staying means for Middag. Medical retirement and continuing her coaching involvement? Or a recovery and return to a visa spot next year in a central midfield that arguably doesn't need an import?

A fit Middag is a top quality visa player. But we only have one visa spot left. Depending on what happens with Samba's recovery.
Samba won't be fit till mid season at best so visa contrcts will be a bit of a juggle one way or the other.

Izzy was managed terribly by Temple and the club I’d imagine it would’ve been her last choice if she’d stayed around

I don't think Temple managed Izzy, Gemma Lewis in the first season and Natalie Lawrence in the 2nd. Izzy play all games under Lewis, but only came off the bench 5 times under Lawrence. Lawrence prioritising Kiwis Wisnewski, Hassett and Knot.

Bott returning makes this less of a loss though, she probably saw a reduced role incoming.

Did she not leave before Temple was appointed?

Left in March 2023 and Temple was appointed in May for 2023/24.

I don't remember the contract situations of Winham and Fraser, but Winham will hopefully be back and Fraser was coming back towards the end of the season. There's also Middag who could be re-signed.

Real shame we never really got to see Middag. And I feel Leon was played mostly out of her natural position so maybe didn't quite have the impact she would have liked. Can also understand the scholarship players wanting to move on, as have the feeling competition for places next season will be high.
Wish them all the best.

Ella McMillan made four substitute appearances for the first team across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns.

She has joined Waterside Karori for the women’s Central League season but
will continue to work as a physical performance scientist at the Nix academy.

“Thanks to the Phoenix for the last three years,” McMillan said. “Wishing all the players and staff the best for next season.”

Nice. Got to support our players in pro football careers when their opportunities fade. Can be set up for careers beyond playing, that way.

Once you been a professional player you can’t go to a US college unfortunately

Thought she was only on a Scholarship? If she didn't take payment like Milly Clegg did, she would be fine.

NCAA eligibility is a bit of a cluster fudge atm, former pro Basketball players have been allowed to play.

No, just Central League:
"has joined Wellington United in the women’s Central League."
I saw her play for NZ in the 2024 FIFA u-17 Women's World Cup on FIFA+ and thought she was underwhelming.
